Grixis Demons (Commander Tribal Challenge)

Commander / EDH Demons Tribal UBR (Grixis)

Hey, so a guy in one of the Commander Facebook groups proposed a deckbuilding challenge for Commander, which is to build a tribal Commander deck. Sounds easy, right? Not necessarily. He wasn't OK with just any tribal deck, he wanted to make sure that the decks were some of the lesser appreciated tribes. Here are the rules for the Commander Tribal Challenge:

  • Your commander must be the creature type that matches your tribe of choice.
  • Your deck must have at least 27 creatures whose types match your tribe of choice.
  • Any creatures above the 27 required creatures of your type must either provide synergy with your tribe of choice or refer to your tribe of choice in a friendly manner.
  • The following tribes are banned: Zombies, Slivers, Allies, Elementals, Clerics, Goblins, Vampires, Eldrazi, Merfolk, Elves, Wizards, Angels, Soldiers, Dragons, Humans, Spirits, Rats
  • The following cards are banned: Coat of Arms, Cryptic Gateway, Peer Pressure, Stoneforge Masterwork, Tsabo's Decree, Extinction, any creature card with "When (name) enters the battlefield, choose a creature type."
  • Changelings or cards with all creature types do not count towards your 27 for your tribe.

At first glance, it may seem like all the powerful or fun tribes are gone, right? Not even close. Among the available choices to you are Hydras, Avatars, Giants, Dwarves, Clerics, Shamans, Druids, and Treefolk. I chose, however, to leave all of these alone and go with Demons. My reasoning is simple: Demons are a powerful tribe that, although they start out slowly, can really take over a game in very short manner. This is due to many Demons being high-powered creatures with equally high-powered abilities. Now, one would think that a good Demon deck would have to have a Rakdos commander, right? Wrong, there is one legendary Grixis demon: Sol'kanar the Swamp King . The ability to run blue spells in the deck allows me to play a couple counter spells in case my opponents attempt to gain momentum while I am in the process of establishing a board state, while I still have access to all the good removal spells in black if need be.

Feel free to provide feedback as to how I can improve this deck, and try out this challenge for yourself if you want! There's multiple free MTG simulators that allow you to brew and play decks like this without spending hundreds of dollars on cards (my preferred simulator is XMage because it's automated like MTGO but is more visually appealing than MTGO).
