Firesong and Sunspeaker EDH

The Commander

This is a prototype EDH deck for the recently announce Firesong and Sunspeaker legendary creature (Dominaria buy-a-box promo card). I put this list together due to my love of Boros and my desire for a commander that gave instants and sorceries lifelink ( Soulfire Grand Master would have been perfect! ). I was very excited upon seeing Firesong and Sunspeaker in the Dominaria mechanics document that got leaked last month. So here we go.

  1. Red instants and sorceries you control have lifelink: This is the juicy bit that most of the deck is based around. Whenever we deal damage to a creature, planeswalker, or player, we are going to gain that much life. This completely breaks mass damage spells like Star of Extinction which we will be able to use to gain literally hundreds of life, maybe even thousands with Boon Reflection out (hundreds and thousands depends on amount of creatures out, but if someone is token generating this will be huge). This works similarly with other cards such as Blasphemous Act and doubles up with Dictate of the Twin Gods or Furnace of Rath.

  2. Whenever you cast a white instant or sorcery which causes you to gain life, deal 3 damage to target creature or player: We won't be utilizing this ability too much since we are focusing on red damage. It's nifty, but not good enough to use to try and attach a bolt to a Beacon of Immortality or such since we would already be gaining that much life from something like Blasphemous Act which might only cost 1 mana and not only deal much, much more damage but also gain us a ton of life. Regardless, this ability is nice to have around and might be useful after some needed playtesting.

  3. Mana Cost: 4RW is a lot of mana for a commander, so we've included lots of mana rocks to get that going. Mana Crypt can come down early since our red instants and sorceries will be gaining back the life and more that we lose to it. Plus, we want Firesong and Sunspeaker out as soon as possible and 0 mana for 2 colorless will certainly help. It's highly unlikely although possible to drop our commander turn 1 with a Command Tower, Chrome Mox exiling Boros Charm, Mana Crypt, and Mana Vault. Tap mana crypt for mana vault, net 4 colorless, tap chrome mox for red or white and tap command tower for red or white. Thus, turn 1 Firesong and Sunspeaker. This funny little detail aside, he does cost a lot of mana so he will need plenty of protection. Lightning Greaves, Red Elemental Blast, Teferi's Protection, Boros Charm, Mark of Asylum (since we will be doing plenty of damage to all creatures), Gift of Immortality, and Rebuff the Wicked are all cards that will help provide protection for our commander. To avoid him getting even more expensive, we also have access to Command Beacon.

  4. Colors: We are working with Boros here, so we don't have the greatest tutors that black would provide or the great counterspells we could get from blue. We just went through the cards we'll be able to use to deal with the counterspell situation (although I would like to add Reverberate and other similar cards can copy counters and counter them), so let's note in terms of tutors we can utilize the great Enlightened Tutor and the risky but wonderful Gamble. We'll get more into it later, but Sunforger is also here. Another thing we lack a little on is card draw, but we've got Faithless Looting, Cathartic Reunion, and Reforge the Soul to give some refreshments. Past in Flames can also extend our hand a little bit for a turn or two.

  1. Sunforger : This is the ultimate Sunforger commander. In this deck, we can get Sunforger with Gamble or Enlightened Tutor, or we can use Sunforger to play Enlightened Tutor and fetch something evil like Dictate of the Twin Gods to load up for our Price of Progress. This hammer basically allows us to get almost anything we need. We can use it to copy a spell with Fork or Reverberate, we can use it to win the game with Price of Progress, we can use it to tutor with Enlightened Tutor, we can use it to save ourselves with a Teferi's Protection or Angel's Grace in case someone pulls a shenanigan during our game winning moves. We could also use it to play Glorious End and then use it again next turn to play Angel's Grace to take an extra turn for 3 mana. Path to Exile, Swords to Plowshares, Tithe and Wear // Tear are all also valuable targets we can fetch with it. It is the single most versatile card in this deck, and a saving grace if we draw it.

  2. Aetherflux Reservoir: This is an auto include. With lifelink on our instants and sorceries, we will be gaining lots and lots and lots of life. Pour the ammunition into an Aetherflux Reservoir and we'll be sniping people down in no time.

  3. Treasonous Ogre + Earthquake or Molten Disaster or Comet Storm, etc... : We can pour a lot of life into this ogre for plenty of red mana especially if we're making it all back and more- just make sure to leave enough red for that Red Elemental Blast to avoid a counterspell.

  4. Isochron Scepter + Price of Progress: People love nonbasic lands, just like we do in this deck. With lifelink, we don't need to worry about the damage Price of Progress does to us. But we sure can exile it under the Scepter to use it on each of our turns, maybe even copy it with Reverberate or Fork. With a damage doubler out, this is easy game winning. With Unwinding Clock out on the field we could even do it on each turn, not just our own, provided we have the mana.
