FNM! —March 2, 2013

Comments cleared again.

Went to my first ever FNM yesterday and I'm very pleased how the deck performed. I went 1-1-1, 0-2, 2-0, 2-0, 2-0 and finished 5 out of 20. I noticed that Naya was hard for me to deal with. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to deal with Naya aggro? (Boros Reckoner, Thragtusk, Restoration Angel and so on)

Also Changed up mainboard and sideboard slightly, put 2x Altar's Reap in the mainboard for now to see how they perform, and they got swapped in for 2x Duress that went to the sideboard (Duress performed extremely well in this FNM). My Vampire Nighthawks got the boot in favor of another Tormod's Crypt and a Duskmantle Seer that i side in place of Mikaeus, the Unhallowed versus deck that run big expensive creatures, or wipes like Blasphemous Act and he works really well!

All in all, i am very happy to get fifth place, i had alot of fun and got an idea of what the decks weakness is. Walked home with a High Priest of Penance (boosters were kinda shit).

Hello there!Nice deck you got there "Stillabris" Might have trouble facing something like a Simic Merfolk (jk)

the single crypt in the sideboard looks a bit odd to me.

keep it up!

Take out 2 dire graf ghouls for the thrulls only run 2 and mainboard night hawks and at least 1 evil twin I like 2 evil twins and 1 less captain if you really want to hit killing wave for game sooner. I know sometimes copying a blood artist with evil twin seems like overpaying but not when killing wave is in the mix.

Also you may want to carry Jace, memory adept x2 Wight of presicnt six x4 and mind sculpt x4 and consumming aberration x2 in your SB so you can switch to mill and kill game 2. The swaps are messenger/mikaous for Jaces and Wights for Blood artists and Consuming aberration for grim grin and mind sculp for tragic slip unless opponent is playing indestructables and they are nesessary. Your opponent is never going to be able to adjust to a totally new playstyle 1 game later.

Sorry 2 of the killing waves would become mind sculpt in swap and keep two slips or ult price whatever you want in those 2 removal slots.

How are the splinters working? I personally would want to run a more reliable removal spell at instant speed. While is does provide a sac outlet, it doesn't provide a bonus for sacking, and sacking is really most powerful at instant speed(i.e sacking targets and chump blocks vs reckoner). Victim of night seems pretty powerful in the current meta and is only really bad against jund midrange (and possibly control).

I am running a quite similar deck (Thrull Parasite was a great idea!). I think fusethegreat is right that the strength of the deck is acting at instant speed, so the 4 Duress and 2 Bone Splinters make it only less flexible. I replaced the Diregraf Ghoul with 2 Black Cat and 1 additional Thrull Parasite and the following instants/ sorceries:

  • 2x card:Altar's Reap (sac engine, save Gravecrawler from exile)
  • 1x Dimir Charm (against control: counter or draw, perhaps you can even discard a Gravecrawler :); against aggro: destroy)
  • 1x Gravepurge (instant, so use it at the end of your oppenent turn; if you don't want creatures but only any card, just select no creatures :) )
  • 4x Tragic Slip
  • 1x Ultimate Price
  • 1x Victim of Night
  • 2x Duress (great in this deck, but no instant speed, perhaps sideboard only?)
  • 2x Killing Wave (awesome even with X=0)

Even though i agree with that it sucks Bone Splinters isn't an instant, it's still really good, and have been working amazingly for me. card:Altar's Reap is a card i really like and i might try running because i love that you can save creatures from exile with it, and draw is always nice. 2x Duress might end up being 2x card:Altar's Reap actually...

Rooftop Storm + Gravecrawler + Grimgrin, Corpse-Born makes me happy in the pants. Hard to pull off in standard(phrasing), but if it went off it would be epic(also phrasing).

I like the deck, I am getting together a Zombie mill deck but I think I might side board some of these cards to present a different look on a second game. Do you find you are able to get Mikaeus out often enough to make a difference. That is one of the few I dont have and I'm just wondering with his mana cost and only having a single in the deck.

February 26, 2013 4:57 a.m.

Stillabris says... #19

He is actually really good, and six mana is not impossible in a longer game. He'll fix a stalemate because of intimidate, also all your nonhumans get +1/+1 and undying which is amazing.

Okay so now to find one lol. My local shop doesnt have any singles from the last 3 or 4 releases so its only trades or ebay for those sets. Zombies ate my Cards is my U/B zombie mill deck if you want to take a look. And thanks +1

I really think Dimir Charm should find a home in here; Duress is more of a sideboard card in my opinion. Just think of setting some Gravecrawler in your graveyard while also getting the card you need that might be three turns away. Also is a great kill spell.

awkwardraisin says... #22

Tried Consuming Aberration? Not strictly a zombie, but has great synergy with Gravecrawler cus crawler is cast from the graveyard.

The deck isn't milling so I'll actually say something slightly more useful, Artful Dodge. Grimgrin getting all those counters is all well and good, but having artful dodge to quickly seal a game is spectacular. Hopefully no one will see it coming.
