Set Exploration: Commander 2019 —Aug. 15, 2019

Oh boy! It's been a while since a big update, and Commander 2019 is the perfect opportunity. Still love and play this deck (just got it some new sleeves), and there sure are some fun updates this set!

New Recruits

Unsuprisingly, with a Naya-colored token themed deck, there are a TON of potential additions. As always, this Gahiji build tries to balance politics and token aggro, and these are the kind of cards I'm interested in:

  • Marisi, Breaker of the Coil: Yeah. This cat fucks. Not only is it a perfectly, amazingly on-theme card, you could even have it as the commander of this deck in Gahiji's place.

  • Tahngarth, First Mate: A hilarious card in the same wheelhouse as Rite of the Raging Storm. One of the biggest downsides of Rite is the prevelance of sacrifice outlets (and also Skullclamp) in EDH; Tahngarth gets around these issues, but is easier to remove. Personally, I think this effect is so much fun, I'm just going to try to run both.

  • Bloodthirsty Blade: A home run. The effect is cheap, powerful, and perfect for Gahiji.

  • Pendant of Prosperity: The sort of Group Hug-adjacent effect that we want. Usually, best to give this out to the person that's most behind (you want them to use it, after all). Won't break a stalemate when it's down to 1v1, that's for sure, but it certainly gets the politicking game started early.

  • Gerrard, Weatherlight Hero: I'm not 100% sold on Gerrard yet; most of the time he's just a 5/3 first striking bruiser. However, wrath protection is always good, so he still might be worth running! Personally, I think Dauntless Escort is just slightly better here.

Other Cards to Consider

As mentioned above, the new Naya deck this year has any number of cards for token support. Although, honestly, if you're running Gahiji for pure token aggro, you might just be better off running the deck's headliner: Ghired, Conclave Exile!

My Swaps:

I'm kinda surprised you didn't comment on Bramble Sovereign. Too unreliable/costly ability?

Coward_Token - Yeah, I guess it's because Bramble Sovereign is no better in this deck than any other deck with green. It's kinda a classic Goodstuff card. It has some limited political applications since you can copy other people's stuff, though - so I suppose it's worth mentioning!

Yeah the main synergies I saw with the Sovereign was the potential to copy your own token makers (Akroan Horse would be hilarious) as well as other people's stuff that work well with Gahiji (the Primal Vigor variant is extra funny here). As usual the deck's current state is pretty tight so it's hard to point out what to replace with the Sovereign.

Hey, I'm not completely sure how great of an option it is for your deck, but Meglonoth seems like a decent deterrent so people don't attack you, alongside everything else in here to incentivize being left alone. I'm mainly bringing it up because I am not made of money so budget options are always welcome, and a 39 cent DONT FUCK WITH ME creature seems pretty inviting.

Hey just wondering if Divine Visitation you think is worth slotting in

chiri: Sure! Especially in more aggro heavy builds. Easy to cut in place of similar enchantments like Curse of Bloodletting , Assemble the Legion , Mystic Barrier or Rite of the Raging Storm .

Something I consistently enjoy about Gahiji is its ability to skew from straight token beats to silly political aggro - the right mix of beats vs politics is ultimately up to your play style and meta.

With the release of C19 we are getting an AMAZING goad commander: Marisi, Breaker of the Coil . I definitely think he deserves a spot in this list as well as the new equipment: Bloodthirsty Blade . Do you think he could even take the spot at the helm of the deck? Or would you build a more 'all out attack' style list for him and forgo the politics and pillow fort. Interesting to think about...
