GW Value Town (Modern Horizons)

Modern* GW (Selesnya) Hatebears Silver Bullet

J-Wid

Sideboard

Hey everybody :D Today I want to show you my GW Midrange list including the new Cards from Modern Horizons. We got a lot of pretty good additions! In the following I will go over every card in the deck and tell you why it is there :D If you look for specific card choices you can just scroll all the way down to the card you are looking for... they gonna be ordered by cmc.

So... to start of I want to go over the landbase really quick. Field of Ruin and Ghost Quarter are just great lands. They kill Inkmoth Nexus , Azcanta, the Sunken Ruin and other lands that trouble you. The Godless Shrine is there for the Plague Engineer in the sideboard. 1 Horizon Canopy in case you are in the position where you flooded and you can just draw a card by sacing it. The rest should be standard.

Allright... lets get to the fun part :D

CMC 0

Walking Ballista - The Walking Ballista is just one of our best cards... trust me. Be it Jund where you can kill Dark Confidant without expending one of your super precious Path to Exile (or killing ticked down Lilianas), be it Humans, where you can kill one of the 1 toughtness creatures. But wait there is more :D We got an amazing new addition in Ranger-Captain of Eos that can tutor it up. That breaks the games... We can play Ranger-Captain of Eos turn 3 and follow it up with a Ballista x=2, ping a creature and have the Ballista left over... That is just disgusting :)

CMC 1

Aether Vial - In Vile we trust :D Everybody who played with the card just knows how good it is...

Giver of Runes - Allright... one of the new additions from Modern Horizon. While it is not Mom herself, she definitly is good. Since a lot of decks play only a handful of removal spells she is gonna be a pain... you will always need two removal spells to kill anything exept Giver, and if you need to swing for leathal you can just give protection of the color of the blocker and swing. The addition of protection from colorless is actually quite relevant since there is a pretty good 3 mana planeswalker... yes i am looking at you Karn Liberated . And his -3 feels really bad if you only get a 1 drop.

Hexdrinker - Allright guys... I am exited about that one :D A mini Progenitus sounds amazing... If this is your topdeck in the lategame... nice... but we can also tutor it up in turn 3 via Ranger-Captain of Eos so our opponent is forced to not tap out in the next turn since we can just play Hexdrinker and give it prot instant. And even if he doesn't tap out we can attack with the captain, sac it and still build our 4/4 prot instant. A great wincon.

Path to Exile - Probably 1 of the best removal spells we have in modern :D

Thraben Inspector - Again a tutorable target for Ranger-Captain of Eos that draws us another card. Seems a pretty low cost to include one for what it can give us.

CMC 2

Eladamri's Call - Allright guys :D Another card from Modern Horizons. So for a green and a white we get to find a creature. That seems not that amazing by itself, but we have a couple ways to get amazing value out of the card. First of all if you have a vial in play... this represents any creature you would like to vial in... is it on 3? Great.. tutor up a Flickerwisp ... is it on 2? allright... let's find the Phyrexian Revoker and forbid whatever you want to do. So.... now talk about value :) Tutor up a Eternal Witness , get back Call, find another one, get back Call, then find a Ranger-Captain of Eos and look for 1 creature with CMC 1 or less. and we talked about the creatures... we do have some good ones :D

Phyrexian Revoker - Your opponent feels like playing a stupid stram lined strategy where he needs to activate an ability? Well.... i guess he is not doing what he wants today :D But even if not there is a good Revoker target in most decks... be it Jund where you can turn of Scavenging Ooze (care! you play it too :D) or any of the Planeswalker, Tron against Ugin, the Spirit Dragon or Oblivion Stone . I am usually really happy to have 1 of them in the main board :D

Scavenging Ooze - It inreacts with graveyards, gains life and gets bigger... Ooze is just a really really good magic card and gives us a good way to ineract with Arclight Phoenix and Dredge decks game 1.

Selfless Spirit - I really value to have a couple of flying bodies to swing in for some chip damage... and there is a pretty good text printed on that one as well.

Thalia, Guardian of Thraben - Behold the Queen.... She just is sooo damn good against a lot of decks that rely on cantrips or other cheap spells... The first strike body is pretty good as well.

CMC 3

Brimaz, King of Oreskos - Hakuna Matata, the lion king is here as well :D He is just a one-man-army. I included one since he is really good against decks that struggle at contesting the board.

Eternal Witness - I talked about the value that Witness + Eladamri's Call can generate... I included a 2 of for the infinite Witness loop :D in case you both only topdeck and you can always have one Witness that returns the dead one so you have an infinite source of 2/1s.

Flickerwisp - Reseting a Planeswalker, keeping the Tron-player away from casting his big-ass stuff, generating value by flickering your own stuff or simply protect your stuff? Well, here you got your solution to all of these problems. And if you can flash the Wisp in via Aether Vial at instant speed it gets stupid how good this card actually is!

Ranger-Captain of Eos - And here is my favourite card from Modern Horizons :) So ther is a 3 mana 3/3 that draws you a creature with CMC 1 or less? Well.... the creatures that he can find are just one drops, right? No! We have the Walking Ballista, Hexdrinker and if we really look for cards we can get the Thraben Inspector to get another card out of the deal. These are all pretty good late game threats/manasinks. The Ranger is good on curve as well as it is an amazing topdeck in the lategame. Let me know what you think.... I love the card.

CMC 4

Restoration Angel - That on is actually more relevant that you think. it is great agains Arclight Phoenix decks since it blocks the Phoenix and it doesn't die to their only removal in Lightning Bolt . In other matchups he is a good flying body that generates us value by flickering on of our creatures and then is able to close the game in a couple of turns.

Okay guys :D thats the main board. Remember that we play 3 copies of Eladamri's Call . So every creature card we bring in from the side board is not really a one-of. So lets get into the sideboard.

Declaration in Stone - A fifth removal spell for the matchups where we really need it. It is amazing against decks like Grixis DeathShadow since they often commit a couple of Shadows to the board and when you get a 2 or even 3 for 1 you shurely gonna win the game. It is actually worse that settle against Arclight Phoenix since you need to take the hit before you can clear them.... but i would still bring it in since it is also good against Thing in the Ice  .

Ethersworn Cononist - Anti Storm, anti Arclight Phoenix , anti Elves... Make your opponent to play fair and do normal things :D

Gaddock Teeg - Pretty damn good against Tron... With a Phyrexian Revoker on Oblivion Stone you got a pretty solid lock :D

Hex Parasite - Once in a while you can use this card to amazing effect. You can kill Planeswalker, you can remove +1/+1 counter from inkmoth nexus against Harden Scales and so on.... additionally it is tutorable by Ranger-Captain of Eos

Kataki, War's Wage - Against any kind of artifact deck :D

Knight of Autumn - Just overall a great and versatile card... Agains Burn, weird Enchantments or just another anti artifact card :D

Melira, Sylvok Outcast - At my local Game Store ther are Infect players around :D so I'll gladly pack one of these :D If you know you not gonna play against Infect you can cut it for another card :D

Mirran Crusader - A card dedicated to all the players that love the Rock (Golgari) or Jund... Get out of here :)

Phyrexian Revoker - 2nd copy whenever it has good targets.

Plague Engineer - Against Humans, Elves and other tribal decks (Sliver probably gonna be a thing with Modewrn Horizons) :D gonna be great!

Rest in Peace - If you get them in I would cut 1 Scavenging Ooze since the card gets a lot worse if ther is a RiP on the Field... and you should definitly cut the 2 Eternal Witness as well :D

Settle the Wreckage - You ganna need this agains Bogles and other creature based strategies that are able to overrun you.
