Goblin Red / Black $30 Budget Affordable (Modern)

Modern* Aggro BR (Rakdos) Goblins Tribal

Muckduck

Affordable black + red goblin deck. Designed to be fun to play, with good variety of cards, with a very low budget.

Strategy

Like most Goblin decks, build a strong army quickly, with lots of cheap goblins that either boost each other or are able to get in for early damage. Then, several ways to finish out the game as other decks are just getting set up: direct damage from Spikeshot Elder, equip Stoneforge Masterworks to a goblin with fear, menace, trample etc, Krenko can quickly create a giant horde in 1 or 2 turns, direct damage and removal in one from Fodder Launch.

Drawing 1 or 2 Frogtosser Bannerets early feels great, you can dump everything in your hand by turn 4 pretty reliably and have an overpowering army. Wort, Boggart Auntie will help with steady reinforcements if needed.

Budget = around $30

Target budget for the deck is around a very affordable $30. The goal is to mostly use cards under $1 each unless where absolutely necessary. Any cards over about $5 each aren't considered at all.

Cards that are too expensive for this budget deck, but would be included if money was not factored:

  • Top tier R/B land (too expensive for this deck): Bloodstained Mire, Blood Crypt

  • Auntie's Hovel ($1.50 ea, would have 4)

  • Goblin Chieftain (would have 2-3)

  • Goblin King (would have 2-3)

  • Krenko Mob Boss (would have 2)

  • Legion Loyalist (would have 2)

Sideboard Considerations

Considerations for a sideboard, optional if you want to stick to the cheapest budget possible, though cards listed here are all very affordable too.

  • Abrade, Shatterstorm (vs artifact heavy decks)

  • Reforge the Soul (if opponent's deck is able to drag out games this gives you another giant wave)

  • Lightning Bolt

  • Pithing Needle, Sowing Salt (affordable and shut down many combos or key cards)

  • Deathmark (creature removal vs white/green only)

  • Profane Command (another way to finish games if struggling and very versatile)

  • Rain of Gore (vs life gain)

  • Terminate (another creature removal option)

  • Bojuka Bog (shut down various graveyard decks)

Combos / Interactions

  • Spikeshot elder direct damage is big late game (after boosting his power with Stoneforge Masterworks and goblin lords)

  • Wort, Boggart Auntie can bring back nearly everything in the deck (including most instants/sorceries)

  • Frogtosser Banneret lower the cost of nearly everything in the deck (including most instants/sorceries)

Notes:

  • 2.0 Plans: Removed Goblin Warchief (not modern legal), remove 1-2 spikeshot elder, remove tuktuk scrapper

  • V2.1: Lowered overall mana curve costs, removed some aspects that slowed things down like equipment. Now 4 Frogtossers to really speed up emptying your hand early. Now 2x Reforge the Soul for more reliable reinforcements if the first wave fails.

  • v2.3: Budgeted for 1 goblin king (about 1.50) and now 4x mogg war marshal (.50 ea)

  • V2.4: nameless inversion and harbringer added. adds nice synergy and options cheaply, with all the goblin spells (both creature and tribal goblin spells) you'll be able to pick from many cards, which will be even cheaper from frogtosser, and can be returned to your hand with Wort, Boggart Auntie.

  • V2.5: significant change: reduced deck cost while focusing on lowering the mana curve and speed. Removed several cards that tended to sit in the hand unused due to cost or being a bit too situational. Focusing on dumping out goblins as early as possible now, minimizing any slow starts.
