Fiery Red Dragons

Commander / EDH

gallenwolf

Mono Red Dragons, fun casual deck!

This deck is basically ramp, cast dragons and unleash flying death from above!

The bulk of the deck is jam packed with ramp and mana rocks, combined with haste givers, damage doublers and triggered burn enchantments.

Zirilan of the Claw won't be cast unless I have either the Tel-Jilad Stylus or Sundial of the Infinite in play, or if I have no good cards to play (then I'll bring him up to one-shot dragons around the board).

Key Dragons:

  • Utvara Hellkite the bomb of the deck, ideally cast from hand. Every time it or another dragon attacks, the triggered ability creates a 6/6 flyer. With extra combat steps from Scourge of the Throne or Hellkite Charger, imagine the number of dragons hanging around. Now if there was an extra combat step combined with haste enablers...
  • Steel Hellkite I still haven't included it in enough decks yet. 5/5 flyer for 6 that will wipe most token armies in a single hit if they can't stop it. Also super useful to remove annoying enchantments, one of mono red's glaring weaknesses.
  • Hellkite Tyrant All your artifacts are mine! Hoard-Smelter Dragon is also focused artifact removal.
  • Dragon Tyrant when you absolutely need to HULK SMASH

Deck issues:

  • Inconsistent: Some days I can get a dragon out turn 3, some days... I just keep drawing buffing enchantments and support cards but no dragons!
  • Card draw: A mono red thing, midly mitigated by Staff of Nin and a few other spells. I really need to get one of those Chandra planeswalkers that wheels and refills your hand. I used to run Reforge the Soul but it appears that, more often that not, helps the table, and doesn't improve your political standing unlike a proper hug deck.

More of a note to myself, it's not always the best idea to play the most damaging dragon even if there is nothing to block 'em. This evening played against an infect Xenagos deck. The table didn't know it was infect.

Early on, I thought this was the best ramp I'd ever have with this deck - sol ring on turn one, worn powerstone etc. However, all of the table's enchantments and artifacts were gone when the Xenagos player played Bane of Progress. With only five lands in play, I was like.... (*@&# it, time to exile dragons. Played Zirilan, then Crucible of Fire, then used Zirilan to bring in Dragon Tyrant.

Pumped Tyrant with the last red mana i had, then swung at the Xanagos player with a 10/9 double striking flyer. OUCH.

Next turn, the Xanagos player cast Putrefax, and used Xenagos's ability to double its power, and it was swung at me for 10 infect. Game over!

Next few rounds, he cast Blightsteel Colossus, and used Chandra's Ignition to gg the rest of the table lol.

Bottom line, I really should not give in to my tendencies to drop in Dragon Tyrant (he's fun!), but rather bring in Utvara Hellkite - it's do half the damage, sure, but it replaces itself with a 6/6 flyer that could have been used to block Putrefax. Had I known it was an infect deck, I would have tried to keep up a few mana so I could have used Worldgorger Dragon to avoid instant death.

Good fun, learnt lots!
