I'd been trying to create a hyper-group-hug deck with both Phelddagrif and Zedruu the Greathearted , under Kynaios and Tiro of Meletis . I felt like it was trying to do too much, but I love me some happy hippo and givee goat, so I decided to split them back into two different decks that could stand on their own.

This version of my Phelddagrif deck is a heavy control shell that should enable you to play politics and make deals while you assemble combo pieces. I tried to focus on instant speed removal and permission cards that come with an up side, hopefully patching some hurt feelings with a few cards drawn ( Arcane Denial , Oblation ) or tokens in play ( March of Souls , Pongify , Terastodon ).

The Advocate cycle ( Nullmage Advocate , Pulsemage Advocate , Spurnmage Advocate ) and Skullwinder let other players return cards from their graveyard to their hand, helping the table keep threats under control by recurring counter-magic and removal as it's needed, and letting you make deals.

I included the normal pillow-fort suite of Ghostly Prison effects, and a healthy pile of creatures with Defender to protect you in the early game and synergize with Axebane Guardian and Overgrown Battlement for ramp and combo potential. Thing in the Ice   is a great rattlesnake card, providing synergy with your suite of instants and sorceries and defender cards. Even if it never triggers, the threat of it doing so at instant speed can keep people in line.

The two combos that win the game are:

The titular hippo cannon is Phelddagrif + Intruder Alarm + any mana dork, which allows you to grant infinite hippo tokens to an opponent of your choice. If you have two mana dorks, it also provides infinite mana. If you have Suture Priest , each of those hippos deals 1 damage, hence the cannon in question.

Archangel of Thune + Fathom Mage + Horizon Chimera , which lets you draw as many cards as you want while pumping all the creatures on your board and gaining life. Laboratory Maniac and Psychosis Crawler with the combo add lethal intent if you aren't interrupted.

They are convoluted and cheesy and require many pieces to work, but if you can survive and clear the way, it can give you a win. At worst, it can make for a fun, political game with lots of interaction.

Updates Add

I've really enjoyed this deck, but I feel like it could use some additional card draw / filtering / tutors. Any ideas on good cards to add / remove?

Currently thinking the removed cards will include some combination of: Tatyova, Benthic Druid, Selvala, Explorer Returned, March of Souls, Blunt the Assault, and Fog. Maybe Relic Crush or Sylvan Reclamation.
