A control deck, focused on controlling the field until I can drop Bolas and render the opponent's board pretty much unplayable.
I'd appreciate feedback.
Seeing as you have more Gem of Becoming in the deck than targets for them, I would suggest knocking them down to 2 or removing them out right. Thought Scour would be a viable replacement. Probably would be a good idea to work in some Sulfur Falls . Other than that, not bad. +1
I tried a similar strategy, and found that playing only to Bolas really isn't enough, especially when your only mana ramp is Gem of Becoming. If I were you, I'd get rid of the slumbering dragons, sideboard the nighthawks, get rid of killing wave (i would use either slagstorm or blasphemous act instead) and get some more late game cards, like Karn Liberated or Griselbrand. Also Gilded Lotus is much better ramp than the Gem of Becoming. But I like the idea of Grixis Control right now, it's not something a lot of people are doing. k so you know you want bolas every game so maybe bump him to 4 and drop talrand to 3 and see how that works. i think that with essence scatters in your main board along with murder and searing spear you have plenty of spot removal for the creature decks, so i would have kept killing wave at 4. devils play will either target a single creature or player and and is not as good late game as killing wave is. also vampire night hawk, hes basically more spot removal in a way.it might just be me but guilded lotus and vessel of endless rest just seem too slow/ late game for this deck. late game your gonna want to be controlling the board to get your bolas out, not ramping to get him out. I think the 4 gems of becoming work better since its a turn 3/4 thing and not a turn 5 thing thats keeping you from countering the big creature your opponent just summoned. and shocklands are confirmed now so add some of those in!
for the land base i woul go to 3 of everything you have now and cut the evolving wilds for 3 shocklands, one of every color combo you have and adding on more of each a mountain and an island.
Talrand could be something better, maybe Griselbrand ? lol
If you are set on having a big burn, I would trade your Volcanic Geyser for card:Devil's Play. Izzet Charm is coming out which opens up a lot of options. You can replace your Syncopate with it it to counter noncreature spells, or if they do lay a creature that happens to have 2 toughness, you can just kill it. There is also Rakdos Charm but I don't think it'll fit your theme too well.
Know with the setup you have now, you are going to have slow starts. The dual lands that come into play tapped unless you have etc are great but 3 swamps and islands, and 2 mountains they are most likely going to be coming into play tapped a lot (hence the Evolving Wilds , I know, but that can cost you turn #1. Fortunately for you, you don't really have much you can play on turn 1#1.).
Talrand is decent for caster decks, but it can be slow to revup. Turn 4 to cast, turn 5 to create spawns, and finally turn 6 to attack. However, he can supply you with fodder for sacrificing. For instance, you could take Infernal Plunge and sacrifice one of the tokens from Talrand. This would leave you with the 3 red mana in your mana pool AND also trigger Talrand again. So, basically, you are cutting out the sacrifice and paying 1R for 3R meaning you just got 2R for free.
I understand there is a certain cool factor with having as many planeswalkers as you do but I don't think you need all of them. If your goal is to just control until you get Nicol Bolas out, I'd drop the Chandras. Jace and Chandra come out at the same time and Jace will give you more control.
You don't really have any early game creature defense as well, but perhaps you are not worried about it. Still, coming out in RTR is Nivmagus Elemental and for cards that do not have Flashback, you could easily exile them instead and get this guy two counters. Even if not, it's 1/1 for 1 that can protect you early own.
Also coming out in the theme of Nicol Bolas is card:Rakdos's Return. It has potential to be great but even if they have just two cards in their hand it is enough to hurt and stall them.
Don't bother with Goblin Electromancer as you don't have enough sorcery and instant cards for it to effect. As a sideboard recommendation against tokens and weenie decks, I'd go with Izzet Staticaster .
