Intet Allcomers EDH

Commander / EDH

I recently got back into EDH, spearheading a league at my LGS that now draws 12+ players weekly. EDH is an odd animal, where the casual and competitive seem to intermingle in a sort of uneasy alliance. Individual players have different ideas of "fair" and "casual" and rather than try multiple leagues I decided to run a singular league and see if it can be moderated properly by the members. So far the experiment is working out. More cutthroat players are easy to pick put, and while some players just keep playing, the rest have upped their play and decklists to counter the stronger players. We have everything from enchantment tribal to turn 4 Prossh decks in our league, all accepted, but none dominating.

I am a psychologist, earning multiple degrees in the field and practicing for a few years now I have found the EDH community to be a thriving dataset for information. Observational data is abundant in the 4 pod multiplayer groups that frequent our league. I often think of EDh as an extension of the player, their deck and choices are a glimpse into their personality. Every card is a clue to the true ideals of the creator. Does the player wish to win quickly? combo off turn 4? play fatties, or use politics or psychology to win? All parameters are interesting.

Rather than sit back and watch from the sidelines, I have decided to engage the population first hand, and so I created my first EDH after not playing it for 6 or so years. To a fault I am a green player. I have played Magic since 1994, and I have always enjoyed big creatures. Through the years I have had the best luck with these creature decks. Red Green beats during ice age, UG madness during Torment, The Rock, Vintage Shops, Legacy Death and Taxes or Nic Fit. I enjoy playing fatties, but I also understand that observing the group requires me to be more of a mediator than the aggressor. With reluctance I added blue to my deck. Originally A Ruric Thar deck, I opted in to Riku the Two Reflections. RUG has always been an interesting colorway, giving me the aggression I was after while giving me some crowd control with some choice blue cards. After a few games I found myself with a pretty large target on my head. Looking over the available RUG commanders I have learned that most of them have a pretty large following of haters. I saw Intet, the Dreamer. an unassuming dragon legend, and then i started to really work on my deck. I opted for a limited budget, but I have amassed a few gems that i enjoy.

The deck plays like a creature deck, relying on the large assortment of creatures to have good in game interaction while being powerful enough to kill opponents quickly. This deck is strictly for multiplayer play, as i disdain from 1v1. I will always say that an infinite combo or two is fine, because it breaks a pod early and stops games from stalling out. In this deck i run:

Splinter Twin + Pestermite

Niv Mizzet, the Firemind + Snake Umbra

One creates infinite 2/1 hasty fliers, the other can kill one or more opponents instantly if I have a fat library. I also run Craterhoof, because green cards!

The rest of the deck is pretty stock counters and som other key spells. The mana base looks suspect, but we have A LOT of land destruction in our meta, so I run more basics. The nonbasics often become mountains so I run less mountains. Games run pretty basic. I often ramp into fatties and beat face, while holding counters. I have a lot of personal rules I abide by when deckbuilding. I don't play with instant win cards like test of Endurance or Felindar Sovereign. I also don't play any harsh life adjusters like Magister Sphinx (out of my colors but you get he point). In a pod of four I am often sitting back with a few creatures and mediating the board, watching for any gamebreaking stuff and watching how the players interact. I am very political and obviously I like to use psychology, which is easier with blue spells handy. I have made extensive changes in the deck, but i only every have one deck for a format so this deck has to cover as many bases as I can, so while it looks like I am making some odd choices, they work out well in my leagues.
