Goblin Boss-An In-Depth Guide to all things Goblin

Commander / EDH* Aggro Competitive Goblins Mono-Red Tokens Tribal

whynothaveboth13

Commander deck focused around Goblin synergy to rush down your opponents with enough survivability to stay a decent threat. This is my attempt at making a strong goblin deck using a few outside resources as references and adding a splash of my own creativity. Following will be (as the name of the deck suggests), and in-depth guide explaining the deck:

PREMISE-

This deck aims to get Krenko, Mob Boss on the field as quickly as possible to start developing the board and become an immediate threat before your opponents have a chance to get their combos and threats off. Almost every card in this deck either synergizes with him or looks to give him haste so he can start popping off ASAP.

MANA-

I have a few ways in the deck to ramp up mana to start having some pretty insane turns. Cards like Ancient Tomb, Sol Ring, and Mana Vault can up your mana even without tokens. Treasure Nabber also helps in using your opponents' mana rocks against them. Once you have tokens start to hit the board, Skirk Prospector, Mana Echoes, Ashnod's Altar, Phyrexian Altar, and Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx all look to capitalize on your board state, flood you with mana, and let you pull off some insane combos. Infinite damage or token combos include: Umbral Mantle + Phyrexian Altar OR Ashnod's Altar OR Skirk Prospector + Krenko, Mob Boss for infinite mana and tokens. Thornbite Staff + Lightning Crafter OR Goblin Sharpshooter for infinite damage. Mana Echoes + Sword of the Paruns + Krenko, Mob Boss is another way for infinite mana and tokens. Mix and match these with cards like Boggart Shenanigans and throw in Krenko, Mob Boss or Mana Echoes and you'll find plenty of ways to get infinite damage, mana, and tokens.

CARD DRAW-

This deck is pretty aggressive and you can even find yourself either without the cards you need or not having cards at all. Cards like Skullclamp, Vanquisher's Banner, The Immortal Sun, Scroll Rack, and Sensei's Divining Top all look to draw additional cards and seek out what kind of cards are coming up and to adapt your strategies. This is an important reason why Madblind Mountain is in this deck. Have these artifacts on the field but not liking what's coming up? Just shuffle it! Another way to play additional cards is using Dark-Dweller Oracle, should you have the mana. A great way to stack your deck just the way you want it is with Goblin Recruiter. He's the MVP of the deck besides Krenko, Mob Boss or Grenzo, Havoc Raiser. Just stack your deck with whatever goblins you need for the current situation. A nice combo with him is to have Goblin Ringleader on top and fill your hand with goblins. This is the card you will almost always be looking for to set up certain combos. Which is a nice segway into our next section.

TUTOR-

The best part of any good EDH deck is having ways to look for certain cards in just the right situations. As a creature- and token-centric deck, we have just the right pool to get us what we need in most cases. These cards are Imperial Recruiter, Goblin Matron, Moggcatcher, and Gamble. We also have a few ways to cheat goblin cards from our hand with cards like Goblin Wizard, Goblin Lackey, and Warren Instigator. These are great turn one plays or if you've just filled up your hand with the Goblin Recruiter / Goblin Ringleader combo. These goblin synergies are super important as there are 32 creatures in this deck, 28 of which are goblins. That's why so many of our cards do well only if we have a decent board state. Which brings me to my next point.

SYNERGIES-

Goblins are the bread and butter of this deck, and with many of them in play, Krenko, Mob Boss is able to pop off. But with so many tokens in play, these cards look to give you even more of an advantage and open up opportunities to wipe every other player from the game in one turn. Shared Animosity, Vanquisher's Banner, Quest for the Goblin Lord, Eldrazi Monument, Goblin King, Goblin Trashmaster, and Goblin Chieftain all look to make your board even bigger and have your goblin tokens become legitimate threats. Mirage Mirror can copy these and pump up your tokens even more. Cards like Skirk Prospector, Goblin Chirurgeon, Goblin Sledder, and other cards all look to take advantage of your larger boards as well.

HASTE AND PROTECTION FOR OUR BOY-

Krenko, Mob Boss is the main man of the deck and he can win games if he taps just a couple times. But nothing feels worse than bringing him to the field and then having him removed before he can even get one tap off. Luckily, we have more than a few ways of countering that. First, we'll talk about the ways we can get him to tap immediately. We have Mass Hysteria, Fervor, Ogre Battledriver, Goblin Warchief, and Goblin Chieftain to give him haste. Thousand-Year Elixir is there for pseudo-haste so he can tap immediately. Cards like Helm of the Host and Rings of Brighthearth can help us reach multiple Krenko taps in one turn which can be game-changing. Cards like Mirage Mirror and Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker combo really well with those cards and can also lead to multiple Krenko's tapping and that can get your board out of hand insanely quickly. Now to talk about protecting him. Swiftfoot Boots gives him hexproof, Goblin Chirurgeon gives him regenerate, and Cavern of Souls makes him uncounterable. Did your opponent take control of him? Homeward Path fixes that right away.

COMBO STOPPERS AND CONTROL-

As an aggro deck, our main focus is on being the aggressor. But sometimes, we have to shut down our opponents before they start to get out of control or pull off some insane combos of their own. Magus of the Moon and BloodMoon shut down nonbasic land decks pretty hard. Especially if they don't use red mana. Detection Tower lets us target our enemies' important combo piece creatures. Blasphemous Act and Skirk Fire Marshal help us clear the board of states that are disadvantageous to us. Vandalblast helps us shut down our opponents' mana rocks and auras. Is your opponent about to swing for game with their commander or another heavy hitter? Stop it dead in its tracks with Maze of Ith. Goblin Assassin also helps with clearing the enemies' boards while we generate tokens. Wasteland can get rid of important lands that your opponent is relying on to either protect themselves or ramp efficiently.

TOKEN GENERATORS-

Tokens are an integral part of our deck's win conditions. Here is a short list of all the cards that can generate tokens besides Krenko, Mob Boss: Legion Warboss, Goblin Rabblemaster, Goblin Assault, Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker, Mirage Mirror, Siege-Gang Commander, and Krenko, Tin Street Kingpin.

ALTERNATE WIN-CONS-

Our final section of this guide is how else can we win the game besides swinging face? If combat isn't an option, we can look to simply burn them out with the ETB effect of Impact Tremors. Boggart Shenanigans was explained before but it can look to do infinite damage with sacrifice engines. Actually a lot of the alternate win conditions were explained in the mana portion of this guide. Whoops. Well, one win-won I haven't talked about is milling. We can mill out our opponents with cards like Grenzo, Havoc Raiser and Altar of the Brood. If we have a lot of tokens swinging at one opponent, Throne of the God-Pharaoh can burn out the others.

CONCLUSION-

This deck isn't perfect and I'm always looking for ways to improve it. Possible upgrades I've considered are Mana Crypt and Strip Mine. But I've been having a ton of success and fun with this deck so please tell me what you think!
