Maybeboard

A few years ago I built my first EDH deck. It was a silly, barely functional pile based on a modern deck almost entirely fueled by taplands. I'm sure a lot of people's first EDH decks look like that, full of pet cards and sub-optimal choices. It's equal parts cute and precious, as ever since I became a more experienced deckbuilder my decks haven't had the same charm that my first few do, even if they have become more optimized and functional.

This decklist is that same deck, but tweaked and revamped over and over. It's a lot better than it used to be, but still has many of the things that made it a quirky cute deck like an intensely ugly manabase and very few cards under 3 mana. The major reason why I've kept so many of my sub-optimal choices in over the years is because at some point I began proxying this deck myself with a pen and a few markers. I really didn't think it'd take so long, as I wasn't really putting much effort into it, but as time went on I began to realize that my little pieces of paper with doodles on them weren't just placeholders for cardboard I couldn't afford. It wasn't long before I valued my little doodles higher than I would a foiled out version of my deck. They're cute, unique versions of the cards I love, each an opportunity for self-expression and growth as an artist. So yeah, at some point I started to put a little more effort into them.

As far as the proxies go, the only thing I trace is the edge of the cardboard itself. Much of the art is my own design, but most cards are recreations of the card's original art in my own style. I recreate MTG artists' art as a way to study it, and many times to pay tribute to art I really like. Oftentimes though I just recreated the art if I couldn't think of some way to represent the card myself. I drew most of the art myself, but was also luckily able to get my wife to contribute a few lovely pieces, namely Krosan Tusker and my Snow-Covered Mountain. I'm also not done making this by the way that's kind of important! The cards in the decklist without my art represent cards I still need to draw. The maybeboard is where I put cards that I drew, and then cut from the deck (and also Wood Elves because I felt the need to redo that one).

Oh right, the deck. Basically the idea is to first fill our own graveyard and hand, and then hit with Yidris (preferably multiple times in one turn) to cascade into Living End or Hypergenesis, just like that modern deck. I literally don't know if it works because I've never played a commander game ever lol??

I would love nothing more than to hear what your favorite proxy of mine is if you have one. My personal favorites are my Foundation Breaker, Riverwise Augur, and my basic lands. My wife's favorites are Ketria Triome and Hornet Queen. : ) Thank you so much for reading!
