So I figured a combination of cards that trigger when you cast a spell that targets them, and a creature that can eat spells before they resolve could have some potential. Also, Young Pyromancer.

Yeah, this is pretty much what it says in the title. Hopefully the Heroic mechanic can be a thing, I suppose you might call this a thing-testing shell.

Here's why I chose my creatures:

  • Akroan Crusader - A one-drop with a Heroic Young Pyromancer ability, except the tokens have haste? Sign me up!

  • Nivmagus Elemental - One of the reasons for building the deck, li'l Nivvy should be able to get pretty big, pretty quick, and of course you can always choose to let your spell resolve if you need to (or eat a spell that gets countered!) - then sneak him through the Rogue's Passage for the alpha swing.

  • Arena Athlete - A way to help get damage through; the fact that all the instants and sorceries are so cheap means that this guy can easily prevent at least 2 or 3 creatures from blocking if need be.

  • Young Pyromancer - What more needs to be said about this guy? Once he gets going he's very tough to stop. Again, you only need to cast the spell to get the token, so Nivvy can then eat it, cos he's a little fatty, yes he is.

  • Guttersnipe - Free damage whenever you cast an instant or sorcery! Yaaayyy!

  • Phantom Warrior - This guy is here as a cipher target, no more, no less. Sure, he's no Invisible Stalker, but we have to work with what we've got. I guess he can get some damage through if you don't have Hidden Strings in hand?

  • Triton Fortune Hunter - Heroic card drawing; basically turns any of your one-mana instants into cantrips (without them needing to resolve!), which can then - that's right - be eaten by Nivvy.

  • Labyrinth Champion - Heroic Guttersnipe that can take out creatures as well, the Champion provides a solid top end for the curve.

Aaaaand the non-creature spells:

  • Coordinated Assault , Gridlock , Triton Tactics , and Flames of the Firebrand - these are all here for their ability to target more than one creature. Gridlock in particular could potentially activate all your Heroic creatures at once! Huzzah! (Obviously timing is important when you're tapping your own creatures.)

  • Mizzium Skin provides hexproof in a pinch to protect Nivvy, or a ciphered-up Phantom Warrior, or whatever.

  • Spark Jolt and Titan's Strength - these are mostly Nivmagus fodder, but the scry could be useful for sure, as well as their normal....uses....nevermind

  • Hidden Strings - this is a somewhat experimental attempt to give cipher multiple uses; the ciphered copy can be eaten by Nivvy (assuming it gets to the point of being cast), it can be used to target two Heroic creatures, or...I dunno, you tell me.

  • Firemind's Foresight - Okay, okay, things are getting a little ridiculous now, but bear with me - the spells you'll be searching up with this bad boy are worth the effort (for their elemental-buffing and Heroic-triggering potential), and come on, it would be awesome to actually be able to use this instantly-dismissed card for something other than a proxy. And if by some strange chance you've used all your 2- and 3-mana cost spells, you can just have Nivvy chomp it down! Seriously, he loves that shit.

Ideas and sideboard suggestions welcome!! In case you're wondering, Trait Doctoring is in there for the lulz of creating different coloured tokens with Akroan Crusader or Young Pyromancer, who knows, it might help beat Master of Waves , haha. Anyway, cheers ;)

Updates Add

So, seeing as how I only got one Steam Augury in my booster box, I've decided to try running a single Elite Arcanist for tonight's FNM in its place to see if it can actually achieve anything. Wish me luck!!

Results shall be posted following the event.
