"It was supposed to say 'Friend Seeker' but it was much easier to change my nickname than the plate"

Mathas, Fiend Seeker

Hello!

I just recently bought a Vampire precon mainly for Teferi's Protection (my stax deck loves it) and decided to build something from the "scraps". Since someone in my playgroup has already built papa Edgar deck I decided to focus on Licia, Sanguine Tribune. After finding out we have nothing in common with each other I rebounded to Mathas. He's awesome.

My initial plan was to build a fun curse centered deck with Mathas but after finding out that my friend was already building curse centered deck (lucky for me it's not gonna be Mathas) I started to look for another route. Since I had been tinkering around building a Toshiro Umezawa deck I ultimately decided to scrap it, merge Toshiro decks cards together with cards that came with Mathas and fill the remaining empty slots with some cards I had lying around.

Decks idea is simple: Get Mathas, Fiend Seeker early on the field, start placing bounty counters and take it easy. Let your enemies do the dirty work for you and sit back. In the case they won't do your bidding despite the rewards, just do it yourself. If they come at you, try to talk some sense in to them. If that doesn't work, punish them. Teach them that it is not wise to bite the hand that feeds them.

This deck isn't as flashy as some other decks and you need to stay calm when playing this deck. Let your opponents destroy creatures with bounty counters on them. Protect yourself with cards like Dreadbore, Terminate and Ghostly Prison and wait for the right time to strike. We tend to win with either with Exsanguinate/Torment of Hailfire or with our bigger creatures.

Sorry things didn't work with us..

  • You want to brand some of those nasty creatures like a true cowboy.

  • You want to delve in to some mild politics.

  • You want something different.

  • You want to justify the reason you bought the precon deck even though you know you are not going to run papa as your commander.

  • You like cool dudes with red leather on them.

  • You also get use your older cards that suddenly became more relevant

Looking at you Bounty Hunter.

  • You want something different. This is not a curse centered Mathas deck and although we run some curse cards it's not our main plan.

  • You want to decide who lives and who dies.

  • You want to cause some chaos among your playgroup.

  • You want somewhat budgetish deck. With some changes this deck can be made fairly cheap.

Strionic Resonator - What could be better than one bounty counter? An additional bounty counter of course. Works also with some other cards like Sun Titan and Noxious Gearhulk.

Sword of the Animist - Good for ramping I guess, though I'm not so sure about this one in here.

Archangel Avacyn   - Flash, Vigilance, Flying and ability to grant instant indestructible. Flip side is just added bonus.

Bounty Hunter - Synergistic with our main man Mathas. Although he seems to be too poor to give rewards for his bounty counters, he is happy to snipe down creatures with Mathas' counters.

Butcher of Malakir - Butcher is here to make sure that our enemies will think twice before killing our creatures.

Erebos, God of the Dead - Indestructible enchantment that gives us card advantage. Neat. Even better if we can meet his devotion.

Fleshbag Marauder and Merciless Executioner - Forcing sacrifices and collecting some booty via Bounty counters.

Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet - More value to us when bodies hit the floor.

Kambal, Consul of Allocation - Nets you some life and hates your opponents.

Kokusho, the Evening Star - 5/5 flyer that can net you a huge amounts of life while draining your opponents.

Noxious Gearhulk - Destroys creatures and gives you life. Menace is a nice bonus.

Obzedat, Ghost Council - Recurring threat that is somewhat hard to get rid of.

Ogre Slumlord - Since you are encouraging killing creatures you might as well get some more value out of it.

Royal Assassin - Destroys creatures and can work as a blocker.

Sangromancer - Flyer that gives us something when creatures die.

Thalia, Heretic Cathar - Slows down our enemies and has first strike.

Tithe Drinker - I really like extort mechanic and since we are not a really aggressive deck we might as well use our excess mana for something.

Windborn Muse - Ghostly Prison on a flying body. Makes attacking us a little bit harder.

Ambition's Cost, Read the Bones and other card draws. - Card draw is always nice.

Diabolic Tutor - Don't have a Vampiric Tutor and still want to tutor a card? Use this Budget Tutor instead.

Disrupt Decorum - I really like goad mechanic. Watching your opponents attacking each other and leaving their defenses down can be devastating sometimes.

Syphon Mind - Forcing opponents to discard while you draw power from their misery? Nice!

Curtains' Call - Usually we can play this card a lot cheaper and get rid of two threats at instant speed.

Eerie Interlude - For some protection.

Return to Dust - When you want to get rid of some pesky enchantments and/or artifacts.

Authority of the Consuls and Blind Obedience - Gives us life and slows the game down.

Black Market - Helps your ramp and if left unchecked enables a huge "Pay X card".

Curse of Disturbance and Curse of Opulence - Both of these cards can help us in couple of ways. You encourage enemies to attack someone else than you and gain resources for doing it. Though I'm not fully sure about these cards at the moment I'll keep running them until I find something else that suits my agenda better.

I had both of these cards lying around and decided to give them a chance. I've been thinking about adding Elspeth, Sun's Champion for some shenanigans.

Nahiri, the Harbinger - Reverse looting and getting rid of some threats via exiling them.

Neither of these cards are mandatory though and will probably be swapped when if need for it arises to.

Our land base is pretty budgetish. Only money card here is Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth which can work as an mana fixer. You can easily cut it off if you don't want to run it.

Maybeboard has cards that I've been thinking about (but for some reason or another have not yet) including to the deck.

For example Sanguine Bond + Exquisite Blood combo is devastating and ends games quickly but isn't really all that fun to other players. It should also be noted that if you pull off a combo like that in one of your games you might just have set a target on head for upcoming matches. So think carefully before adding something like that.

If you have any suggestions/comments etc. they are greatly appreciated and I'll be more than happy to hear them!
