Description

Brave humans of Innistrad pray to the last uncorrupted angel on their plane, Sigarda!

Summary

I'm super-sure that Humans can be budget and still play efficiently in current meta. It's only the question of environment which they're put in. So what I'm trying to do is to create an environment Humans will play competitive in!

Wincons

This deck has several wincons relying on different cards/combinations.

  1. Humans synergy power
    Use combos like Sigarda, Heron's Grace + Thalia's Lieutenant, 2x Thalia's Lieutenant, make your Thalia's Lieutenant and Tireless Tracker grow permanently. Metallic Mimic is a powerful card that allows you to play your thin Humans already with counter (imagine that Thraben Inspector is played as 2/3 creature and Heron's Grace Champion – as 4/4 creature). Always Watching will make you win faster and easier.
  2. Use your card advantage
    Use Clues to draw cards and have cards advantage. Having several cards more in your hand than your opponent is always nice. Sacrificing Clues additionally triggers Tireless Tracker.
  3. Last resort – Ormendahl, Profane Prince  Flip
    When you feel that game lasts too long and you can lose just transform Westvale Abbey  Flip. If you have Always Watching on the battlefield then this game is most probably yours.

See Cards choice section for detailed cards explanation

Mainboard

Thraben InspectorEasy investigate on ETB. Perfect for T1. 1/2 for
Maulfist Revolutionary3/3 Human with Trample for which is pretty good itself. But he has cut proliferate ability on ETB and when he dies which makes him very valid choice for this deck
Thalia's LieutenantAnother work horse of this deck. Works perfectly with Sigarda, Heron's Grace activated ability
Metallic MimicIMHO this is the top card for each creatures-of-one-type-themed deck! In combination with Thalia's Lieutenant it makes your squishy creatures become a big threat for an opponent
Tireless TrackerProbably the most universal card. Investigate on landfall and put counters on him on Clue sacrifice. Simply all-sufficient
Heron's Grace ChampionCasting him on instant speed at right time can completely change the outcome of the battle giving +1/+1 and lifelink to the rest of the Humans. Is too good not to play
Blossoming DefenseMultipurpose card. Helps to safe your creature from burn spells and removal, deal with tough blocker making your creature survive or just finish your opponent. Buy +2/+2 for one creature for and get hexproof for free!
Heroic InterventionAnother protection card. Helps to safe your creature from burn spells, removal or deathtouch. Hexproof and indestructible for each your permanent on the battlefield just for
Stasis SnareWill help you to defeat dangerous creatures (e.g. flying ones) on instant speed and will clear the road for your Humans to engage. Works against indestructible creatures as well
Declaration in StonePerfect way to get rid even of bunch of tokens or at least several same creatures in one go for just . Works against indestructible creatures as well
Always Watching Another awesome card to let your creatures grow and attack without tapping
Westvale Abbey  FlipAlternative wincon. Is very dangerous after flip (Ormendahl, Profane Prince  Flip). It won't be a big deal for this deck to sacrifice tokens and several little Humans for sake of big and powerful Ormendahl

Sideboard

FragmentizeYou definitely don't want to mess with Panharmonicon, Aetherworks Marvel, opponent's Always Watching or Stensia Masquerade (if you play against Madness Vampires). You can destroy it just for . Works against Vehicles as well – Heart of Kiran and Aethersphere Harvester are your primary targets
Collective EffortEnhanced version of Fragmentize for enchantments that is also able to destroy tough blocker and grow your creatures at the same time. Its escalation cost is just awesome

Need your sidebaord suggestions!

@yung.hanuman – thanks for having a look at my deck!
Tireless Tracker is one of the irreplaceable cards that really can win you a game since it's able:

  • to give you Clues which is potential cards advantage
  • to grow when you sacrifice a Clue which is free additional effect to your card draw

However, if you're definitely looking for smth cheaper I can suggest multiple Humans depending on what you want to achieve

More aggroExpedition Envoy
More Humans synergyHamlet Captain
Hanweir Militia Captain  Flip
Intrepid Provisioner
Sweet bit of controlThalia, Heretic Cathar
Card potentially as strong as Tireless Tracker but without giving card drawsMurasa Ranger
Other creatures that will perform good in this deck and possibly have some sweet additional effectsDuskwatch Recruiter  Flip
Lambholt Pacifist  Flip

Hope it helped and you found what you were looking for :)

@WombaK7S – in Standard?

WombaK7S says... #8

Yes, standard. Is hs too slow for midrange? Seems like a good fit with all the seperate counters being placed.

Just out of curiosity, have you considered adding Ajani Unyielding? I know it's got a high cost, but it does provide card advantage with the +2 ability, has some limited life gain ability, and has a great ultimate. Nissa, Voice of Zendikar and Gideon, Ally of Zendikar would be possible additions if you're thinking of planeswalkers. They all provide possibilities for buffing creatures. Ajani gives the ability to get extra cards.

Just curious about your thoughts on Ajani in this G/W humans deck?

Ive always wondered if Oath of Ajani would be good in a deck like this, its basically a 2 drop Always Watching , I was working on a build and it included that, but considering your 112 upvotes Id say you're the expert, what do you think?

Have you considered Verdurous Gearhulk over Sigarda, Heron's Grace - Yes Sigarda, Heron's Grace has more in the way of deck theme but, Verdurous Gearhulk speeds up the win.

In draw testing your deck I would get washed out by colorless lands, do you really need Blighted Steppe and 2 Westvale Abbey  Flip? (I would just use 3 basic lands in that place of them, keeping 1 abbey).

all in all +1

@BioProfDude

They all are awesome but this deck should be creature-based and budget – that's how I see it. In addition I don't want to spend too much money for card that will rotate in several months (Nissa, Voice of Zendikar and Gideon, Ally of Zendikar).
Ajani Unyielding is way too expensive for this deck. Having drop would mean adding 1-2 more lands

Thanks for your upvote!

@wyatt0781

Oath of Ajani is great for GW tokens decks featuring Nissa, Voice of Zendikar and Gideon, Ally of Zendikar. Since I don't use any planeswalkers I guess Oath would not give me much benefit comparing to Always Watching . It's also worth mentioning that the biggest advantage I'm having from it is vigilance.

Thanks for your upvote!

@Darsul

Not really. Sigarda, Heron's Grace is really helpful since it gives hexproof and generates tokens for blocking. And it's the only flying creature in this deck after all.

Talking about lands I've never had any problem with color distribution IRL. Blighted Steppe saves life sometimes if you use its activated ability at the right time. And Westvale Abbey  Flip is great with Sigarda, Heron's Grace – angel creates tokens that can be painlessly sacrificed to create a demon :) Ormendahl, Profane Prince  Flip is alternative wincon btw

Thanks for your upvote!

Darsul says... #15

see Sigarda isn't your only flyer you have Ormendahl, Profane Prince  Flip 8), I would still cut it down to one of each.

Jacklouse says... #16

I think that your deck would benefit on having atleast two Prowling Serpopard in the sidedeck in case you go against control heavy decks, that combined with the hexproof present on your build will make it really strong against certain matchups.

ACDAMAN says... #17

Have you considered running one or two Long Road Home's to buff Thalia's Lieutenant?

May 7, 2017 8:55 p.m.

Ghosty says... #18

@Jacklouse Prowling Serpopard looks sweet! gonna test it

May 8, 2017 2:19 p.m.

Ghosty says... #19

@ACDAMAN

not really. I don't think I can find a slot for it – still need some place for removal

May 8, 2017 2:21 p.m.

Darsul says... #20

Cut some Blessed Alliance, Heroic Intervention or Blossoming Defense if you wanted to try Long Road Home. I would be very funny to Long Road Home some poor dudes Ormendahl, Profane Prince  Flip lol.

@Darsul nice combo. I only have Thraben Inspector, Metallic Mimic and Thalia's Lieutenant with CMC or less. gotta test it

rodericknoir says... #24

Have you tried any Amonkhet upgrades? I've cut Maulfist, Mimics, a Sigarda, a Dec In Stone, and a Heroic Intervention for Glory Bound Initiates, Gust Walkers, and Channeler Initiates. It's a bit slower, but has been getting the job done. Every game feels grindy though.
