Rivals of Ixalan Update —Jan. 3, 2018

Angrath, the Flame-Chained is the perfect addition to this deck. I completely took out Costly Plunder; to compensate for this loss of card-draw, I added in 3x Glint-Sleeve Siphoner

Love the deck idea and i can't wait to test it out. Have you thought about Fling or Heart-Piercer Manticore? It would be really nice to take their creature, hit them with it and then throw it at their face.

I actually built a version of this deck. Heart-Piercer Manticore was too much mana to cast on the same turn with the mind control

Snivy__ agreed; I never want to process to take more than 5 mana. These new cards from Ixalan Captivating Crew, Ruthless Knave , and Makeshift Munitions are a godsend for the deck

Made a similar deck in straight red The Witwicki Motto, there is one thing more gratifying - having your opponent brag about their stuff before you steal it.

You're right, that is horrifying - Yoink - Know the horror!

What do you think of Costly Plunder for some card draw?

Or Defiant Salvager as a free sac outlet?

Drakorya I appreciate those suggestions! I think Defiant Salvager will make for a better choice than Yahenni, Undying Partisan.

Costly Plunder is a bit too situational- I need to have the mana to cast a mind-control spell and have Costly Plunder in hand. However, I'm sorely needing card draw and I'm not sure Ruthless Knave is good enough card draw! I will experiment

SirMandorallen Sorry for such a late response- I completely missed seeing your suggestions!

I tried using Fling at first with this deck, but then started moving away from situational single-use cards like it and, for example, Costly Plunder because I would often be caught with these cards in-hand without either a creature to sacrifice for them or without the mana to steal a creature and then sac it. However, this deck has become able to deal much more damage with new Ixalan cards and 2 copies of Fling may find a place.

I also have a similar deck, and oftentimes run into trouble with enchantments. What card would you add to deal with enchantments? By the way, my deck is just Red and Black, though I've been considering a 3rd color.

Duress works well.

@Bluedawg79 I'd personally recommend splashing white to get fragmentize. With all the legendary enchantments running around it's been performing quite well for me.

@Abubs i dont know about your local meta, but mine basically dont play the enchantments until they can flip them that turn so sorcery speed removal is dead. i do love the idea if i could find instant speed though.

Nereket very interesting; are the legendary enchantments really something I need to be worried about though? Seems like it takes more work than it's worth to try and stop people from using the legendary enchantments against me

I'd consider adding Kari Zev, Skyship Raider. Not because the card has a ton of synergy with the current deck, but little Ragavan would enable you to play Fling and Costly Plunder more safely. I might build this myself (because your deck is sweet) and i'll see if i can fit in 2-3. It gives you something to do early, and it's another card to play of her own expertise. I'm asuming you use the free twodrop to cast Walk the Plank / Wrangle.

A question: how does this deck deal with Bristling Hydra. Hexproof seems detrimental, and sweltering is just out of reach if he pumps. Maybe a couple of Harsh Mentor in the side?

Skinken really awesome advice, thanks for the input! I was floundering a bit with attempting to run a Gonti, Lord of Luxury and Sword-Point Diplomacy. I will also test out a combination of Kari Zev, Skyship Raider and Costly Plunder.

I'm glad you mentioned the side board- Harsh Mentor is a good addition for most of the current matchups. Beyond the Mentor, I'm honestly not sure how to deal with the Bristling Hydra.

If I have a Sweltering Suns in hand, I can steal on of my opponents creatures and attack in hopes that the Bristling Hydra will block. Once the Hydra has a bit of damage, I might be able to deal enough Sweltering Suns damage to finish it off.

JakeBreake I'd consider Bontu's Last Reckoning, at least in the side. It has the same effect as Sweltering Suns but it's good for dealing with the damn hydra. It's good in the side anyways, since most opponents will side out big threats to not get hit by them xDThe good news about Bristling Hydra is that it's their only real threat against you. I like how Glorybringer is an absolute joke. You can steal it, untap it, swing + exert so it doesn't untap during their next untap. Then you can safely pass it back and steal it next turn. Disgusting

I was just about to remind you of exile removal. For Hazoret mostly. Then i remembered that indistructible =/= non-sacrificable. So great! Maybe a way of killing The Scarab God would be nice tho. That card can spiral out of control so hard.

I made my own decklist for this btw. It makes use of Hidden Stockpile, Kari Zev, Skyship Raider and also Bone Picker. It needs testing tho...

I made a deck called Mine!. Runs of the same principals, but you've honestly got nothing for control.
