Defence of the Angels (New version! 7.01) —Jan. 3, 2017

Again, a new version of this deck.

After I playtested with declaration of stone for a while after the last update, ArTr came up with some card suggestions which made me look at this deck from a different perspective. Instead of going all in on exiling creatures, there are better ways to prevent opponents attacking you.

Taxes is the keyword this update. instead of running 14 cards that can exile enemies and 4 card that makes your opponent pay mana, this new version uses 9 cards that cane exile enemies and 8 cards that makes your opponent pay mana. Making a more even and in my opinion better spread and aproach to a game.

The new cards added in this version are:

  • 3 Ghostly Prison - Making your opponent pay mana to attack you, works well with Archangel of Tithes and stops certains kinds of decks (token and other mass creature decks). Is also a permanent which get protected by Avacyn, Angel of Hope, can be fetched from the graveyard by Emeria Shepherd and has some devotionj to white for Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx.

  • 2 Avacyn, Guardian Angel - 5 mana 5/4 flyer with vigilance is very strong, top this with 3 devotion to white and you already have a good card for this deck. Gives some more damage in the early-mid game, making you have other options instead of playing it late. Its first ability works well with the other newly added cards, your opponent attack with a couple of creatures, with this card any creature can block those creatures easily. Also great again burn decks, and makes getting counters on Luminarch Ascension easy.

  • 1 Sphere of Safety - same reason as Ghostly Prison on why its in the deck. This deck runs 9 enchantments, so its worth it to run 1. Fun fact, with all enchantments on the battlefield and 4 Archangel of Tithes it costs your opponent 19 mana to attack you with one creature.

Card that got removed were:

-3x Declaration in Stone

-1x Quarantine Field

-1x Admonition Angel

-1x Celestial Mantle

The sideboard has been updated as well in this update. It should be more accurate for what a sideboard is meant to do.

Good update!good to see that while you added more removal, you still have the chance to use it to keep the rythm by using the clues (but killing your own stuff), if you can make that change and still have a good mana income without endless horizons its really usefull, looking forward to see more of this! (still planning on building this deck, saving money :D)

Thanks ArTr!!!

Yeah, I kinda felt like the early game could still be lacking vs more early game focussed decks, and since this deck has a bit of a theme other then "angels" in "exiling" I thought it would be for the best to add some more removal.

Journey to Nowhere, Oust, Condemn, Devouring Light and Dismember were all options together with Declaration in Stone but because it can be used in so many ways, I chose Declaration in Stone.

Would be awesome if you could buy it! This deck is so much fun to play!

Yeah, im pretty excited to the idea of playing with it :), also, i just noticed that without Endless Horizons on the deck, 3 Admonition Angel might be too much, because now you no longer have the previous land drop chance. i think Avacyn, Guardian Angel would be a good replacement for one of the 3 Admonition Angel, its ability is kind of expensive, but then, with this deck that is actually no problem. Adding this card would enable you to first of all protect yourself and/or your creatures from damage, giving you more time if needed, giving you more counters for Luminarch Ascension, and overall, if you have this angel on the battlefield, having some untapped mana would never be bad, it would actually be a lifesaver when needed... sounds good at least in theory haha

Also, Angel Prison sounds good, while being about Angels and Exile, with all the exile cards Path to Exile,Quarantine Field,Declaration in Stone,Admonition Angel, the mana cost for attacking/blocking with Archangel of Tithes, you really have a prison play style

@ ArTr,

Wow I actually really like that name, I was thinking of changing the name soon so your suggestion came at the right time. Im gonna think about the name.

@ ArTr,

Thanks for giving the suggestion of Avacyn, Guardian Angel. I like it, I think. I agree with you that Admonition Angel maybe isnt that great anymore now that Endless Horizons is gone, however I think that the chance of me getting a land every turn is still decent with Weathered Wayfarer to say the least. It does make my Wall of Omens scale a little bit better into the lategame, making it better blockers with its first ability, and I can see its second ability save my life in certain scenario's. However, I'm not sure whether or not I like it more than Admonition Angel. They both have 3 devotion to white, which I really like, but Avacyn, Guardian Angel is legendary, so I could only run a maximum of 2. Also, Admonition Angel has a stronger 6/6 body, making her better in actual combat, which combo's well with her ability. The 1 difference in mana shouldnt really make a difference either in this deck, since you want to play Extraplanar Lens asap, which will give either 4 mana with 2 Plains, which isnt enough for either of the two, or 6 mana with 3 Plains which is enough for both. Even if you get Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx You will probably be able to easily produce 6 mana. The main reason im not 100% sold on Avacyn, Guardian Angel is that this deck may lack some offensive power, its main damage dealers are Admonition Angel and Entreat the Angels with a possible Archangel of Tithes or Avacyn, Angel of Hope that can help.

Still I like how you're thinking about this deck, and your suggestion is very interesting to say the least, Im gonna look for cards that might offer some more offensive power for this deck instead of Admonition Angel, Avacyn, Guardian Angel is a good contender, since she only has 1 less power for 1 less mana, but her first ability cant target herself i dont think, so the 4 toughness might be a problem.

ArTr says... #7

Yeah, i was thinking Avacyn, Guardian Angel could replace 1 of the Admonition Angel at most, just running 1 spot on the deck, if. I dont think that the difference in streght is that much, since in practice, creatures that have their main value on their activated or paid ability, you usually wont send out to combat unless its a safe go, or really have to. It does lower your actual creatures total power, but it improves your chances of defending well with walls as you said, getting counters for Luminarch Ascension faster (which will give you higher creature power, in mass), but yes, its kind of a 50-50 thing. No win-win replacement here

@ ArTr,

Hmmm, I've already given it some thought and I have three cards I might consider.

Avacyn, Guardian Angel - I feel like this card can buy me a lot of time. The devotion is nice, and it has good offensive power. It makes getting counters on Luminarch Ascension easy, but I think it really shifts the tone of the deck towards tokens. Putting one or two of this card in, would also raise the question of "Do I put more Luminarch Ascension or Entreat the Angels in this deck?". I dont really wanna put anymore Luminarch Ascensions in, since it doenst scale with how many you have. If you have 1 on the field, the second one is a dead draw. The only possible scenario where I would want two, is if my opponent has ways to destroy my enchantment and I want to already get counters on a possible backup Luminarch Ascension for if the first one gets destroyed. This is, while certainly possible, a pretty specific scenario. More copies of Entreat the Angels is also risky, its pretty bad early game. I could use it on turn 4, and I would get 1 token out of it. It is only in the late game that that card is good, from my playtesting I really like using 2 copies for that reason, If you draw one early, its 1 bad draw, I can deal with it, and if I didnt draw it early it only increases the chance that I draw it when I can use it, maybe even for its miracle cost. Kinda like in the game simulation. So im definetly thinking about this card, but im not sure if its the way I wanna go with the deck, or if Admonition Angel is the card to remove for it.

Soul of Theros - If you go for more tokens, This card is great I think. It can give all creatures +2/+2 (which is a lot and its already usable in turn 5, if you played the creature in turn 4) and the effect can stack with itself, if you have the mana. If you follow the game simulation, I could draw this card on turn 8, play it and activate its ability twice, giving all 17 4/4 angels +2/+2 and first strike + lifelink. It also has a very strong body, and although its not flying, has vigilance. 2 devotion is decent and its not legendary. The second effect is only for really clutch scenario's.

Serra Avatar If I want a more offensive power, this would be an option. Playable on turn 5, I should still have a lot of mana, 3 devotion is great, and scales with Celestial Mantle and possibly if both added Soul of Theros. Im not sure if this card is good, but with Rogue's Passage it can win you the game in turn 6.

Im also thinking about readding the second Rogue's Passage, but the problem is that I hate to draw it, unless I can use it. So just having one and being able to fetch it is maybe better.

What do you think about all these options?

December 29, 2016 6:05 p.m.

ArTr says... #9

I think that first of all, having 1 Rogue's Passage is enough since you want to fetch it, and only for its ability when needed, you most likely will never depend on it. Serra Avatar could be good, but you need to build the deck around it i think, adding more life gaining spells and damage prevention to ensure that it would work. Soul of Theros could be really good, provided you focus more on a critical mass of creatures, maybe soldier tokens for example, angels are too big for it i think (i actually like them being bigger), but yeah, it would be more orientated towards tokens with these options. I was thinking that to fit Avacyn, Guardian Angel as you said, maybe remove another card, for example one Tower of Fortunes ( only thinking about the relation between both cards overall and by turn mana consume), or one Quarantine Field, since you can replay two of those by using Emancipation Angel, having 3 is actually good, and even with that, if you get an Emeria Shepherd ingame, you can keep reviving your Emancipation Angel and throwing them to die after just to keep using the Quarantine Field if needed.

@ ArTr

I've been giving it a lot of thought, searching for replacement cards for Tower of Fortunes and trying to make this deck token focussed, but that all failed. This deck just isnt meant to be a full-fledged token deck. I want to have big tokens, things like Secure the Wastes and White Sun's Zenith among other cards just change the dynamic of the deck too much. It would just become a completely different deck. Because of this I've decided to scratch Soul of Theros out, I dont think its worth it. Serra Avatar is also a no-go, it asks too much from this deck, its better in deck that focus on lifegain, like you said.

So changing the style of this deck into a lifegain or token deck didnt work out, but I was still thinking about Avacyn, Guardian Angel. If I would want to go for an extreme control deck, with lot's of exile and lot's of taxes, Ghostly Prison might be great. I've theorycrafted with Thalia, Guardian of Thraben (which I should probably take out fo my sideboard), Vryn Wingmare, Magus of the Tabernacle and Windborn Muse among other cards. Ghostly Prison together with Archangel of Tithes makes it impossible to attack me. Even if they get 1 strong creature through, I can use Avacyn, Guardian Angel and block without taking any risks. This buys me time for Luminarch Ascension, Entreat the Angels and maybe a slowly killing startegy featuring Rogue's Passage.

I think this kind of deck is really interesting and I really like it personally. It removes any of the flaws I think this deck has, and it just blends in really well. And of course, most importantly, your name suggestion of angel prison becomes way better if I actually feature Ghostly Prison. If I follow through with this plan (need to do a lot of playtesting) Ill name the deck something like that cause you helped get me on the idea with your Avacyn, Guardian Angel suggestion. If this all fails, Ill just put all this in my sideboard.

What do you think about this taxes kinda playstyle?

ArTr says... #11

Really goood ideas there!, i Think that with Ghostly Prison together with Avacyn, Guardian Angel plus Archangel of Tithes its almost impossible to attack you, and thanks to Avacyn, Guardian Angel you wouldnt have to mind direct damage spells against you or your creatures. You can even go further and While having Avacyn, Angel of Hope its almost impossible to kill anything yours, attack you or block your creatures, that would be a real prison (Not to mention the effects that a Iona, Shield of Emeria would have in this kind of composition). Overall i think that adding those cards (Avacyn, Guardian Angel, Ghostly Prison and maybe x1 Iona, Shield of Emeria) would put you in control of the table most times. I wouldnt add the other cards you mentioned (Thalia, Guardian of Thraben, Vryn Wingmare, Magus of the Tabernacle and Windborn Muse) because it would change the way your fetching, defending/drawing and replaying cards in the early game works, thus slowing down your game, and the removal cards must still be there i think (most of them).

Also, yesterday i played some modern with some friends, and the only time i lost (using a vampire lifelink, and sacrifice deck) was against an infect deck, i couldnt handle the poison counters... well, with Avacyn, Guardian Angel you dont have to worry about poison counters, because thats damage as well.

Okay, i was thinking about this theoretical deck that includes both Ghostly Prison and Avacyn, Guardian Angel and i thought that while having those (plus Archangel of Tithes, you really shouldnt worry that much about enemy creatures, so maybe having x3Declaration in Stone is too much, the x4 Path to Exile still gives value for its land fetching. Then in this theoretical deck, the main problem would be removal spells, and the ones that could target Avacyn, Guardian Angel and the Enchantments ( Because with Avacyn, Guardian Angel you can protect every other creature easily). So then i started searching for cards that could protect your permanents and i stumbled upon some, so here they are: First, the ones that are not permanents would be Valorous Stance and Make a Stand, the first keeps the removal value (some of it) if you dont really need to protect something, then the second one gives the ability to all your creatures, which is nice. I personally wouldnt pick any of those for the purpose of protecting Avacyn and the enchantments (because those can only protect creatures). Then we have the permanents, starting with Privileged Position, because it can protect everything but itself from the spells or abilities of your oponent, and it can gain indestructible from Avacyn, Angel of Hope. Then we have That Which Was Taken, which is a lot more expensive when using, but, you can protect any permanent (including one that your oponent controls) but itself. Regarding the two previous permanents, the first one has a lot higher effect, but then, indestructible from the second makes them immune to lethal damage, even from combat. for the last pick i chose Darksteel Plate, because it gives indestructible only to one creature, but it is indestructible itself, securing that the equiped creature is as indestructible as it can get. with all of the mana this deck produces having That Which Was Taken wouldnt be a problem, but then, you must keep in mind that you will also want mana for the abilities of Avacyn, Guardian Angel, so maybe, going on with this theory, its better to pick either Privileged Position for its wide effect, or Darksteel Plate for its safety.

@ ArTr,

Yeah after thinking about it for a while, I really like the Ghostly Prison + Archangel of Tithes combo together with Avacyn, Guardian Angel. This deck used to have 1 Iona, Shield of Emeria in it, I'm not sure if it should be in the main deck, but with this new style of play, I think its definetly a solid sideboard card.

As for cards to remove, I do like the taxes style over the exile one, it just seems more relaible. For that reason I think im gonna remove all 3 Declaration in Stone. kinda sucks cause I just bought them haha, oh well, they'll fit in some other deck. I thinks its ok to remove 1 Quarantine Field like you suggested. However, after doing some playtesting with 4 different decks I didnt like removing all 3 Admonition Angels. All my offensive power beside tokens would be completely gone, and otherwise I would be removing 7 exiling cards all at once. The 4 test decks were:

1) +1 Wall of Omens, +2 Avacyn, Guardian Angel and +4 Ghostly Prison. removing: -3 Declaration in Stone, -3 Admonition Angel and -1 Quarantine Field.

2) +1 Avacyn, Guardian Angel and +3 Ghostly Prison. removing: -3 Declaration in Stone, and -1 Quarantine Field.

3) +1 Avacyn, Guardian Angel and +4 Ghostly Prison. removing: -3 Declaration in Stone, -1 Admonition Angel and -1 Quarantine Field.

4) +2 Avacyn, Guardian Angel and +3 Ghostly Prison. removing: -3 Declaration in Stone, -1 Admonition Angel and -1 Quarantine Field.

I'm not sure whether ot not 3 or 4 Ghostly Prisons works better, and whether or not I really need a second Avacyn, Guardian Angel.

As for the hexproof/indestructible protection cards, I'm not completely convinced whether or not I need to add cards with its main purpose to protect one card, of course it can work with all cards, but to me it seems a bit overkill. If Avacyn, Guardian Angel gets killed, it means she at least took a removal spell, protecting other angels. And if not exiled, it can bring her back with either Emeria Shepherd or Emeria, The Sky Ruin. However, I think Privileged Position is still interesting, might need to do some testing with it. You did raise a valid point though, and I thought Deathless Angel might also be a good card. It can function as a replacement for Admonition Angel, trading the landfall for the ability to make creatures (including herself) indestructible, and trading 1 power for 1 toughness and 1 devotion to white. I like the card, but I think im removing to many exiling cards if I were to remove all Admonition Angels.

ArTr says... #14

Pretty good points there, i think as you said, that having all 3 Admonition Angel removed would be a terrible idea, but also it being your main brute force would also be quite risky (if it leaves the game, everything exiled with it comes back, and very angry). I think you can afford to replace 1 of the Admonition Angel. Now, regarding Avacyn, Guardian Angel, i would go with 2 copies just for the chances of drawing it, or even having one in backup if the other gets removed (and you dont have another way of bringing it back). For Ghostly Prison i think x3 is enough, remember that you have x4 Archangel of Tithes as well, and with replayable Wall of Omens you have a higher chance of drawing them (your deck is more than 10% taxes cards, counting the lands). I agree on removing x3Declaration in Stone, if you have really high tax power, you dont actually need to worry about your oponent attacking you with creatures, he/she wont be able to afford it, literally. My doubts are with two cards really, one of them being Celestial Mantle, because it cant actually make sure you get counters for Luminarch Ascension(the ruling says that the card checks if life was lost or not in during the turn, not giving importance if you later gained more life. only if life was lost, not the ending life total.) The other one i have my doubts with is Tower of Fortunes, because, if you add Avacyn, Guardian Angel the mana you will be spending on abilities and not on casting increases, and a lot, and more if you add, lets say, x1 Deathless Angel. Maybe removing just one copy, if you can afford it.

If i had to change the cards, these would be my picks:

Basic:

+2 Avacyn, Guardian Angel,+3 Ghostly Prison

-3 Declaration in Stone, -1Quarantine Field, -1 Tower of Fortunes

Maybe:

+1 Iona, Shield of Emeria (-1 Celestial Mantle or Admonition Angel)

+1 Deathless Angel (-1 Admonition Angel)

Also, if you want even more taxes, there is Norn's Annex and Sphere of Safety (i think the second one would scale up pretty good in this deck)

@ ArTr,

I think I'm about finished deciding which cards to use. I've playtested a lot, vs no opponents, vs this version of the deck, vs the top 3 aggro decks which were recently deckcycled, the top 3 burn decks which were recently deckcycled, the top 3 control decks which were recently deckcycled, the top 3 token decks which were recently deckcycled and three random modern deck on the recently deckcycled page. I have too much free time atm.

The version I used, and really like, is the version where i removed 3 Declaration in Stone, 1 Quarantine Field, 1 Admonition Angel and 1 Celestial Mantle (a card I really like, and im really sad to remove it, but its the best option. Also possibly my favourite card art). And added 3 Ghostly Prisons, 2 Avacyn, Guardian Angel and 1 Sphere of Safety.

I think its pretty well balanced this way, and I will update the deck tomorrow, prolly with a new name and everyhting, updating the description is gonna be a lot of work, and im not gonna change the game simulation cause that actually took me a whole day. And for the new name, I need to think of something along the lines of angel prison like you suggested. What do you think of the final version?

ill give you a shoutout in the description cause you helped improve the deck so much! Thanks a ton!

Cool! i think its a great version! i would probably still find a way to add Iona, Shield of Emeria since i like it so much (personal preference), maybe replacing x1 Tower of Fortunes, i think that with that 1 Sphere of Safety you added is enough, since ist just like the tax overkill, no need for more of those.

Im actually saving some money to buy the cards, selling one of my guitars, trying to find buyers for my liliana of the veil, etc...

It was/is really funny to help build this deck, since im really interested on it, and of course, i helped a little, but most of the work you did it yourself, good job!
