Heliod Hulk is a compact hulk deck that is capable of instant speed wins along with offering a list that remains interactive throughout the game. Having Tymna and Thrasios as commanders come with the usual benefits of the dynamic duo, such as incremental card draw and placing us in one of the best 4 color combinations in Commander. This deck attempts to use the "Heliod, Sun-Crowned" and "Walking Ballista" combo to win with infinite ping damage.

The deck was developed a couple days after Heliod, Sun-Crowned was spoiled to create a potential hulk line out of the interaction with Walking Ballista . The benefits to this hulk line is that it is quite compact and slot efficient. This allows us to really just jam in more goodness into the deck. Since both combo pieces are "creatures" and "artifacts/enchantments" they are easy to tutor for. However, both pieces are also more susceptible to different hate pieces. Compared to other existing hulk piles, Heliod Hulk is also more mana intensive requiring to go off at instant speed.

Disclaimer: The inception of this deck was prior to the spoiler of Thassa's Oracle and will need to be updated accordingly.

The Heliod Hulk Pile

Pile consists of: Heliod, Sun-Crowned (THB) Walking Ballista (AER) Soul's Attendant (ROE) Veteran Armorer (RAV)

The pile requires to go off at instant speed.

  1. Veteran Armorer will keep Walking Ballista alive at 0/1.
  2. Soul's Attendant will trigger 3 times giving us 3 distinct 1 life gain.
  3. In turn this will trigger Heliod, Sun-Crowned ability to place 3x +1/+1 counters on Walking Ballista .
  4. Pay to activate Heliod, Sun-Crowned to give Walking Ballista lifelink.
  5. Remove a +1/+1 counter from Walking Ballista to deal 1 damage lifelink to an opponent and gain 1 life.
  6. Life gain will trigger Heliod, Sun-Crowned and give Walking Ballista a new +1/+1 counter

Infinite Mana

Freed from the Real + Bloom Tender or Faeburrow Elder can generate infinite mana. With Thrasios, Triton Hero on the board we can then draw the deck and play Walking Ballista for .

  1. Universal Hulk Hate: Grafdigger's Cage shuts down creatures being fetched by Protean Hulk 's death trigger. Leyline of the Void and Rest in Peace completely shuts down Protean Hulk 's death trigger as creatures are exiled instead of dying normally. That is why this list runs Force of Vigor .

  2. Activated Creature Ability Hate: The combo is also weak to Cursed Totem and Linvala, Keeper of Silence effects as these cards shuts down both Heliod, Sun-Crowned and Walking Ballista .

  3. Creature "Enter The Battlefield" Hate: Cards like Torpor Orb and Hushbringer shuts down the Soul's Attendant triggers in the hulk pile.

  4. Activated Artifact Ability Hate: Cards like Null Rod , Stony Silence , and Collector Ouphe shuts down Walking Ballista . This is why in addition to the typical Golgari instant removals Assassin's Trophy and Abrupt Decay this list runs Swords to Plowshares .

This deck still needs more testing, but these are some cards that may make the deck more resilient.

Alternative win conditions:

Protection

Value

  • Smothering Tithe This can generate a lot of mana which is perfect for our mana intensive Hulk Pile.

  • Ancient Tomb Considered for helping with ramp and to help with the mana cost of the Hulk Pile.

The base shell of the deck is referenced from Sleepy and Shaper's CST and Pongo's Sacred Hulk .
