Farewell, Fabled Hero —Dec. 12, 2014

Fabled Hero has proven to be either a "win more'' card or a hindrance to the deck. I find that whenever play him, I would have probably had more value if he were either Hero of Iroas or Phalanx Leader. And drawing him early was terrible.

I tried him out, everybody. He's not for this deck.

I'd been keeping at first Herald of Anafenza and then Nyxborn Shieldmate in the deck for two reasons: one, to be able to play a cheap soldier as early as possible, leading to two, to play Obelisk of Urd as early as turn 3.

I'm going to make some adjustments and test. I think the format is such that I can slow this deck down a little and not lose overall performance. I'll be removing three 1-drops (Nyxborn Shieldmate) and one 2-drop (Hero of Iroas) for two 2-drops (Vanguard of Brimaz) and two 3-drops (Fabled Hero). Adding Fabled Hero will please quite a few people.

I had bad luck with Vanguard of Brimaz in my other deck, Urd Be Thy Name. I'm willing to try it in this deck now because of it being mono-white.

Abzan Falconer fits my plans too well to remove, and I have had success with it in testing.

Sunbond doesn't fit this deck, but I cannot deny how cool it'd be to have one attached with Ordeal of Heliod on the board. It looks really good in 6000/6000 Fabled Hero? Me likey!

Thanks for your feedback! The deck is improving.

I would like splashing green, for Hardened Scales, Reap What Is Sown, and Solidarity of Heroes. Maybe some more good cards. other than that, I think using Akroan Skyguard over Hero of Iroas might be a good choice, because you aren't running enough falconers to consistently get your creatures flying. Other than that, this deck looks great :D.

HI! :D

I'm building a R/W version of this deck (Heroes of Strength and Swiftness)

I got 3 questions!

1). How does the Urd actually works? I mean, is it too expensive? How is 4 working out for you?

2). Do you also feel, that Fabled Hero can be a little slow?

3). How is Chosen by Heliod working for you? Is it good or bad? If Dragon Mantle where white, would you then rather play it?

Heya, NorthernRaven! Great questions.

  1. Obelisk of Urd grants +2/+2 to the creature type of your choice. I choose Soldiers. You could choose Goblins, Hounds, or even Humans if you wanted. The card can be Convoked, which means you can tap creatures to help cast the spell. This essentially turns it into a 3-drop, but leaves your creatures tapped out. I like having 4 because it gives me the best chance to see one for certain in game 1, and gives me something to side out for games 2 and 3. The ideal way for the deck to start is as such:
    • Turn 1: Plains, play Favored Hoplite.
    • Turn 2: Plains, pass turn. During your opponents end step, play Raise the Alarm.
    • Turn 3: Plains, tap 3 plains and 3 creatures to Convoke Obelisk of Urd.
    • Turn 4: Attack for 9 damage. Commence the beatdown.
  2. I initially didn't include Fabled Hero because it is expensive and a major target for removal. Tappedout users have sold me on including it, and it's working out really well in testing. It can draw removal away from Phalanx Leader and Abzan Falconer. Also, you sometimes need something big mid-to-late game if the Obelisk doesn't work out, and with protection in hand, Fabled Hero can be a beast.
  3. I like Chosen by Heliod. It draws cards and gets Heroic creatures out of -3/-3 removal range if an Obelisk isn't it play. I would definitely play another 1-drop cantrip such as Dragon Mantle, if there were another in white. Perhaps we'll see one in Fate Reforged. Playing Hero of Iroas turns Chosen by Heliod into a one drop, which works for me.

+1 to your deck! Looks like fun.

I want to know your opinion if you dont mind... Have you thought about lifelink? I think it is a broken ability and it works well in my sidisi reanimator deck (I know it is diferent play styles but still). My friend plays a U/W heroic that consists in making his creatures unblockable and pretty huge with lifelink. I once tried this out by adding Gods Willing and Feat of Resistance to a boros aggro i was building. It worked nice but it needed some other ways to get damage through. The way you give flying to your creatures is nice but what about Seeker of the Way or Dawnbringer Charioteers? I want to know what you think about Eidolon of Countless Battles too. It works just nice with Vanguard of Brimaz and Raise the Alarm. Perhaps it is another wincon?

I run Glimpse the Sun God in my version. Usually wins games if at the opponents end step I tap his creatures as well as my Phalanx Leader. I also run High Sentinels of Arashin as I mentioned, and he gets huge because of all the counters. Might want to consider Glimpse and/or Sentinels as a side boarder.

I'll see if I can work them in. Thanks!

A lot of potential here. I would strongly consider Ainok Bond-Kin, Akroan Skyguard, and sideboarding that white paragon.

Red would be a okay splash. Akroan Crusader is a beast, and Satyr Hoplite isn't terrible. Akroan Hoplite would be great for going wide. Coordinated Assault is a double heroic trigger for two. Seems good.

You also could consider splashing green. Hardened Scales would be OP. Nature's Panoply is okay, Reap What Is Sown is great. Settesan tactics would be good removal.

You could also run Anax and Cymede if you go RW.

Thanks for the feedback, MarduMaster. I ran a R/W Soldier Tribal deck named Urd Be Thy Name at an FNM and went 2-3. The deck was fun. I had some trouble drawing enough mana of one color or the other. It was probably just some bad draws, but it led me to building this mono-white deck.

I've put together Vanilla Parsley Ice Cream as a prototype G/W Heroic deck. I plan on making one with Obelisk of Urd sometime soon.
