4th Place in Standard! —Nov. 21, 2012

This week, I went 3-1 once again in standard but did not make the top three to qualify for prizes due to tiebreakers.

Round 1: I faced another Rakdos deck that did not use Nocturnus. The highlight of this match was hitting Mutilate with multiple blood artists in play, which both cleared the board and caused a lifeswing of 18 (9 for each player). Any deck that uses red utilizes Mizzium Mortars- except for my own. I won this matchup 2-1, as my deck was a bit faster.

Round 2: I came up against a control deck. Scary! Match 1, I exhausted my hand while my opponent kept a good hand full of removal and things. Then instead of drawing business, I hit a land-flood. In the second match, I hit Rakdos's Return for 7 while my opponent had 7 cards in hand- but no counter spell! That sealed the win. Then, in the deciding match, I won out with Olivia Voldaren stealing creatures. I won 2-1.

Round 3: Jund! What can you do against Jund? If you don't have good draws, you can sit there and twiddle your thumbs. My draws were not good and Sever the Bloodline was surprisingly good here. Huntmaster of the Fells  Flip is a little bit too strong for what it does, but at least I could always cast one spell every turn to keep it from flipping. I lost 0-2.

Round 4: Another Jund deck, this one played out a little differently. I stomped on it early and often. Both games, I finished with Rakdos's Return, which proved timely this week. Last week, I didn't even get to play it. I won 2-0.

The control deck I played against in round 2 drew in the final round, skewing my tie-breakers, so I finished fourth. 3-1 in consecutive weeks is pretty good. So far, this deck has proved solid against a variety of matchups.

It's a bit faster, which is good. No one thinks to kill the Interlopers, and if they do, it's usually with Pillar of Flame or somesuch. I found out that people want to kill the vampires before Nocturnus comes out, which makes lower-cost vampires better, since they draw removal quicker.
