Jhoira Artifact Storm Competitive Primer

Commander / EDH* Artifact Competitive Primer Storm UR (Izzet)

JosephJM

General Gameplan:

The goal is to summon Jhoira, Weatherlight Captain as soon as possible, storm off by playing cheap artifacts, and then win with Aetherflux Reservoir or Jace, Wielder of Mysteries .

What To Look For In Hands And Early Turns:

The most important thing is a way to get Jhoira out as soon as possible. From there you need other value engines/cost reducers and cheap artifacts to get the storm going. Generally, play the value engines/cost reducers first even if it makes you take an extra turn before you storm off.

Storming Off:

Now you've started your storm turn. Prioritize playing cards in order from lowest to highest cmc unless you need the mana from the rocks.

As you use artifacts to filter your deck, prioritize dropping cost reducers and value engines until you feel like you can storm off fully without adding more (usually this means as soon as either card:birge, god of storytelling or Teferi's Ageless Insight hit the field. Other board states can trigger this too). Make sure to save enough mana for a card that returns all artifacts back to your hand in case you run out of gas. Also drop cost reducers when you can. They will cheapen your mana rocks so you can drop more value engines. Lands and extra interaction will often be discarded.

The last thing you are looking for is a win con. Remember to count spells cast this turn because of Aetherflux Reservoir. This is the wincon that I prefer to primarily use with Jace, Wielder of Mysteries as backup but both will be tricky for your opponents to interact with.

Notable Exclusions

Thassa's Oracle

Even though this card is one of the best win-cons in the format, I opted to run Jace, Wielder of Mysteries instead. The reason for this decision is because I found myself drawing the oracle during storm turns and it being dead until actually winning. Jace is legendary so it triggers Jhoira. He also allows you to filter through your deck with his abilities.

General Tips:

Remember when storming that if you think you are going to run out of resources, to hold mana for interaction if you don't think you can win that turn.

Prioritize extra value effects (such as Artificer's Assistant or Birgi, God of Storytelling  ) to storm off faster.

Prioritize mana reducing effects (such as Etherium Sculptor) because you will need them to drop your mana rocks later in storm turns to keep going.

Cards that return all artifacts to your hand (such as Retract) are your best friend. They allow you to keep going with your storm. Make sure to save mana for them and float mana from rocks before casting them.

Remember that Birgi, God of Storytelling   has a flip side!

Remember that both Jhoira, Weatherlight Captain and Artificer's Assistant trigger from all historic spells not just artifacts.

Potential Changes:

You can add in Reckless Fireweaver, Thassa's Oracle or Laboratory Maniac if you feel like you need more wincons.

You can also add in Quicksmith Genius or Urza, Lord High Artificer if you want more value engines.

This deck also works well as a stax or value list. I've chosen to go with the storm variant but these are also viable options.

Current Build Goldfish Runs:

Rules: London Mulligan. Tested all hands I would actually keep in a game. Played assuming no interaction from opponents.

Turns to win: 4,4,3,2,4,5,4,4,4,4,2

Average: 3.64

Disclaimer/Deck Credit:

This list is based upon the budget Jhoira deck described by the youtube channel The Commander's Quarters. The video is listed below:

I have however, brewed this list myself based on lots of testing and improving of that list over the last several years to bring it to a competitive level.
