The Deck

This a Death and Taxes style Rule of Law deck whose primary win condition is the Heliod, Sun-Crowned + Walking Ballista.

The deck utilizing hatebears and Stax pieces with the specific goal of disrupting powerful play patterns common to competitive EDH. In general, we do not want to slow the game down for the singular purpose of slowing the game down. Rather, like in a Death and Taxes deck, this deck only wishes to prevent its opponents from winning long enough to assemble a winning play, all the while pressuring life totals. In effect, many of our hate pieces specially target Underworld Breach, Ad Nauseam, and Thassa's Oracle-based strategies.

This list is proactive, so it in general avoids playing effects that would cause it to prevent its own win. While no Heliod deck would play Null Rod or Cursed Totem, this list also plays no hard Torpor Orb effects, as they inactive three of our seven win condition tutors. Strict Proctor is the one exception, which we can pay to play around while stopping decks that use mana-neutral ETB loops to win the game.

The current iteration of the list drops hard locks and has slightly more mid-game value support.

The deck's name comes from the fact that John Darnielle hates Heliod. The previous name was It's Always Sunny in Dominaria.

Tournament Results

In 2020, I top 4'd the DDM Tournament in Philadelphia and well as the Okoberfest Tournament on Cockatrice (where I was point leader after fluid rounds). I also top 16'd the Best Boi Tournament on Cockatrice, and put up a disappointing 0-2-2 showing at the Timetwisted Tournament (which used 75 minute rounds rather than 90). Please don't play this deck in 75 minute tournaments, you will draw the game very easily.
