Looked through the deck. Gotta say, a Fumiko deck is gutsy and I like the Kazuul. That's a good combo. Not sure where you're going with the deck though. I see lots of walls and dragons and I think I'd go for some cheaper attackers, to amp up the liklihood of Fumiko's bushido working well. And maybe the red mentor, to allow her to nix guy's in her way faster. I'd also throw in some more trample-giving equipment, like Vorrac Battlehorns in order to allow you to take better advantage of Fumiko's bushido.

The point of Fumiko's bushido is defensive. Consider that if she wants to attack, there won't really be much of anyone available to block her once she's been on the battlefield for a full round.

I suppose...I was just suggesting a possible direction for the deck. I had no idea what you wanted to do with Fumiko, since she does well in rushes or on defense.

Trust me, I know what Fumiko does. If I'm not going in one of the two obvious directions for a deck like this, shouldn't it be apparent that I'm going in the other? =P

True. Alright, no further recommendations.

Insurrection

and

Gratuitous Violence spring to mind first.

Check out Heartless Groundeater EDH if you like for some filthy red cards.

Other than that, consider adding some banding tech for your walls. It's really amazing for defense.

Disaster Radius is a very powerful card. I use it in my Jhoira deck and I've never been sad to cast it. It could be a major game changer, and with all the big ol' dudes you have in here, it could definitely make for a potent spell when the chips are down.

Ah, I have Disaster Radius in my Scion deck, but I guess I forgot about it here because there weren't any more extra copies in my binder. I'll try to get another one. Thanks!

Hmmm, I think a major concern for this deck is that it has too many cards that don't actually do a lot for this particular kind of deck.

For instance, equipping a wall with an accorder's shield is not very exciting in the slightest, and you probably don't have enough creature that can make use of it in there to warrant the whole slew of these virtual do-nothings.

Anyway, I think it might be better to take a look at other red ray of command-type cards. There are a couple of them out there, and in a multiplayer EDH deck they're likely to be excellent cards: Temporary Insanity and Blind with Anger .

Now, if you're playing a deck with a lot of walls in it, I suggest cutting all the low cost attackers as they're just not going to be good enough and they don't mesh in with your game plan. The sliths could be replaced with some higher cost cards that work well with fumiko, like Cyclops Gladiator and Butcher's Orgg. If they can't block, these guys will probably eat relevant creatures each turn.

About the dragon problem...I guess you could play Hivis of the Scale just to nerf Chewie's general, which would be a dirtbag move, but you could play the lesser known red heavies. Giants ofa ny kind are incredible, the Djinns and efreets are powerful(Emberwilde Djinn , Capricious Efreet ) and some of the phoenices are good hitters, particularly the Skarrgan Firebird and the magma/shard phoenix.

When I saw Fumiko, I thought of Meekstone . Definitely something to consider.

Finally I'll suggest a direct upgrade: Wall of Razors . He's fragile, but he's gonna kill a lot of cards that run into it.

Then I listened to the podcast some more and heard a lot of my recommendations. How awkward. Anyway, I'll try to make it up by suggesting some more cards!

First of all, I'd try to run one of the many books out there, like Jayemdae Tome in addition to serum tank. The original card advantage machine has always been a great card in my red EDH decks, and I guess it will be here too.

Instead of living armor, you could run card:Belbe's Armor. It is reusable and has a massive upside. It can easily save most creatures from burn-based removal, it can negate an attacker. It's a great card if you can afford it.

Similarly, Pyrohemia goes well with a lot of high toughness creatures. You could run it instead of slice&dice.

Assuming you don't mind losing walls, you could use Heat Stroke as a combo with fumiko. They're losing their awesome creatures and you're trading walls for it. Seems fair.

Finally, red often just needs a way to zap something. Knollspine Invocation can turn any card in your hand into a Blaze at instant speed. Perhaps you could replace ogre's cleaver with this. Works great with phoenices by the way.

Hey Rhad, you commented on my Fumiko deck (which hasn't been updated on TappedOut for a while now). I agree that Blockbuster , Rock Slide , and other "punish attacking" cards are pretty underwhelming when actually played. The best thing I found to up the playability of the deck was to throw in a bunch of dragons; they aren't on-theme, but they did stop me from losing every game :)

You know, I'm surprised I didn't already have Comet Storm in here. I'll try to remember to check and see if I have any spare copies of it when I have some time later.

This deck is hilarious. Your general's ability would keep forcing people to attack, which stops a lot of build up that people might attempt (Like all the EDH players do in my playgroup - none are really aggro, which makes games slow). I love it. +1 from me.

One of the points of the most recent update was to remove all of the purely defensive cards still left in the deck, as they were in conflict with the spirit of why the deck was built.

I like this new version.

Avatar of SlaughterMTG Card: Avatar of Slaughter is another edition of Fumiko's/Grand Melee's ability, and he's a hefty body too, so might be worth considering.

Hellrider and Moonveil DragonMTG Card: Moonveil Dragon, once you get them, probably merit consideration as well.

Why StarstormMTG Card: Starstorm instead of Comet StormMTG Card: Comet Storm? The latter seems more versatile, though Starstorm costs less to do a board wipe, I suppose.

Rhadamanthus says... #19

The Avatar is a good call. One big reason I didn't think about him is because I haven't gone back and torn down / rebuilt the non-Mimeoplasm Commander Precons.

Don't worry, HELLRIDER and the Dragon are already under consideration. I'll add them to the Maybeboard to make that clear.

The #1 reason Starstorm is here is because my only copy of Comet Storm was already in my Scion deck, but I might think about switching them.

Makes sense. I don't like to share cards between decks either, gets messy that way. (I've also forgotten that I borrowed a couple cards out of a deck and played with a 98-card deck once. Not really a big deal, but on principle a problem.)

Though, Comet StormMTG Card: Comet Storm's never gotten much love, it's got to be a dollar rare by now, right? Especially since it was printed in the Commander sets. You can probably find one pretty cheap. (Hell, I think I have an extra, I'd trade it to you if you want.)

Something else occurred to me. Loxodon WarhammerMTG Card: Loxodon Warhammer? I know it makes people groan, but imagine all that juicy lifelink on your high-power creatures, to say nothing of the trample.

January 24, 2012 4:01 p.m.

Rhadamanthus says... #21

Huh. I have all the Commander decks, but forgot Comet Storm was included. Like I said, I haven't really paid attention to the non-Mimeoplasm ones in a while. Also, because I don't play very often anymore, I try to build out of what I have, and I only go shopping or trading if I'm looking for something I really want and can't find a substitute for it.

Apparently, in response to your suggestion, the Warhammer went back in time and inserted itself into the very first build of the deck.

perhaps things like Hellkite ChargerMTG Card: Hellkite Charger, World at WarMTG Card: World at War, Savage BeatingMTG Card: Savage Beating (a personal favorite of mine), etc?

Rhadamanthus says... #24

All my copies of Savage BeatingMTG Card: Savage Beating are busy right now, but World at WarMTG Card: World at War and similar friends almost made it into this last revision. I'll put them back in the Maybeboard and think about it some more.
