Hello everyone, it's been a while. Sorry I haven't updated the deck in about two and a half months, but a lot has been going on in my life and I haven't really had time. I just graduated from college last month and the time I've spent playing magic has been with new brews that I've been trying out (which you should totally check out because they're tight). I'm ready to start getting back to my roots and frog some people to death though, so I'll let you all know where I'm at with the deck:

The biggest changes are the mainboard additions of Utopia Sprawl and Collective Brutality, so I'll start there. One of the biggest issues I have had with the deck has been consistency. The games where we do not draw Heartless Summoning often feel abysmal. Utopia Sprawl gives us another way to accelerate so that we can play our threats on time, and it decreases the amount of anemic draws our deck has. Modern is not a format where you can afford to durdle for very long, and Sprawl will help speed the deck up. Collective Brutality was added to the mainboard as well in the place of Inquisition of Kozilek. I like the flexibility of Brutality as well as its synergy with Gitrog and Ramunap Excavator, as well as it increases the amount of removal in the deck, which I like since modern has shifted towards being more creature-heavy.

The Sideboard changes were mostly to get rid of cards that simply do not get the job done when drawn. I'm adding cards I have used previously to good effect with Engineered Explosives, as well as I'm trying out some options that have been decent in testing with Chameleon Colossus and Thragtusk. Grazing Gladehart has been a very good option thus far against aggro decks, so I'm going to keep going with it for now.

Again thanks for the suggestions, sorry this update took a long time.

Last note: Congratulations to Josh Flansberry on your IQ win with this! Here's a link to his list: https://mtgtop8.com/event?e=19329&d=322769&f=MO

Would love to see you head up a full primer on mtgsalvation for this bad boy. Seeing your thought process on cards and different build choices as well as a full sideboard and matchup guide would make my life.

I have been considering trying to build a similar deck and I have a few questions:

  1. Does Heartless Summoning feel bad with Knight of the Reliquary since it only reduces the cost of KotR by 1? Or does the gas that KotR provide far outweigh that you don't get full value out of heartless?

  2. How much does Life from the Loam help? I see you already run 4 Ramunap Excavators. Is the extra redundancy necessary?

  3. Kind of like G/W value, does it make sense to have some number of Eldritch Evolution in your 75? I can see it being helpful to grab sideboard tech, or find your win condition. Also allows you to turn redundant effects (like multiple excavators) into the card you need.

  4. With the light splash of white, I can see Aven Mindcensor being solid being on the Ghost Quarter plan. However, he obviously dies with Heartless Summoning out. In your opinion, would Lotus Cobra be a solid substitute for summoning if I wanted to play mindcensor? Or would Utopia Sprawl be better? Cobra gets to be more explosive once I get some of the value creatures out and does a better job of mimicking summoning. But, sprawl gets me my turn 3 plays on turn 2.

  5. Any room for either Liliana of the Veil, or Liliana, the Last Hope? I can see LotV being great with The Gitrog Monster, discarding lands to make her discard effect one sided, and LtlH being great at bringing back key creatures that your opponent rudely destroyed.

@TheDuggernaught

  1. I've been back and fourth on Knight. What I really like about it is that it's a game ending threat if it isn't dealt with and it synergizes really well with the rest of the deck. I'm not totally sold on splashing basically just for it being 100% correct, but I've been trying it.

  2. I haven't made an update to the list in a hot minute, but I'll probably be cutting Loam. It seems really good on paper, but it's been really clunky in practice. I just have not gotten around to updating because of school mostly.

  3. What makes Eldritch Evolution so great in GW Value is that you can turn your turn one mana dorks into a sideboard card on turn two. Against decks like burn, storm, or dredge you need things like Eidolon of Rhetoric, Courser of Kruphix, or Scavenging Ooze before turn three or you're just going to get run over, and Evolution essentially gives you an extra copy of each. In our list, trading a three drop creature for either a Gitrog Monster or Ob Nixilis on Turn 4 at the earliest isn't quite good enough to use a slot.

  4. I think if you want to play Aven Mindcensor or Lotus Cobra, you'll probably just want to play GW Valuetown over trying to resolve Gitrog Monsters and Ob Nixiliss (Ob Nixili?). I think Cobra is really sweet with Tracker since you rarely will have turns where you aren't able to use all of your mana since you're cracking clues, but the deck would need a lot of reworking with the Cobras. It seems really sweet though.

  5. I've played more midrangy Gitrog Lists in the past running things like Liliana of the Veil and Lingering Souls and I think Liliana shines in those decks. The problem with her here is basically that we don't really have the slots for her. I'm not sure what we can cut for her. I like Liliana the Last Hope off of sideboard though. There are a decent amount of good x/1s in Modern that we want to kill as well as she grinds well against control and midrange decks.

Thanks for the questions, I hope I answered them well. I'm still messing with the list pretty often so don't take it for gold. There are definitely ways the deck can be improved, and I'm trying to figure that out as I go.

@Nartana Thank you, I'm happy you like it! I'm still figuring out the list as I go and my sideboard changes basically daily, so I'll try and post a sideboard guide on here at some point.

@packbuckbrew

I like to play so much with it, its use one my favorite card (Heartless Summoning). After some tests, have some cards i have in mind, but dont figure a slot, just throwing:

+1 Ob Nixilis, the Fallen - show to be one of the best wincon of deck

Rampaging Baloths seens a good payoff

Nissa, Vastwood Seer  Flip Ramp and draw

Summoner's Pact sometime just need 1 creature to continue the go off

Let me know what you think about.

@ghgiunco Thanks for the comment, happy you like the deck. On your suggestions I'll take them one by one:

+1 Ob Nixilis, the Fallen: I agree with you that Ob Nix is a very reliable way to just win the game on the spot. I do, however, like him only as a two-of because he's abysmal to draw multiples of, and since we get to dig and shuffle a lot with this deck between Gitrog, Tireless Tracker, and Oracle of Mul Daya, we are able to find him quite often. While I love Ob, I prefer him as a 2-of rather than a 3-of.

Rampaging Baloths: I've considered the beast engine a few times, and I haven't actually tested it, but it's something worth trying. The only problem I see with it is that it would definitely be replacing Ob Nix, and I'm not sure if going wide with a bunch of beasts is better than just draining our opponent and getting a huge Ob Nixilis. Worth trying though.

Nissa, Vastwood Seer  Flip: This card is very interesting and I think I'd be willing to try it. It would probably take the spot of the Edge of Autumn in the main, since it acts as an alternate way to ramp, as well as it can draw us cards once we have enough lands. It's something I'll probably test.

Summoner's Pact: I'm not huge on Pact just because we have a lot of ways of powering out creatures already. It's really bad when we don't have Heartless Summoning out since we really can't play it until turn 4 on, and when we have Heartless out it stifles our turn following the Pact resolution. It feels like one of those cards that are great when you're already ahead, but really bad when you're behind.

I hope I answered your question well, thank you for the suggestions :D

@packbuckbrew

Seens like Nissa the best candidate to Maindeck agree easy replace Edge of Autumn as .... 1 or 2off ?! Have a good synergy. If you play with it, say me how its work, if its worth to buy, pls.

And about +1 Vizier of the Menagerie to fast find it? Hte crazy plays i do was when i cast Vizier

On Baloth i think in 1off just to up threats.

And thanks to reply. =)

How do you beat jund? You say it's a good matchup but I haven't had the same experience. They just have every answer for everything we have.

Hey Todd. Still following this deck. I have had moderate success with it, but it is extremely dependant on getting the engine going. Some thoughts... I noticed that most of my games come down to the incidental life loss i am taking from endless fetching. Trying Pulse of Murasa to shore that up. Also I tried a one-of Tamiyo's Journal which has proven to be both a pain if stuck in my opening hand and extremely powerful to dump 3 counters on my trackers and tutor up Ob. Deck still needs tweaks but it is powerful and fun in the right matchups.

@Nartana, I'll admit mainboard is pretty difficult against Jund, but I've been pretty successful after sideboard because we are able to take out the less-potent top-decks that our deck has. I usually will cut all of our Inquisitions, 2-3 Heartless Summonings, and an amount of Wayward Swordtooths for Abrupt Decay, 2 Collective Brutality, 2 Obstinate Baloths, 2 Scavenging Ooze, and a Whisperwood Elemental, so we are more capable of grinding with them. I might just get lucky a lot against them, but I have found the matchup to be somewhat favorable for us.

@xt3kn1x I'm actually not Todd Stevens, a friend of mine sent him the list and he really liked it, so he decided to start streaming it. Pulse is a card that I considered when I first made the list, but I kind of just forgot about it. It seems good, and I will probably test it out. I've been pretty busy with exams coming up and everything so I haven't had a chance to try many things out, but I'll try it once I'm (finally) free.

@packbuckbrew My apologies. I don't really follow Todd, but assumed you and he were the same. Regardless, it's been a fun ride. I haven't played much modern these past couple of weeks either, but I will report any cool fun interactions I find. Thanks!

@Nartana Sorry! I've been really busy the past month, I just graduated from undergrad, so it's been pretty crazy. I've switched from this deck over to trying out goblin brews for modern, but I may come back to it in a bit.
