BREAKTHROUGH

Favored Hoplite REEEEALLY likes to fight things with Setessan Tactics ... or any other fight card... awesome.

Hardened Scales seems pretty good with heroic.

You have a Hardened Scales and a Fabled Hero on the board. On turn 3.

Turn 4, swing in, and before blocks cast Feat of Resistance naming a color to get yourself through. Heroic triggers, put a +1/+1 counter on Fabled Hero, Hardened Scales triggers, put another one on. Now Feat of Resistance resolves... protection from (black), put a +1/+1 counter on Fabled Hero, Hardened Scales triggers again, put another +1/+1 counter on Fabled Hero.

All of a sudden, you're 2/2 double strike has gained 4 +1/+1 counters from one spell, and it swinging through. Uh oh, now they are trying to burn him out with a few red removal spells... welp, good thing we also have Ajani's Presence in hand. Cast that on Fabled Hero... heroic trigger... put a +1/+1 counter on Fabled Hero... Hardened Scales triggers, put another +1/+1 counter on him. Ajani's Presence resolves, Fabled Hero gets +1/+1 until end of turn and is Indestructible.

Now you have a Fabled Hero with 6 +1/+1 counters, protection from (red) and (black), and +1/+1 and indestructible and double strike until end of turn.

That's a 9/9 Fabled Hero

Hardened Scales makes heroic triggers very very awesome.

*NEW THOUGHT!

Hero of Iroas plus ordeal of heloid or Ordeal of Nylea seems like some neat triggers too...

Hero of Iroas can make aura spells cost 1 less, and they, of course, trigger heroic. The ordeals put counters on the creature they enchant, so this offers many more checks for Hardened Scales.

For Example...

Turn 1: Forest, Hardened Scales

Turn 2: Plains, Hero of Iroas

Turn 3: any untapped land, Ordeal of Heliod , Ordeal of Nylea , Ordeal of Heliod onto Hero of Iroas . They each cost 1 because of Hero of Iroas ...

First trigger from targeting Hero of Iroas with first Ordeal, put a +1/+1 on the hero, Hardened Scales checks, put another +1/+1 on Hero of Iroas .

2/2 to 4/4

Second trigger, same thing...

4/4 to 6/6

Third trigger, same thing...

6/6 to 8/8...

Now swing with your Hero of Iroas with 6 +1/+1 counters on it. Each Ordeal will add another counter, and because they are their own instance of placing counters, each counter added will be checked with Hardened Scales, in which case you'll put a total of 6 more +1/+1 counters on Hero of Iroas .

8/8 to 14/14... attacking... Ordeal of Heliod x2 and Ordeal of Nylea will both POP. You gain 20 life, and get two basic lands to the battlefield.

I should probably think about adding these things.
