Flicker n' Splice: Because sometimes it's useful to take a break from existence

Ghostly Flicker

Hello Community!

'Flicker n' Splice' 's ultimate objective is to fill your entire battlefield with strong, flying, first striking golem tokens. To achieve this, we will make ETB effects like 'Scry 3', 'Draw two cards' or 'Put a 3/3 creature onto the battlefield' repeatable by adding a handful flicker effects. Among these are:

  • Cloudshift - 1 mana anti-removal and ETB abuser.

  • Ghostly Flicker/Ghostway - 3 mana anti-removal with additional uses: Ghostly Flicker will in most cases create more Golem s, while Ghostway will also dodge mass removal, but won't give you more Golem tokens.

  • Flickerwisp - ETB effect enabler, or temporary removal. 3 power in the air is nothing to sneer at, and although the wisp is suspectable to removal, it has already done its work once it enters the battlefield. Bonus: If you somehow get to flicker the Flickerwisp on any end step, you may exile ANYthing for an entire round!

  • Venser, the Sojourner - An awesome planeswalker that speaks to all your ETB creatures, and demands they praise him like a god. No, seriously, his first ability is GOLD and is all you need him for. Also, reach his ultimate ability for a bonus free ticket to victory.

For every time you let a creature enter the battlefield, you are sure to get twice the effect out of each one. Here is how each of these creatures are going to help you with their abilities:

  • Blade Splicer/ Wing Splicer / Master Splicer - Create one 3/3 golem with either flying, first strike or an additional +1/+1, and a 1/1 body that your opponent would rather focus on. Cloudshift/Ghostway from removal and to aquire another 3/3, and combine with Venser, the Sojourner and/or Deadeye Navigator to aquire A LOT of 3/3's.

  • Court Hussar - Card advantage + card selection once or twice. As its main downside is the fact that flickering kills it, this is not what you normally want to spend Cloudshift on.

  • Mulldrifter - Divination, please go. This badass fishface takes care of your card draw for the same cost, and is abusable as heck. Think Cloudshift. This card might as well read 2U: Draw two cards, 2UW: Draw four cards. On top of it all, if you get the flying fish to stay on the battlefield, you are sure to be able to draw all the cards you want.

  • Silverblade Paladin - The reason I only run 2x Blade Splicer is because of this guy. Why give your 3/3 or 4/4 golems first strike when they could just as easily get double strike? His soulbound ability helps a lot, because even if you aren't meant to flicker the paladin, he synergises with your other creatures being flickered!

  • Venser, Shaper Savant - Truly a unique card. It is (as far as I know) the only card in Magic that counters spells without actually countering them! Flash in as a response to Supreme Verdict or Pearl Lake Ancient being put on the stack, and you may have made your opponent waste an important turn. He's also very flexible, as you can also save a permanent of your choice. On top of it all, if you want to use Venser again without burning your flicker spells, it is noteworthy that he combos with himself! | Venser, Shaper Savant + Venser, the Sojourner |

  • Clever Impersonator - For every permanent mentioned above, there are that many possibilities this card can bring to the game. As it enters the battlefield, it is already a copy of the permanent you want it to be, meaning you will also get the permanent's ETB effect. An additional Splicer n' Golem of your choice? Four mana. Your own copy of your opponent's planeswalker? Four mana. I herd you liek a copy of Oblivion Ring to exile his Oblivion Ring so u can exile while u exile his exiling card? YO DAWG, FOUR MANA!

Other important cards that aren't directly connected to ETB effects:

  • Scout's Warning - A neat cantrip that combines well with any creature in the deck, as you can choose to hold mana open for creatures as well counterspells and/or anti-removal on your opponent's turn.

  • Mana Leak - The counterspell of my choice that will probably target other early threats that you won't be able to deal with on the board.

Sideboard reasoning on the way.

(just have to make a complete sideboard first..)

Honorable mentions that didn't quite make it:

  • Aether Vial - While this deck was still under construction, this artifact opened the door for some awesome interactions: For free, I was able to 'flash' in Flickerwisp to make Fiend Hunter's second ability trigger before his first ability did, permanently exiling the creature it targeted. Same goes for Oblivion Ring. Now I'm not even sure if it is worthy a place in the sideboard, as it is really slow to get going and sometimes unreliable for my uses. I consider Scout's Warning a valid replacement, just because it doesn't have the flaws Aether Vial has.

  • Conjurer's Closet - Basically an extra ETB effect once per turn, but I consider Venser, the Sojourner better fit for the task, since he gets a potentional bonus (his emblem) everytime he exiles.

  • Deadeye Navigator - if this fella hits the board, you should have won the game. Up to three times evasion for him or the creature he's soulbound with, and oh sweet nelly all the ETB effects you can get for two mana. This card is, however, rather expensive in contrast of Ghostway, which abuses ETB just as hard and dodges mass removal with ease.

Updates Add

Clever Impersonator is a better version of Clone, since it offers greater flexibility (i.e. it can also give me another Oblivion Ring ). Thank you Dreno33 for the suggestion.
