First Time Spellslinger looking for help

Our playgroup generally frowns on combo and I personally dont care for tutors (IN EDH). What are my options here ? Will a Spellslinger deck work on a world full of creatures withoight combo FTW ?

We have started a league system and combo would net me -2 points just for the attempt, and another for killing everyone at the same time. So, where it would be possible for me to build and assemble, I dont want to ruin everyone else at the tables fun because by saying atleast I wont get points.

I really like our playgroup, but want to change things up to get more games in. We dont meet terribly often so I see the appeal in not running combo if youve tuned your deck for a few weeks only to have the game be over by turn 5, But at the same time - its not fun being stuck in only one game for 2+ hours and then not playing again for another ~2-3 weeks
