Maybeboard

This is my take on an optimized merfolk edh deck. Feel free to ask as many questions about this deck as you want. I will try to answer everything I can.

I really appreciate any feedback about this deck as it helps me and the deck to improve. And if you like the deck please make sure to leave a like.

Try to overwhelm your opponents by starting to drop as many merfolk as fast as possible in the first few turns. Then try and draw the lords you need in order to quickly finish them off before they can built a strong board themselves.

If the first plan does not work try to setup combos in order to win in the lategame. I will talk about all combos in a later section of this description.

The deck started with Derevi, Empyrial Tactician as Commander. I liked the idea of Bant Merfolk so that i could use both the Lorwyn Merfolk as well as the new Ixalan Merfolk. In Addition to that Derevi, Empyrial Tactician also had a tap/untap theme which works great with Merfolk. However I quickly realized that most of the deck is blue/green and there aren't many good White Merfolk other than Stonybrook Schoolmaster , Sygg, River Guide and the Sorcery Summon the School . White was therefore mostly used for good board wipes and these 3 Merfolk. Additionally it kinda bothered me that I did not have a Merfolk as a Commander.

The new Commander became Tishana, Voice of Thunder . She was the only Simic Merfolk Commander that atleast somehwat synergized with having a bunch of Merfolk on the field. Unique about that Version was that it was full of copy effects. This way i could copy merfolk lords to boost my army even more. I could also copy tishana to draw new Cards as well. Espacially Spitting Image was the MVP of the deck and won me quite a few games.

When Rivals of Ixalan finally brought a true Simic Merfolk Commander I immediatly changed the deck to have Kumena, Tyrant of Orazca at the helm. He brought back the tap/untap theme I enjoyed alot and combined it with the ability to draw Cards just like Tishana, Voice of Thunder did. In order to abuse Kumena's abilities I switched almost all clone Cards for untap effects like Quest for Renewal .

And this is now my current Version I really love to play. It combines everything I like about the game: Combos, swinging with many creatures and control.

With the Cryptolith Rite + Paradox Engine combo we can generate infite colored mana as long as we have enough spells in our hand. Each spell will untap all of our merfolk in order to draw new cards or cast more spells. Intruder Alarm can substitute Paradox Engine if we have enough creatures to keep the combo going.

With Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx + Merrow Reejery it is possible to genereate an absurd amount of blue mana as Long as you can play a merfolk spell. Most merfolk spells only cost blue mana and therefore will only generate mana when Merrow Reejery can untap Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx . To start this engine you only need about 3-4 Devotion and a couple of extra lands besides Nykthos. This combo is very strong and has won me many games. Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx alone can ramp you very hard even without Merrow Reejery. Hence I included Crop Roation and Tolaria West in my deck to tutor for Nykthos whenever I want.

One of my win conditions is Wanderwine Prophets and any way to make them unblockable. One of the themes of merfolk is islandwalk and unblockability which makes it pretty easy to connect with Wanderwine Prophets . Many people dislike to win with infite turns but in contrast to Inalla, Archmage Ritualist it is not infite in this deck and therefore I really like this merfolky way of winning.

Untappers like Seedborn Muse naturally work well with Kumena, Tyrant of Orazca . Tapping your merfolk on every turn in a multiplayer match is almost like getting an extra turn. One full Rotation with Kumena, Tyrant of Orazca + Seedborn Muse can draw you tons of cards or buff your Team so much that even dragons will look like goats.
