Maybeboard

(UPDATED AS OF DOMINARIA)

Tymna the Weaver + Sidar Kondo of Jamuraa Shadowborn Apostle deck.

Game plan is to cast Tymna the Weaver by turn 3 (read: keep a hand with at least three mana available by turn 3, whether that be from rocks or land or dorks) to start digging for tutors and combo pieces. Then either tutor for combo pieces and wincons with regular old instant/sorcery tutors, or cheat Razaketh, the Foulblooded/Rune-Scarred Demon onto the battlefield with Shadowborn Apostle's second ability to tutor that way.

WIN CONDITIONS

PLAN A: FISHBOWL COMBO

Cast Secret Salvage to get every Shadowborn Apostle in the deck in hand (minus the exiled one, of course), then cast them all for free using Edgewalker, having Aetherflux Reservoir on the battlefield. Casting 22 Shadowborn Apostles will net you more than enough life to kill three opponents (assuming each has exactly 40 life) with Aetherflux Reservoir.

It's also possible to make this combo infinite with Cloudstone Curio, bouncing and recasting two Shadowborn Apostles for free with Edgewalker to gain infinite life, infinite storm count, and infinte Aetherflux Reservoir activations. (Note: this version does not require Secret Salvage to fetch all of the Shadowborn Apostles, you just need two).

The Cloudstone Curio combo also works with Bontu's Monument if Aetherflux Reservoir has been removed or isn't available or you draw into Monument first or whatever. However, this is the ONLY (normal) situation in which you'd want Bontu's Monument over Aetherflux Reservoir. Reservoir is more flexible and works with more of the listed combos, so I'd recommend tutoring for it instead of Monument.

In addition, you can get a win off of Thrumming Stone and Aetherflux Reservoir, as rippling into each Apostle works to build up your life total with Aetherflux just like a normal spell.

After looking over this decklist and trying to get rid of cards that were useless outside of a combo context, I had a thought: Did I really need Cloudstone Curio for the Aetherflux Reservoir Plan A combo? According to this article on ChannelFireball, Aetherflux Reservoir behaves according to the function f(N)=(N(N+1))/2, where N is the number of spells cast on a given turn (at sorcery speed; it behaves differently if you can respond to your own spells). If I cast every Shadowborn Apostle in the deck on one turn, that's a total of 276 life gained (assuming that the only spells cast during that turn were 23 Shadowborn Apostles). That's enough life for five Aetherflux Reservoir activations, without factoring in the life total you had before gaining a whole bunch off of it. Because I usually play EDH in pods of three to five people, I concluded that adding Cloudstone Curio wasn't expressly necessary for lethal damage to the whole table; however, I did leave it in to deal with pesky lifegain players, and for redundancy with Secret Salvage.

PLAN B: GO-WIDE

Use either Secret Salvage + Edgewalker or Thrumming Stone to get every Shadowborn Apostle onto the battlefield, then cast Concordant Crossroads and Triumph of the Hordes for a field of (at most) 23 2/2 hasty Shadowborn Apostles. Sidar Kondo of Jamuraa makes them all virtually unblockable, and from there a win just a combat step away.

If Triumph of the Hordes isn't available, Craterhoof Behemoth works as a backup, winning through combat damage instead of poison counters, and while they aren't unblockable, a field of 22/22 tramplers is still probably going to get at least a little damage through. Behemoth can also be cheated in for 1GG with Eldritch Evolution off of Razaketh, the Foulblooded and Rune-Scarred Demon, and vice versa.

IDEAS AND FUTURE STUFF

This deck lives and dies on casting Tymna by turn 3 in order to start digging for combo pieces, so extra card-drawing redundancy for her would be excellent. I'd branch out into blue for Rhystic Study and friends, but that means losing Sidar Kondo of Jamuraa in the command zone, which isn't a good idea, in my opinion. I'm also thinking of adding more protection for Tymna a la Whispersilk Cloak and Darksteel Plate, but slots are very, very limited in this deck, and putting in cards which only work to protect one creature (maybe Razaketh, the Fiend-Blooded as well) seems... parasitic.

* Use Nantuko Shrine as a contingency for the Plan B combo. In case I get board wiped, I can hold a Shadowborn Apostle in hand and cast it post-wipe to get a field full of 22 22/22 Squirrels instead of Shadowborn Apostles. UPDATE- This is way less viable with Coat of Arms removed. I could rework it to work with a free sac outlet and Thrumming Stone to get an exponentially growing field of Squirrels, however. Blasting Station and one of the many creature outlets that get bigger the more things you sac are my two ideas.

Updates Add

CHANGELOG:

  • Removed several cards from maybeboard

  • Updated description

-Removed an old combo idea from the "Other Wincon/Combo Ideas" section

+Added an extra combo involving Thrumming Stone in the "Plan A" section

+Revised the "Plan B" section to work with Craterhoof Behemoth

+Minor style changes

  • Cards Cut:

-Coat of Arms: I've had too many times where my field full of giant Apostles is hampered by not having trample. In addition, casting something as game-warping as that means that I either have to win on that turn or die, so a one-shot effect is more appropriate here.

-1x Shadowborn Apostle: Needed the space, and everything else has earned its slot so far.

  • Cards Added:

+Craterhoof Behemoth: Does what Coat of Arms does but better, and is cheat-tutorable with Eldritch Evolution off of Razaketh, the Fiend-Blooded and Rune-Scarred Demon.

+Bontu's Monument: Provides another infinite combo with Cloudstone Curio and Edgewalker. Also has the silver lining of making hardcasting Razaketh, the Fiend-Blooded slightly easier, and making up for the life loss from Tymna the Weaver's activated ability.
