I resisted building Darien for a long time. He was one of those good cards, out of my typical price range, that players without inventiveness played.

On closer inspection Darien does something that I enjoy in my EDH decks. He turns expectations around. Where white decks typically try to protect themselves at all costs, Darien likes being hit. All sorts of new interactions come up. Marchesa, and Edric are common in my playgroup.

Darien would let them have their fun - while having a little fun of his own.

A lot of things cause me pain. Sweet sweet soldier filled pain.

Angel's Trumpet serves both to give my things vigilance or double my soldiers. It's probably the most powerful card in the deck.

Jade Monolith is extremely good and serves as an amazing political card. Opponents don't have to attack you to deal you damage, and things they expected to trade sometimes - don't.

Dingus Staff is another amazing, if occasionally dangerous, one. Make sure you have a safeword when playing with your dingus staff.

Part of the pleasure is surviving the pain. Luckily we've got a number of sweet ladies watching out for you. Soul Warden gets your life right back. Healer of the Pride will even double the deal.

Resplendent Mentor is a bit old and slow, but so's the king. If she sticks she's worth it, every soldier (with Angel's Trumpet vigilance remember) can make up the life you lost manyfold.

Lots of ways that can happen. Don't die.

A bunch of sort of accidental ways this deck can go infinite, resulting in infinite soldiers, life, damage to myself, or both.

Fanatical Devotion, Dingus Staff, Proper Burial and a Captain of the Watch for instance.

Cryptic Gateway and Stormfront Riders also incidentally ends up with infininite soldiers. Oops!

Obviously soldiers are a nice thing to have. But it's frequent that just having massive amounts of soldiers isn't going to be enough to win the game.

Thus the need for the catapults.

Catapult Master turns every five soldiers into removal.

Catapult Squad turns every two into into a shock (which can sometimes be channeled to yourself via Jade Monolith effects.

Knight-Captain of Eos is also helpful when you don't want to take damage or seek to protect a friend.

Aysen Highway + no plains on my side + Graceful Antelope or Mystic Compass = all my things are unblockable.

Personal Incarnation lets you move all damage dealt to it to you for free. Your life total tends to be either quite high or low, so the halving does less than you'd expect.
