Standard Tournament Results —Sept. 28, 2012

A very late update...

I used this deck a couple of weeks back for a local Standard Tournament and it worked pretty well. All in all I went 1-1-1, but I am still pretty satisfied.

First match up:

G Pump-Infect 1-2

This deck won all its match-ups in the previous tournament and won the whole thing so the first match up went as expected, a quick death. I drew a few too many high-cost cards and didn't get off to my usual start. I was summarily killed off by an Inkmoth Nexus with Titanic Growth on turn three or four. Second game I got out all my main creatures in nearly perfect order and Searing Speared her Inkmoth Nexus. 2x Kruin Striker with 4-1 trample ensured my victory on turn five or six. Third game I had her down to 3 life after a decent start, but my creatures kept dying and hers didn't due to cards such as [[Titanic Growth] and Rancor. This gave her the victory eventually around turn eight or nine. Still, my deck was the only one to score a win against her in the last two tournaments so I was satisfied that I put up a good fight.

Second match up:

B/R Vampire Life-gain 2-0

First round was a perfect kill. Champion of the Parish -> Kruin Striker -> Thatcher Revolt -> Goldnight Commander -> Increasing Devotion. He drew no mountains, so that was unfortunate for him. Second round went more or less the same only that he pulled a decent hand and played two Vampire Nighthawks in a row on turn three and four, which I quickly Oblivion Ringed on my turn three and four. Death by a Goldnight Commander-boosted War Falcon and Kruin Striker.

We then played a friendly game next in which he initially gained a lot of life until I played Increasing Devotion on turn six. My creatures took 32 of his 38 life then and there and killed all but one of his creatures. Next turn I finished him off with 122 damage due to Goldnight Commander and Increasing Devotion's flashback.

Third match up:

B/G/R Cerrrazy Monster Ramp with Tokens 0-2

This was weird. I don't know what this guy did, but he did it well. His deck consisted of a mix of Abundant Growth, ramp and ugly creatures such as Huntmaster of the Fells  Flip, Olivia Voldaren, Thragtusk and Grave Titan. Wtf?! First round I Oblivion Ringed and I Searing Speared for all I was worth but he out-tokened me with Huntmaster of the Fells  Flip and Thragtusk. Second game after doing much the same he got Olivia Voldaren out and paid to bite my entire army to pieces. It was a total loss.

Still, I was somewhat expecting to do worse (there's a pretty high level where I play) so I was reasonably pleased with the overall result. Just too bad I lost the last game to such a fruity, but obviously powerful, deck. :p

There are primarily two things which I am uncertain about: 1) Do I really want to call this deck Massive Strike, as in Massive Kruin Striker? And; 2) Do I add Battle Hymn in order to pay for Increasing Devotion and its flashback cost.

Thank you for your help.

Good suggestions! I just kind of made this deck off the top of my head and didn't even consider the two..

@wickedeye: Thatcher Revolt could definitely be an option. I was thinking about adding a couple more token cards just to capitalize on the synergy of this deck, but for some reason I could only think of Lingering Souls . Thanks for the tip!

@bsniper1: Didn't think about Odric, Master Tactician at all either, what's gotten into me? He would also be very good in this deck, so I'll see what I can do. I might test Mikaeus, the Lunarch first just because I have two of him and only one Odric, Master Tactician . He's got pretty good stats and would give me an additional edge, that's for sure. Thanks! ;)

I don't think really think Timely Reinforcements is worth it since I will probably always be the one with most creatures on the boards. I'd rather use Thatcher Revolt in this case. :)

I feel there are still a few kinks to this deck. I know that I will keep Champion of the Parish , Goldnight Commander , Kessig Malcontents and Kruin Striker , as these are my core creatures. But I am fiddling around with the idea of adding Thraben Doomsayer in place of Mentor of the Meek and Odric, Master Tactician instead of Zealous Conscripts and/or Mikaeus, the Lunarch . This would make sense in a way, but I still need some convincing. Additionally I might just ditch some control spells as well and go all-out stupid with token spells.

Any thoughts?

Hmm i like to play odric if im one or 2 creatures short of using his abillity and then use zealous conscripts next turn to catch my opponent off guard if that helps? im gonna collect some cards i need and update you on my deck as your goldnight commander has inspired me :p

You know, the deck looks really good once I put in what you both suggested. The only thing I'm going to lament is the lack of card draw and control, but that might not even matter. Vigilante Justice works well enough as creature removal anyway.

Thanks guys, I think you just saved me a lot of time. :D

Here's my current List:

Creature:4x Champion of the Parish4x Doomed Traveler4x Goldnight Commander4x Kessig Malcontents4x Kruin Striker2x Odric, Master Tactician

Enchantment:3x Vigilante Justice

Planeswalker:2x Ajani, Caller of the Pride

Sorcery:1x Bonfire of the Damned4x Gather the Townsfolk2x Increasing Devotion4x Thatcher Revolt

Land:3x Cavern of Souls4x Clifftop Retreat6x Mountain9x Plains

Sideboard:3x Oblivion Ring3x Divine Offering3x Celestial Purge2x Norn's Annex2x Thalia, Guardian of Thraben2x Grafdigger's Cage

For maindeck I added:+1 Vigilante Justice and Goldnight Commander, they both win games. +2 Ajani, he beefs up your guys or adds tokens for Goldnight Commander.+4 Doomed Traveler, he's a must.

For sideboard I added:+2 Thalia for those spell-heavy opponents (Delver decks)+2 Grafdigger's Cage for zombie decks+2 Norn's Annex for aggro decks (GW Elves, Goblins, Humans, etc)

I feel like I'm forgetting to add something to this deck, but I really like it so far.

Yeah, I know... It's pretty nice. :)

I often have 6-7 5/5 (+) creatures by turn six, possibly by turn five if Battle Hymn hits just right. Ten 10/10 (+) by turn seven. Not unusual for Crusader of Odric to be 12+ by the end of the game, if they entered the field.

The deck packs a huge punch, that's for sure. I just need to make it a little more consistent, which is why I'm testing Mentor of the Meek and Battle Hymn (the latter being awesome for playing Increasing Devotion and its flashback). Additionally, I think I've decided that Vigilante Justice isn't worth it despite it having won me a few games. The reason for this is because it competes for the 4 drop slot with Goldnight Commander and I want to get him out as soon as possible.

At the moment I'm trying to get 6-7 creatures out at 5/5 or above by turn five, and get it consistently(!). Thinking about running a test of Infernal Plunge next. With it I may be able to shorten the steps:

  • Turn 1: Land, Gather the Townsfolk /Kruin Striker
  • Turn 3: Land, Mentor of the Meek - Infernal Plunge ?
  • Turn 4: Land, Goldnight Commander - Infernal Plunge /Battle Hymn ?
  • Turn 5: Land, Increasing Devotion - Infernal Plunge /Battle Hymn ?
  • If I hit it right I can get Mentor of the Meek out on turn two and increase my card draw, or get Goldnight Commander and Increasing Devotion out one or two turns earlier, giving me a huge advantage. I have to check and see if it's doable.

Yeah after many play tests I'm thinking about taking out Vigilante Justice, it's just too slow.

What are your thoughts on Stormblood Berserker? I know it competes for the 2 mana slot, but I think it's really good, especially when it can only be blocked by two or more creatures.

Also, red does offer some really good card draw options. Ever consider Faithless Looting?

you may want this card:Slayers' Stronghold but it's magic will appear on mid game..

it allows you to have a 1 creature blocker.. it may not hurt you to have 1 :D

I had a couple in the deck not too long ago, but I guess I forgot to add them again after I'd been fiddling with it. Thanks for the reminder. :)
