5C Hermit Druid Combo: Elemental Edition!

Here's my attempt at making a competitive Horde of Notions deck. No, this is not your ordinary Elemental tribal deck that pub stomps your local playgroup, but a deck that can win super fast with a cheap combo. It was actually coincidence midway through building the deck that I realized that the combo was basically the same as this deck's, however there are slightly less options for backup plans, making Horde of Notions a slightly less reliable general for Hermit Druid shenanigans, but still a relatively decent one.

Combo

This combo costs to initiate, along with a Hermit Druid without Summoning Sickness. There are about 13 Tutors for him alone, so finding him shouldn't be too difficult. Here's the basic way to kick off the combo:

1) ,; Put your entire library in grave (we don't use any basics)

  • This triggers Narcomoeba.

  • Unearth Fatestitcher for .

    • it to untap a land (for either protection if you have extra mana or for the next step.

2) Flashback Dread Return for Necrotic Ooze (Nooze)

This is the basic combo that you use in 5C Hermit Druid.

3) Using your copious amounts of mana, cast Horde of Notions.

4a) You can cast Flamekin Spitfire from the graveyard, then infinitely ping all your opponents.

4b) You can also use Spikeshot Elder's ability via Nooze to also machine gun your opponents down.

Why Horde of Notions is a Good Commander

  • Super low curve. Believe it's possible to make the deck's average mana cost less than two, but I can't think of any other backup plans with infinite mana.

  • Can combo out super easily. It costs a minimum of to win with this deck.

Why Horde of Notions is Probably Not Tier 1

  • Has all the same weaknesses as the original Hermit Druid Combo.

  • ...and there's not many other alternate ways to win with this deck so far that I can think of. Gotta not being able to cast your commander.

  • Falls to hate bears. Gaddock Teeg is a nightmare for this deck. That's why we have removal.

Endnote

Horde of Notions is actually a pretty decent commander. He has access to a cheap combo that takes a little investment and it's elementals for goodnesses' sake! One of the drawbacks of the deck is that it is a one-trick pony for the most part and doesn't have much of a backup plan, unlike Scion of the Ur-Dragon.
