Sweet Carapace, Bro

General Theme

The idea here is to use the Locust God in a way that's not just the normal wheel-effect deck that most people see. I tried to keep card costs pretty reasonable, which makes this a little more accessible than some versions of this commander. It's not going to be ultra-competitive, but it's got a few neat tricks and interactions, and it's just fun to pilot. Seeing as it's a flying theme deck, I feel like that pun really sets the tone for the whole thing, so let's get into it...

Artifacts

  • Ashnod's Altar : We constantly have a lot of little flying creatures to sac for big mana gains.
  • Bident of Thassa : Each little bug that gets through draws cards, which makes another bug to block (pseudo-vigilance) and add more bodies to replicate during the next attack.
  • Primal Amulet  : Roughly 1/4 of the deck is instants/sorceries, so we can get this to flip just playing the deck normally, and when it does, a lot of those spells draw cards, so replicating those spells will make twice the bugs.
  • Skullclamp : This is obviously just a huge card engine once our commander is out, each bug killed by the clamp makes two more bugs. You can also enjoy infinite colorless mana and bugs with the classic Ashnod's Altar + Skullclamp combo.

  • Obviously we need a ton of mana rocks for ramp since Izzet tends to lack there, so we have Fellwar Stone , Izzet Signet , Worn Powerstone , Sol Ring , and Thought Vessel to hold all those cards we tend to have in hand. But we also have several rocks that can be sac'd in the late game for more card draw, and therefore bugs, like Hedron Archive , Izzet Cluestone , Izzet Locket , and Mind Stone .

Creatures

  • Arcanis the Omnipotent : Just tap him and you get three cards and three bugs. Just the card draw works on its own in case our commander is busy getting constantly hosed.
  • Battle Squadron : This thing just gets silly big with all these stupid bugs everywhere. Sometimes you just need a tank. A big 'ol flying tank.
  • Consecrated Sphinx : We get runaway card advantage and we get free bugs every time an opponent tries to get back in the game by drawing. Plus it flies, and we love that in this deck.
  • Crackling Drake : Part of the series of spell-buffed fliers in the deck, but his one makes another bug when it comes in.
  • Enigma Drake : The second, cheaper brother of the spell-buffed drakes.
  • Spellheart Chimera : The third, red-headed stepchild of the drake family, but it gets trample for the late games where you have lots of fuel in the graveyard.
  • Curator of Mysteries : This is both a solid flyer body and a really cheap cycle card in case we need to sneak in a one mana bug at instant speed.
  • Dominus of Fealty : Flying body to match our theme, but really it's there to steal whatever is hassling you every turn. Have fun with Ashnod's Altar + Dominus of Fealty when you kill their stuff after you attack with it and turn it into sweet sweet mana. Extra points if you don't even cast anything with it and just let it go to waste because you could. You jerk.
  • Kraum, Ludevic's Opus : Flying body, but really we're after the effect of punishing opponents for doing more stuff. Everything they do just makes more bugs.
  • Murder of Crows : This flying body was made for Locust God. Every time a bug dies, it gets replaced. You can imagine how interesting the combo with Ashnod's Altar + Murder of Crows gets when the mana is essentially free, and since the bugs are hasty, you don't even miss your attack phase with them. Add in Impact Tremors or Purphoros, God of the Forge and you can kill all your opponents instantly.
  • Niv-Mizzet, Dracogenius / Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind / Niv-Mizzet, Parun : Is it even possible to do a flying izzet deck with a card draw theme without the complete legacy of the Niv? No, it isn't.
  • Purphoros, God of the Forge : He'll never be a creature and we never care. He pings all opponents for each bug, and that gets out of hand very quickly. He's almost always the beginning of the end of the game. One big draw spell and he sends out tons of damage. Great finisher, and gets past stalled boards easily.
  • Ryusei, the Falling Star : A classic big flying body, but the key here is it helps keep the ground clear if people mess with him. Good threat to keep pinging with or keep up to block when people know if they kill him they only really damage their own board since ours is 95% flying.
  • Talrand, Sky Summoner : Like a mini Locust God in case we weren't making our point with all the bugs. Gives us an out to continue a version of our plan (if slightly less effective) if our commander is simply getting too much hate.
  • Thopter Assembly : Just keep making annoying little things that fly. Starting to get that whole swarm theme, yea? Ashnod's Altar + Thopter Assembly makes tons of mana and you can just keep recasting it by killing the little ones it poops out. Couple that with Purphoros, God of the Forge and it's 10 damage to each opponent whenever it makes its little buddies.
  • Windreader Sphinx : This is just value all around. You can double your bugs every time you attack because they all gets cards and all make replacements. This guy allows you to attack with impunity because the bugs all self-replicate on attack. Same idea as Bident of Thassa , but even more effective. And it flies. Did I mention we like flying? Good, because we do.

Enchantments

  • Coastal Piracy : Redundant Bident of Thassa because that effect is just too good with this commander. Bonus stacks if you have both out!
  • Favorable Winds : Sure, I have a ton of bugs, but what if they also doubled in P/T? Also, everything else flies (even the other tokens), so why not get some real value?
  • Impact Tremors : Purphoros Lite.
  • Mudslide : Too many people sleep on the mudslide. Don't. It wins games.
  • Opposition : Of all the interactions in this deck, this is likely the most annoying to play against. You can tap those bugs to tap their entire board. You almost always have more bugs than they have legal targets. This is total lockdown in a lot of cases.
  • propoganda: Blue good stuff.
  • Rhystic Study : Blue good stuff that makes bugs.
  • Shared Animosity : Just do some simple math and watch this get out of hand instantly when you attack with a bug swarm. You attack with a measly 5 bugs and suddenly you're throwing 5 5/1 flyers at someone. Now picture double digits, which is more likely if you've had even a couple turns with your God out...yea.

Instants

Sorceries

  • Bribery : Oh, you're looking for your big win-con fatty creature? Cool, I got you, lemme grab it for you, and I'll just put it over here with my other stuff...
  • Descent of the Dragons : Tell me you don't love the idea of attacking with a swarm of bugs, and then some ominous boss music comes in and BAM, those little shits are all dragons now. Extra sauce points if you had Purphoros, God of the Forge and/or Impact Tremors out when you did it. This is probably my favorite WTF interaction in the deck because it always changes the tone of the game from "There's an annoying bug swarm in the corner" to "Sweet baby Jesus that's a lot of dragons". They better board wipe, or it's all over.
  • Earthquake : If you can't fly, suck it.
  • Faithless Looting : You can get two bugs for one mana, and if you're ever really out of ideas, just flashback and do it again.
  • Shattering Spree : When is this ever not handy in commander?
  • Treasure Cruise : Oh look, more bugs. Didn't see that strategy coming...

Planeswalkers

  • Dack Fayden : Let's be honest, you can always use his -2 ability to take a key artifact from someone, and while that's always good to have in your back pocket, the real star here is his +1, which is just a free Faithless Looting every turn. That's card filtering and 2/2 worth of flying bodies on the board, which is money in the bank for us. At 3-casting cost, he's all value in this deck.

Lands

  • It's all pretty basic here, but we do throw in a Reliquary Tower to help hold onto our glut of cards, and a Desolate Lighthouse to give us a mana sink that makes a bug for our looting troubles. Don't forget Forgotten Cave , because cycling is still drawing, and drawing is bugs, and bugs are life.
