Isperia the Inscrutable - Spy n' Fly

Commander / EDH WU (Azorius)

GeoSandman

My first and foremost EDH deck. Essentially a toolbox of flying creatures that requires a slight bit of work, but it's fun. Strong when it gets going but not overpowered in the least, which for me is the sweet spot for a deck: it gives you plenty of options without creating too much salt.

Spy - Know something about your opponent's hand. Either look at their hand directly (Gitaxian Probe, Spy Network, Telepathy, etc) or bounce something to their hand (Equilibrium, Baral's Expertise, Cryptic Command, blah blah).

Fly - Connect with Isperia! Sometimes this requires equipping with a protection Sword or bouncing an opposing blocker. Stuff you'd want to do anyway.

For being in two colors and staying restricted to flying creatures, this can be one of the deepest toolboxes in all of EDH. What you decide to play is up to you, but here's what I've arrived at:

  • Gilded Drake is a classic.
  • Remorseful Cleric and Angel of Finality are both Tormod's Crypt. The decks that they hurt, they really hurt. Plenty of graveyard decks can rebuild, so being able to shoot a single graveyard twice in one game is usually necessary.
  • Selfless Cathar is a nice layer of protection if you don't have Greaves or a counter spell.
  • Aven Mindcensor is excellent to have access to, even if maybe you wouldn't tutor it up very often. Can just hose people. Even better if you drew it instead of searched it up.
  • Hushwing Gryff is Torpor Orb. Put Lightning Greaves on him and watch the table get sad.
  • Kira, Great Glass-Spinner is another effective layer of protection, from a different axis as Selfless Cathar. I don’t believe I would ever cut this card from the deck.
  • Wispmare because enchantments are everywhere and they have got to go.
  • Glen Elendra Archmage gives people fits.
  • Mist Raven can get you through the next turn by bouncing the right thing when you're out of information about your opponent's hand.
  • Archon of Justice is a nice rattlesnake card, especially when you’re at a low life total and the table is gearing up to kill you.
  • Karmic Guide needs no introduction.
  • Azor, the Lawbringer is a recent addition but I had to include him. He's on theme and he locks down the table beautifully. And if you can keep him alive a while, he draws a thousand cards.
  • Honestly, Consecrated Sphinx is usually the first thing I go and get. If the table feels threatened, which they should, having Consy in play makes it so easy to rebuild. You'll have beyond a full hand by the time the turn comes back around to you. There's no need to be in a rush to win even though the deck is capable of quick kills.
  • Draining Whelk is one I love to get when I'm ahead.
  • Angelic Arbiter is great in the late game when people are low on cards in hand or non-land permanents. It especially hurts red/green players.
  • Diluvian Primordial is insane. I swear by this card.
  • Emrakul, the Promised End is also nuts. I love being able to go get an Eldrazi once I have the mana for it.
