The Big Three Eldrazi Are Titans

(Also known as the Justice League)

So what would we classify the lower eldrazi - the Scions and Spawn? Lesser Titans? No... Teen Titans!

Welcome to TappedOut's first Group Hug Meren of Clan Nel Toth! If you've ever seen any of my decks before, you would know that I am one for creating decks that YOU have never before seen. Without further adieu, here is Group Hug Meren.

Teen Titans refers to two things: first the previously mentioned and above connection that the big three Eldrazi were known as titans, thus the smaller Eldrazi could easily be classified as Teen Titans; secondly, seeing how the Teen Titans would go around helping people, despite consequences, it would only fit for the deck to be Group Hug.

Raven = Meren of Clan Nel Toth
Beast Boy = Scourge of Nel Toth behind Raven/Meren
Robin = Pawn of Ulamog (Batman could be Ulamog)
Starfire = Essence Warden
Cyborg = Matter Reshaper (Not Veteran Explorer... Racists)

This deck plays around the tokens 1/1 Eldrazi Scion and 0/1 Eldrazi Spawn and Meren of Clan Nel Toth to better ramp yourself, and possibly others, so you can maximize the potential of your opponents' decks. Primary focus is ramping and drawing; all else secondary. The hope is that the deck also allows for the other players to ramp and draw as well.

Thank you.

  • The Commander: Meren of Clan Nel Toth
  • Considered the second strongest of all the Experience Commanders, with Ezuri, Claw of Progress taking the lead and Mizzix of the Izmagnus in a steady third. This concept bottlenecks the majority of players into trying to break her as much as possible through conventional means. As you can see, we are not going for this route. This beauty is only here to help combo off with the majority of our creatures, as well as be that "WTF" card that nobody expects to be Group Hug.
  • 25 Group Hug Cards
  • 25 clearly identifiable Group Hug cards make the deck indisputably a group hug deck. 11 card draws, 11 ramp spells, 2 reanimators, Aluren (free castings), and Weird Harvest (tutor). Some of these double in other categories, but each are well recieved from every player.
  • 16 Teen Titans Generators
  • 11 Lesser Eldrazi spitting out all of the Teen Titans (1/1 Eldrazi Scion/0/1 Eldrazi Spawn) with the 4 token doublers: Doubling Season, Panharmonicon, Parallel Lives, and Primal Vigor. We also have the token Minion Reflector to not only double our tokens, but double the amount of fuel we can use for sac outlets.
  • 8 Draw/Recursion
  • The 8 essential cards to make sure the deck runs smoothly. These cards allow us to continue playing the deck without having to resort to topdecking. And thanks to the previous 11 group hug draw cards, we should never have that problem. This breaks down evenly into a nice 4 draw cards and 4 recursion spells.
  • 7 Ramp Spells
  • The primary foundation to kickstart the deck into performing correctly. Once performing correctly, we will be able to draw out the cards needed to maximize each players' deck's potential. I have found that we do run out of lands to ramp for. If this happens, you've thinned out your deck at the maximum of 34 lands. Once again, this allows us to draw the much more needed cards to accentuate the game.
  • 5 Tutors
  • Each of these allows you to search up the needed cards to progress the game in the direction you want it to go. More ramp, draw, tokens, hug, sac outlets, etc? You'll get it with any of these cards.
  • 3 Sac Outlets
  • While the list only depicts 3 Sac Outlets, there is actually 11 (not including Fertilid or Sakura-Tribe Elder). These allow you to maximize your gameplay with not only Meren of Clan Nel Toth, but the various multitude of triggered abilities that result from a creature dying.
  • Essence Warden
  • While I originally didn't have any lifegain in the deck, I have found that through activating cards like Phyrexian Reclamation 10 or so times in a turn actually hurts... a lot. Plus, she allows you to stay in the game long versus aggro and pain decks.
  • Strionic Resonator
  • I've labled it a Staple for a reason. 2 reanimates, or 2 experience counters (in the early game) from Meren of Clan Nel Toth or double any Teen Titans or double card draw from cards like Font of Mythos. It is truly one of the most broken and versatile cards ever printed. Love it.

  • Teen Titans (1/1 Eldrazi Scion/0/1 Eldrazi Spawn) + Sac Outlets:
  • Evolutionary Leap: Use a free dude to draw your next creature for an easy .
  • Perilous Forays: Use a free dude to tutor out a basic land. Cheaper than any ramp spell and you can use another dude to pay for it.
  • Phyrexian Tower: Why get when you can get ? Decent mana fixing.
  • Birthing Pod: For a /another dude and 2 life, instantly search up either Carrion Feeder (Reusable Sac Outlet), Essence Warden (Life Gain, If Needed), Magus of the Vineyard (Ramp Choice 2), or Veteran Explorer (Ramp Choice 1).
  • Skullclamp: For a /another dude, draw 2 cards. Easy as that.
  • Eldritch Evolution: Not reusable like Birthing Pod, but can get up to 2 CMC creatures. Not really worth, but if you have no other choice, it is completely fine.
  • Primal Growth: An Explosive Vegetation but also untapped? Yes please.
  • Aluren + 17 out of 25 creatures:
  • A fairly underused cards for how much potential it has. Only downside is that it is a world enchantment. Seeing as this is a group hug deck, I see no downside here! Works extremely well if you have a sac outlet and a card like Phyrexian Reclamation.
  • Infinite Mana Combo:
  • Deadwood Treefolk/Eternal Witness + Panharmonicon + Sac Outlet + Earthcraft + Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth + Cabal Coffers/Gaea's Cradle/Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx. (I still require the rulings of turning nonbasics into basics)
  • Strionic Resonator + 37 Triggered Abilities:
  • First off, I understand that a solid 5 or so of the triggered abilities counted towards the whole would not be super-worth it, however, if you have nothing else to do, why not go wild? Whether it be 37 or 32, that is still a third of the deck that combos with this card. That means if you don't have something to combo with it, wait another 3 turns to draw one.
  • Minion Reflector + Any of the 25 Creatures:
  • Another fairly underused card due to its lack of versatality and higher CMC cost. What makes it great for us is that the copy is going to die no matter what, in turn that grants an Experience Counter for Meren of Clan Nel Toth. If you have a sac outlet, or something that gains from the doubled token dying, then you get extra fuel there. Not to mention doubling your Teen Titans. This also works with the 4 token doublers: Doubling Season, Panharmonicon, Parallel Lives, and Primal Vigor. For /two dudes you can get up to 16 tokens that are a copy of what you just put down. With Panharmonicon, that triggers Minion Reflector again so for another /2 dudes you can get another 16 copies from that first guy ETB'ing. I would like to point out that if that creature was Brood Monitor, you would have 1584 Teen Titans. Just saying.

I would like to state, for the record, that I truly believe that true Group Hug decks should not have Win Cons. I did not construct this deck to win. I only found out through playing that there were chances and times where I could just outright win. Those means are as follows:

  • Mikokoro, Center of the Sea + Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth + Earthcraft + Maximum of 0 + Maximum of 100 Teen Titans (Still require rulings on turning nonbasics into basics)
  • Concordant Crossroads + Infinite Teen Titans + A Combat Step

  • As you can see, both of those require a physical choice being made to actually win. Otherwise, I could sit back with my 0 mana or infinite Teen Titans waiting for another player to win.

First, let us describe what meta this deck fits in: ANY. GO WILD!

This deck should not win so it doesn't matter what meta you play in. However, note what other commanders and themes you are playing against. You don't want to turn a 15 minute game with a heavy control/taxing deck into a 3 hour game. Unless you're into either masochism or sadism. Which is fine by me. Just leave me out.

This deck was created to prove to my friends that I could make a Golgari () deck group hug. That and prove Meren of Clan Nel Toth wasn't always just a bitc---. That being said, this allows you to sit back and just enjoy. You get to watch everyone play their entire hand and draw an entire new one each turn.

  • Strengths: 2~ish
  • Always Active: You're always active and doing something that affects something, big or small.
  • Easy Ramp: Thanks to the Teen Titans (1/1 Eldrazi Scion/0/1 Eldrazi Spawn) and the multitude of ramp spells, you always have enough mana.

  • Weaknesses: 3~ish
  • Hugging the Wrong People: Control and stax decks can make games last several times longer than ever intended.
  • Meren of Clan Nel Toth: If you don't express that you are a Group Hug deck, you will be targeted and destroyed with extreme prejudice.
  • Overwhelming: As early as turn 3, you could turn from your 10 second turns into 3-10 minute turns dealing with crazy amounts of triggers, managing, and planning.
  • What is the goal of the deck?

Simply hug as many people as possible. Don't even ask permission. Be that creepy, weird guy that nobody is sure of.

However, mechanically speaking, all you have to do is play your hand. Play spells in the order that I've ranked: Meren of Clan Nel Toth, Ramp, Draw, Teen Titans, Repeat - Skip processes as needed.

Does the goal of the deck change based on the matchup?

Uh... no? The only reason there would be a need for a change is if your opponents are playing dick decks that consistently wipe/slow/control the board. At the time, I recommend bringing out your T1 deck, kicking their butt with it, and then return to having fun.

What to look for in a mulligan

2 Lands Minimum. 1 if you have Sol Ring and/or like cards. Otherwise, keep any hand that doesn't have 4+ Lands, 3+ 5CMC cards, or anything basically commen sense-wise. This is a beginner friendly deck.

    Contigency Plans?

JUST KEEP HUGGING. JUST KEEP HUGGING. JUST KEEP HUGGING, HUGGING, HUGGING. WHAT DO WE DO? WE HUG.

Extremely Unique Decks Created Never Before

America, Land(less) of the Free [Creatureless Too]

    Upvote Landless EDH
Take a walk on the wild side of Magic where you play a game without any lands or creatures! This 100% playable deck is purely built to win. Finely tuned to the point where with a number of various of "God-Hands" could allow this deck to win not only on an average of Turn 4, but can win on Turn 1!

Samurai Jack (Equipment Voltron Kataki, War's Wage)

    Upvote Equipment Voltron Kataki
Insanity! Madness, I say! You can't possibly run Kataki, War's Wage as an Equipment Voltron commander! But yes, you can. The anti-synergy is its own synergy in itself. A mono-white deck producing large amounts of mana, attaching equipment, swinging for the kill, and apologizing every upkeep. This derpy deck allows you to become the pity party of one until your pod doesn't know it's too late for them when you bash them in the face. And do be sure to apologize.

    The Sliver Conspiracy

    Upvote Slivers
Oh deity, not another Sliver Overlord deck! BUT WAIT! There's more! If anyone in your playgroup pulls out slivers, everyone lets out a deep sigh and becomes debateably irrational towards the Slivers player. But no! Once you proudly shine forth Sliver Overlord, savor their sighs and exclaim how the deck only runs 1 Sliver outside the commander. However, thanks to Conspiracy, every creature is a Sliver! But you're opponents don't know that. This deck is a 5-Color Goodstuff Toolbox; tutoring until it wins.

    Religious Conspiracy (A Satire)

    Upvote Satire
A Christian, Muslim, Morman, Catholic, and Shirei, Shizo's Caretaker walk into a bar. Now for bad jokes aside, this deck plays with all the previously mentioned religions and how much they resemble mono-black cards.

The following may trigger you if you are weak-willed and/or can't understand the humor of a joke.

Hello you crazy people's who strain their eyes to read my deck description! If you're reading this, and continue to do so, I am going to talk to you about my decks and how I come up with my ideas.

I have one main goal as a Magic player: Create a deck never before seen... and make it the best.
Theorycrafting decks, using old/strange mechanics, cards, or combos, and seeing the looks on my opponents' faces when they see my crazy decks is how I enjoy the game. Sure I love winning, but I also love losing spectacularly. I'll never netdeck, but I might use other decks as inspiration. Although, I will borrow decks from friends and do my best to figure out what it does and see it in action.
So, how do I come up with my ideas? Honestly I just look through either my collection, stores, or websites like TappedOut and notice cards, combos, and the like that are interesting, but only that. A combo a few people have tried, in another format and had little to no success with it and then I do my best to perfect it in EDH. I see cards like Conspiracy, Charmed Pendant, Varchild's War-Riders, and so many more and I can't help but feel inspired to do my best to break it.

So I welcome you to my decks. Comment on them, upvote 'em, copy them, steal them, or even buy them and play 'em yourselves. All I wish to do is shine an alternative light on ideas that have already seem to be set in stone and show that it's still earth and we can mold it to be anything we want it to be.
