Introduction

The inspiration for this deck was my desire to play Lands or Aggro Loam in Legacy but being unable to afford the cards in the deck. At the same time, I was looking for a new commander to build around after having only one deck for about a year. I found Bobo here and knew that I would be able to build a deck around him and be happy with it. As you can see from the deck list, I've taken several inspirations from both the previously mentioned Legacy decks, as well as incorporated cards that are more effective in EDH. Over time the deck has gotten more powerful and now can hold it's own in the more competitive groups that I sometimes play in that include a pretty well-tuned Azami deck and an Oloro storm deck. Below I will be discussing many of the card choices and also going over the various ways to close out games with this deck.

Why Borborygmos?

When it comes to commanders there aren't many options in terms of great ones. I've seen a couple Wort, the Raidmother and Ruric Thar, the Unbowed decks that were pretty good, and of course there's multiple landfall oriented ones now with BFZ block, but what I love about Borborygmos Enraged is that he offers a different way to build a red/green land based deck. With his ability to dig for lands through combat damage, I actually get to see several cards in the deck, and often he will find me the land that I'm looking for without any additional searching. The ability to recast him from the command zone also gives the deck some amount of inevitability as he is a very real threat as long as I have just a few lands in hand, not to mention the magic number 7 for his power.

Strengths

Like with most red/green decks, this deck never has any wants in terms of mana. Sure the occasional bad opening seven comes up but it's a singleton format. A mulligan almost always fixes the problem. This deck shines in it's ability to explode with mana in the first couple turns. It's not even unlikely to drop a turn 2 Bobo and start smashing. Another strength is in the range of the deck. The deck is tuned around its commander, but at the same time there are several single cards that I have included that are very real threats on their own such as Scapeshift and Inkmoth Nexus + Kessig Wolf Run . This ability to have several different endgames allows the deck to always remain a threat to take out players

Weaknesses

The main weaknesses of this deck are control decks that have a heavy counter spell suite that can constantly keep my threats in check. Being able to spend a few mana to keep my 8 mana general off the battlefield is a very powerful thing to do. Because of this, I have begun to make several concessions to my weakness to permission by including several anti-counter effects. For the most part, other no other archetypes have HUGE advantages over this deck. Graveyard hate is mildly annoying as I do have a Loam engine and Crucible of Worlds .

Card Choices Show

Lands

• Snow-Covered Forest / Snow-Covered Mountain and Scrying Sheets : Most of the time there is not much of an upside to running snow basics over regular ones. However, with such a high basic count, it seemed like it only made sense to switch to snows and dedicate one of the many land slots to Scrying Sheets which can help generate some advantage and is especially effective with cards like Sylvan Library and Oracle of Mul Daya .

• Taiga , Stomping Ground , and Cinder Glade : These duals are simply the best at what they do. There's absolutely no reason to not run them if you have them

• Wooded Foothills : Contrary to what might be the norm, I have chosen to only include the one on-color fetch in this deck. It's mainly in here as one more way to get a fetch able dual out of the deck, and also plays nicely with Crucible of Worlds . I aim to keep a high basic count while also including as many utility lands as the deck allows so there isn't much room for other on-color fetches.

• Forgotten Cave / Tranquil Thicket : Cycling lands are deceivingly powerful. Being able to turn them into another card late game is a very strong ability for a land, and in this deck they are further strengthened by the inclusion of Life from the Loam .

• Command Beacon : Bobo costs 8 mana to begin. It's pretty easy to see that I don't want to be spending upwards of 14-16 mana if I need him back in play after a long and interactive game. This, along with Loam allows me to continuously play my general for his normal cost, plus the cost of loaming of course.

• Maze of Ith and Glacial Chasm : Aggro decks obviously are going to have a field day in the first few turns against this deck, but with lands like these in the deck, plus tutors to find them, I can usually stave them off until I have the means to deploy my own powerful threats to stop the decks in their tracks. Glacial Chasm has been an all-star in several games, even without help from Loam and Exploration to keep decks at bay while I can go shields down to take over the game.

• Dryad Arbor : This guy gives the deck a Turn 1 GSZ target to ramp with and also will make a token when it dies while Titania, Protector of Argoth is in play.

• Reliquary Tower : I think every EDH deck should have one of these, plain and simple. I don't want to discard an awesome hand if I don't have to.

• Drownyard Temple : When this card was first previewed I new it was something I had to test out in the deck. Upon several games with it in the deck, I can conclude that it's a very powerful card. Pitching it to Bobo's ability and then putting it into play just feels so good every time I do it.

• Cavern of Souls and Boseiju, Who Shelters All : These are somewhat recent additions to the deck. They came after the deck got blown out the first time I played a tuned Azami deck. The deck was able to hang in for a little while, but once the Azami player was able to keep his hand full of counters I just couldn't push enough through to stay in the game. My hope is that they will give me a better match-up against the deck and similar builds.

• Inkmoth Nexus : Why deal 40 when you can deal only 10? Nexus is a card that I feel is not really suspected to be in a deck like this so it's been amazing as a surprise factor. In conjunction with Kessig Wolf Run it's absolutely amazing, as anyone who played Scars/Innistrad Standard a few years ago certainly knows.

• Kessig Wolf Run : Obviously this is amazing with Inkmoth Nexus , as stated above, but it's also phenomenal with a few of the other creatures in the deck. It makes Bobo even more of a threat to win with commander damage, as well as the other big beaters that I have in the deck.

• Grove of the Burnwillows : It offers both my colors at no price to my life, and it has the additional synergy with Punishing Fire that makes this card worth a slot.

• Thespian's Stage and Dark Depths : I love being able to include this combo in the deck. Able to be assembled as early as Turn 2, this can sometimes just take people out of the game in a blink. Yes, indestructible creatures are not the hardest things to get rid of, but sometimes nobody has an answer and the Marit Lage token just does work. Wolf Run is nice to get past pesky chump blockers and Stage pairs well with Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle .

• Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle : This card alone is the reason for such a high mountain count despite the low amount of red in the deck. With Prismatic Omen out I've actually been able to deal 40+ to a player with Scapeshift . Even without the big turns, Valakut is a solid card and can chip away or get rid of smaller creatures.

• Ancient Tomb : A decent amount of big spells makes Ancient Tomb seem kind of obvious here. The extra mana it provides is always helpful.

• Strip Mine : Every deck has it's pesky utility lands that you just need to get rid of. Stip Mine does exactly that. The deck also has the potential to strip-lock players thanks to Crucible of Worlds and Azusa, Lost but Seeking or other extra land drop effects.

• Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth : Probably the strangest card choice in the whole deck. I originally brought Urborg in when I heard about the colorless spells of Oath of the Gatewatch and saw the potential of being able to produce colorless mana via making my lands all swamps in addition to their other types. Sadly, that dream never came to fruition due to the rules changes, but Urborg turned out to still be quite effective in conjunction with the 3 lands that do not normally tap for mana in the deck.

Ramp

Azusa, Lost but Seeking , Oracle of Mul Daya , and Exploration : Extra land drop effects have always been strong, and that's certainly true with a land heavy deck.

Nature's Lore , Into the North , Cultivate , Skyshroud Claim , and Nissa's Renewal : Like any ramp deck, this deck has a suite of spells to find lands and put them into play, and each of these specific ones are in for a particular reason. Nature's Lore is simply the one of the best at 2 CMC. Into the North in this deck is strictly better than Rampant Growth as it can also go get Scrying Sheets or even Dark Depths . Cultivate puts a land into my hand to either ensure I hit my land drops or make sure I have one to pitch to Bobo. Skyshroud Claim is amazing. I was originally unsure of Nissa's Renewal , but the card has more than proved itself in every game I cast it. Going from 6 to 9 mana is huge, and the 7 life is nothing to sneeze at.

Sol Ring , Mana Crypt , and Mana Vault : I've heard several people say that green ramp decks and deck focused on lands should run more land searching spells over mana rocks, but nothing can compare to the sheer power of these three rocks.

Mox Diamond : In the long run this doesn't technically net me extra mana on it's own, but the burst it gives me in the early turns allows me to start casting my ramp spells earlier and have plenty of mana in the early game.

Orcish Lumberjack : If I could play this turn one of every game I would. The burst of 3 mana it gives allows for some crazy plays in the early game like a turn 2 Bobo or even just something like Nissa's Renewal .

Lotus Cobra : Even without many fetches this card is worth including. Skyshroud Claim effectively costs 0 with it out, and it goes right along with the strategy of exploding with mana early on.

Birds of Paradise : Probably the most generic mana dork to include in a multicolor EDH deck. There was a brief trial period where this was a Boreal Druid instead but eventually there were games where not having the colored mana was slowing the deck down so it was reverted back to this.

Garruk Wildspeaker : Ever since he was printed Garruk has been a powerhouse in EDH. His +1 is one of the best mana accelerants in the deck, and his -1 has actually come in very useful if I don't have much else to do in my hand. Despite being a green deck the creature count is low here and providing free tokens is incredibly powerful

Manabond : A new inclusion to the deck. It was being tested to see if it's inclusion increased the likelihood of an early Bobo getting in to the red zone. Needless to say it did. Being able to drop my handful of lands one turn 2 or 3 allows him to come out the next turn usually. The additional bonus of this is it allows me to discard Dragon Breath so that Bobo can be swinging on turn 3, possibly turn 2 with some crazy hand that I have yet to see in a game.

Control

Dragonlord Atarka : A remnant of the earliest version of this deck, this card has been very effective in every game it's been cast. It's removal stapled to a very real clock, especially when I have another threat already on the field.

Viashino Heretic : A severely underplayed card in EDH. There's always something to blow up, and if you hit an opponent's combo piece then it's even better.

World Breaker : Originally this was Acidic Slime , but I decided that I wanted another threat in the deck, and the exile clause is certainly relevant in some of my metas. Being able to get this back is also a huge upside, especially with Bobo's mulching ability.

Beast Within and Chaos Warp : Between red and green, there is no shortage of answers to artifacts and enchantments, but these also hit planeswalkers and creatures, or even lands in a pinch, so they're pretty much auto-includes.

Krosan Grip : Originally this was Destructive Revelry , a personally favorite of mine, but I finally decided to upgrade to the best naturalize-effect for competitive playgroups. Split-second is incredibly powerful when answering a combo piece so that the combo can't be fired off at instant speed.

Scavenging Ooze : Admittedly the deck should probably have more graveyard hate, but this is all it has for now. With that said, Ooze is a strong means of checking the graveyard decks and is tutorable with GSZ. The life gain is also pretty nice to have.

Punishing Fire : There are lots of great utility creatures with 1 or 2 toughness, and this is a great, repeatable way to get rid of them thanks to Grove of the Burnwillows .

Utility

Abundance : This has a few reasons for being in the deck. First of all, it allows for some out of nowhere kills with Bobo plus Keen Sense / Snake Umbra . It also allows me to draw 3 off of Sylvan Library without losing life, as the cards are revealed and PUT INTO my hand, not drawn.

Sylvan Library : Best card draw in the format? Possibly. Library is a must in any green deck if you have one.

Prismatic Omen : Largely in here for its combo with Valakut, this also is a one card mana fixer while also preforming the same function of Urborg in the deck.

Courser of Kruphix : A solid creature to include in a land based deck, this guy generates a lot of value and a decent amount of life while also helping with Scrying Sheets and making dredge decisions a little less risky thanks to the information.

Eternal Witness and Regrowth : My opinion is that every green deck should have at least E-Witness in the 99. Regrowth is in here for redundancy of the effect and there are several cards that I want to be able to get more than one use out of.

Fierce Empath : There aren't that many 6+ CMC creatures in this list, but the ones that are included are worth having a way to tutor for them. Having essentially a second copy of Knollspine Dragon is huge for this deck.

Knollspine Dragon : Speaking of arguably the most busted card in this deck... Knollspine Dragon I think is the scariest card for me to put down. After a big swing with Bobo plus a few lands thrown, this card usually ends up drawing me anywhere from 15 to 30 cards. With Abundance out, I can make all of them lands and means somebody is biting the dust.

Runehorn Hellkite : I knew I was adding this card to this deck the moment I saw it spoiled for CMDR2016. Much like Knollspine Dragon , Runehorn allows me to unload even more lands from my hand to kill several threats on the board or just plain take an opponent out. The best part about this new dragon is that I use it from the graveyard, which is a very likely zone for it to be in with the dredging from Loam, the mulching ability of my general, or after another wheel effect like Knollspine.

Tireless Tracker : Pretty much a better Seer's Sundial . This guy generates huge card draw and can also become a pretty scary creature after a handful of activations. Being able to wait on the 2 mana to draw is great because it gives me a sink on turns where my hand is low on gas.

Crucible of Worlds : With so many lands being pitched by Bobo, Crucible is certainly a necessity. It also has strong interactions with the fetch land and Strip Mine .

Horn of Greed : A little bit of a group hug type of card, but with any extra land effect on the battlefield this card quickly becomes a bit one-sided. With Azusa out, I'm looking at 2-3 extra cards a turn for free.

Creeping Renaissance and Life from the Loam : Loam is obviously the more useful of the two, but both are incredibly powerful in this build. Creeping Renaissance allows for some pretty big turns with Bobo in play and can sometimes end the game on the spot. Loam generates huge amounts of value during the game and is especially useful with the cycling lands, Glacial Chasm , and Strip Mine .

Crop Rotation : It finds whatever land I need at the moment at instant speed. This could mean Glacial Chasm or Maze of Ith to save myself or Dark Depths to make a 20/20

Gamble and Green Sun's Zenith : The most powerful tutors in their respective colors. Loam is the most common target for Gamble , with other targets being made determined on a case by case basis. Green Sun's Zenith is a commander staple and there's a strong target for it at almost every CMC.

Wheel of Fortune : Despite being red, this is one of the most powerful draw spells in the format. This deck has a tendency to unload its opening hand very quickly so having this card allows us to reload and can sometimes mess with other players strategies. It's also phenomenal with Bobo after he empties my hand. Think smaller Knollspine Dragon .

Yavimaya Elder : This was originally Sprouting Vines . Benefits of this card over the Vines is that he will always get at least 2 lands, and getting either a third land or some gas has been very good in my testing.

Win Conditions

Commander Damage: Let's start with the simplest one. This deck is certainly not Voltron, but with a 7 power commander, getting there with commander damage is always within reach. This can be achieved simply through 3 strikes by Bobo, or pumps thanks to Dragon's Breath and Kessig Wolf Run . Note that Dragon's Breath is also great with Bobo just because it can give him haste for free.

Infect: Inkmoth Nexus + Kessig Wolf Run was king in Standard a few years back and that strength remains today. While it's not as effective in multiplayer, keeping anyone at the table under the constant threat of just dying to Nexus is a great way to deter aggression towards you and is a way to take out players that are on the verge of winning the game.

Dark Depths + Thespian's Stage : The premiere wincon of Lands in Legacy, 40 life doesn't stop the Marit Lage token from being insanely good. With the right hand this combo can happen Turn 2 and players are swept away soon after. Being able to rinse and repeat should someone remove the token is even better as it gives a bit of inevitability.

Prismatic Omen + Scapeshift + Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle : Yet another win condition stolen from competitive formats. With Omen out Valakut is very often lethal for at least one player. If Thespian's Stage is also a copy of Valakut then I can usually take out the whole table.

Avenger of Zendikar : This creature can quite simply take over the game given the chance. With 7+ lands out and a few land drops, suddenly the table is looking at 30+ power with the potential for much more.

Throwing Lands: The signature way to win a game. With cards like Knollspine Dragon and Creeping Renaissance , Bobo can deal upwards of 60 damage in one turn. With Grafted Exoskeleton , 4 lands kills, making it extremely easy to take out the whole table in one sweep.

Concessions to Blue-heavy Metas

As stated in the introduction, this deck is specifically weak to decks that have large amounts of permission. To try to combat this flaw, I have added the following cards:

Mulligans

This deck mulligans pretty well. Things to look for in the 7 are at least 2 lands, at least 2 forms of ramp, and usually a utility card. Don't be afraid to keep a hand of only lands and ramp. Bobo is more than happy to come down as early as possible.

Early Game

The beginning of the game is almost entirely focused on getting as much mana acceleration as possible. The deck wants to drop Bobo as early as possible to start pressuring the other players. Getting cards like Azusa, Lost but Seeking and Tireless Tracker to get ahead on cards and mana are very important on turns 2 and 3. Sylvan Library is also a card that should be played ASAP if it's drawn.

Mid-Game

I believe that the middle of the game begins once real threats can start to come down, and in my experience this is normally around Turn 4. At this point the deck should have enough mana to produce most of it's threats. If there's nothing to do, getting a Loam train going to get a handful of lands for the eventual arrival of Bobo if it hasn't happened already. This is typically where something like Marit Lage or Avenger of Zendikar make an appearance usually and start to take over the game.

Late Game

By Turn 7 or 8, if the game makes it there, every deck typically has all the mana it needs to operate and is focused on either furthering its own plan or tampering with that of others. For this deck, this stage means looking to recast Bobo if he's been removed and focus on pushing every advantage. Several of the win conditions of this deck rely on critical mass, and chipping away at life totals at every opportunity make achieving that critical mass much easier. Several of the win conditions are also able to be recycled so don't be afraid to make risky plays to force other players' hands and run their resources low.
