Hentai Strikes Back

Modern Control GU (Simic)

Hello everyone,

This thread is dedicated to the brewing of a modern version of UG Crush. Budget consideration is a thing here, trying to keep it tight. I will list cards that are to be considered in non budget build however.

--- Why playing Crush OF Tentacles ---

As indicated by the title of the deck, my attraction to japanese loli made me do it.

Jokes apart, Crush of Tentacles is reminiscent of an amazing card from way back (this will probably trigger nightmares to some of you) : Upheaval. However, Crush of Tentacles comes with a handy feature, the surge mechanic allows you to cast it for one mana less if you have casted a spell before this turn AND if you do so, gives you an 8/8 token, so you improve your board state.

The deck "existed" as a standard deck, that you can find here : https://www.channelfireball.com/articles/deck-of-the-day-ug-crush-of-tentacles/

So what are we lookig at in order to make it modern viable ? let's check it out.

We want to keep the Lumbering Falls, since Man Lands don't get affected by the effect of Crush Of Tentacles. The rest of the manabase will consist of traditional lands from modern, including Breeding pool, flooded grove, hinterland harbor, Misty Rainforest, and Yavimaya coast. I'm not a huge fan of the recent fastlands in decks like this. Filter lands however are great in bi-color decks. The manabase is really work in progress.

The creatures from the standard version are interesting, including Bounding Krasis, but modern has some great stuff. Coiling Oracle and Mystic Snakes are always a good addition. We also want cheap spells, like Opt or Serum visions in order to trigger Surge.

We want to ramp into Crush of Tentacles really quick, and as such, we will play with arbor elf/ Utopia Sprawl. It works great with Breeding pool as well. We need some counterspell, but not too much. I feel like mainboard mana leak and or Condescend are ok. Cryptic command might be good, as well as snapcaster.

Both Kiora are interesting, despite being expensive. IT might be just bad, I'm still testing. As I said, Bounding Krasis attract me, Trygon Predator is its replacement in the sideboard. Coiling Oracle seems great, as is Mystic Snake. Azusa allow us to go nut on some draws, and Jace is still good addition. Please feel free to comment and recommend things. I'm not sure at all about this build, and try to keep the fun real !
