The Lives and Deaths of Skullbriar

Utilizing Skullbriar's unique ability to maintain +1/+1 counters in the graveyard and command zone, this deck is built around putting +1/+1 coutners on creatures as well as leveraging enormous creatures for effects.

Making Skullbriar Big

• Hardened Scales/Winding Constrictor/Doubling Season/Corpsejack Menace all increase the number of +1/+1 counters being placed on Skullbriar.
• Blade of the Bloodchief/Ivy Lane Denizen/Necropolis Regent/ Ring of Xathrid /Vigor/Unspeakable Symbol/Mazirek, Kraul Death Priest/Kalonian Hydra/Varolz, the Scar-Striped all help add +1/+1 counters to Skullbriar.

Killing Skullbriar

• Momentous Fall/ Life's Legacy /Disciple of Bolas/Greater Good draw you a ton of cards when you have a big Skullbriar to sacrifice.
• Rishkar's Expertise/Soul's Majesty draw the cards without having to sacrifice Skullbriar.
• Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord let's you fling an enormous Skullbriar to wipe out several opponents.
• Death's Presence/ Reyhan, Last of the Abzan allow you to copy Skullbriar's +1/+1 counters on death, effectively keeping them in play.
• Feed the Pack gives you the option to turn an enormous Skullbriar into an army of wolves. Then, for added effect, sacrifice the wolves while Death's Presence is in play to add twice as many +1/+1 counters to Skullbriar once he's back in play.

Swinging with Skullbriar

• Loxodon Warhammer/Tuskguard Captain/Brawn/Champion of Lambholt/Trailblazer's Boots help Skullbriar avoid chumpblocks once he's huge.
• Ordeal of Nylea /Sword of the Animist add nice bonuses for attacking, since it will generally be easy to swing with Skullbriar when he's the biggest guy on the battlefield.

Backup Skullbriars

• Forgotten Ancient/Managorger Hydra/Scavenging Ooze/Yahenni, Undying Partisan are stand-ins for Skullbriar in case he's been negated somehow.
• Bloodflow Connoisseur helps prevent Skullbriar from getting bounced to hand or Black Sun'd into oblivion by providing an instant-speed sac outlet, while also being a stand-in +1/+1 counter stacking creature.

Playing With Skullbriar

Skullbriar is a fast combat commander that can stack on damage very quickly. His extremely low cast coupled with his haste and permanent +1/+1 counters make him a less-than-ideal target for spot removal, meaning he often goes unanswered for quite a while. The versatility of being able to turn him into an enormous amount of draw power or an army of wolves, all while being a hasting attacker next turn when you recast him, give this deck a lot of versatility. Even when he feels like the game has slipped away from Skullbrair, the host of stand-ins can step up and close out games with surprising efficiency.
