Grixis Discard EDH v1-3 [OC]

Commander / EDH Aggro Budget Discard UBR (Grixis)

muse99

Current setup of my Crosis, the Purger EDH deck.

Deck has a strong focus on discard and disruption. Also has a minor reanimator subtheme to take advantage of all those discarded cards.

The deck is meant to be played aggressively, with little regard for one's own safety. As such, there is a distinct lack of 'classic' control elements. Crosis himself tends to attract a lot of hate, so there are some effects to grant protection/evasion. Depending on the circumstances, can be played with a straight-up aggro strategy. Alternatively, it can grind out the win using cards such as Wheel of Torture or Skullcage .

Notable exclusions

Megrim and Liliana's Caress. If you play with this deck, you will discover that mid-to-late game, as opponent's hands dwindle (not just from discard), the relative value of these cards decreases, whereas early game it's almost always preferable to play more ramp or put down direct threats.

Of course, there are ways to ensure these cards (and their draw-oriented buddy Underworld Dreams) retain their value, mostly with 'wheel effects' such as Wheel of Fortune and Incendiary Command, but this would push the deck further to combo-style gameplay which really does not synergize all that well with aggro-disruption.

Crosis vs. Nicol Bolas

Reserved for an in-depth analysis. In short the generals are interchangeable and either of them can be used. There is advantages and disadvantages to running either of them and the decision is dependent on the meta and on your personal preferences. Someone claiming one is hands-down better than the other is oversimplifying things for the sake of rationalization.

Possible acquisitions

  • Sheoldred, Whispering One and Mikaeus, the Unhallowed are two more creatures I would like to add. Sheoldred provides recursion, keeps the pressure on opponents and is incidentally a good way to remove those pesky chump blockers. Mikaeus has a good fit in with the deck with his intimidate and as the deck runs almost no humans he should provide quite a bit of card advantage.

  • Phyrexian Arena. More card draw at the cost of life is good.

  • Massacre Wurm hoses token decks and can finish the game with a well-timed Decree of Pain. Incidentally it can also serve as sweeper protection.

  • Abyssal Nocturnus. I desperately want to test this guy out to see if I can use him as a surprise finisher.
