Maybeboard

This is a brand new, super fun pauper deck for you to check out! I got the bones of the deck from the UG list found here.

The reason I chose to go into white was strictly for access to Circle of Protection: Red in the sideboard. This deck wouldn't otherwise do much against burn, and with Muddle the Mixture, we can win most post board games. There're enough cantrips to dig, and cards to stall to justify running 3 colors, since we don't always need 3 colors.

The goal of the deck is to get a few lands down and start playing fogs every turn for the rest of the game. Once you can, you'll want to drop down Jace's Erasure to start milling your opponent. Your cheeky "Draw 3" cards will really take chunks out of the opponents deck at that point.

There are 30 instants in this deck, which just feels right. You do almost everything during your opponent's turn, and what they do doesn't matter. The way magic should be ;)

So let's get to the deck breakdown:

----------------------------CREATURES----------------------------

  • None. Fog creatures exist, but I wouldn't recommend them. You can only play them on your turn, and they turn on your opponent's otherwise dead removal.

--------------------------------FOGS--------------------------------

  • Fog: Obviously! The basis of the deck and the archetype. 1 mana: prevent all combat damage!

  • Undergrowth : Strictly extra fogs. The secondary effect doesn't matter. 1 mana: prevent all combat damage.

  • Moment's Peace : The best fog in the deck. Has flashback, so it's 2 fogs in 1.

  • Respite : Good card. In the earlier, aggro turns, it basically counts as 2 turns. Toward the late game, when the opponent's only swinging enough to kill you, it's lifegain clause is less relevant.

  • Dawn Charm: This card is very versatile. It's a white fog, but it's also a counterspell for something like Lightning Bolt if need be. It's in my off color, and I've been happy with just 1.

  • Riot Control : Just a strict upgrade to Respite . Prevent all damage, and gain life for all creatures! It's a 1 of for the same reason Dawn Charm is. White is a very small splash.

----------------------------CANTRIPS----------------------------

  • Brainstorm: Arguably the best cantrip in the deck! 1 mana draw 3 means Jace's Erasure hits HARD. It's good for digging to more fogs, or counterspell effects if the time is right. Putting things back is usually irrelevant given all of my "Draw 2" effects..

  • Words of Wisdom : It's basically 2 mana draw 2 at instant speed. Letting your opponent draw cards only matters against burn or control, which we can usually handle post-board. Otherwise, it just gets us closer to that sweet victory.

  • Vision Skeins : Just an amplified version of Words of Wisdom . Letting the opponent draw 2 is either worse or better, depending on how relevant your opponents cards are.

  • Compulsive Research: another "Draw 3" effect for our erasure. By the late game, we have plenty of lands to pitch anyway, since we don't need more than about 6.

  • Ponder: A very powerful magic card. Helps set us up for the next couple turns, or get rid of potential bad draws. Also can get rid of duds put back from Brainstorm. 2 Feels like plenty.

  • Oona's Grace : This card's an all star in this deck. Turns our late game lands into useful mill engines that replace themselves. I've considered upping the count, but one isn't bad by all means.

-------------------------COUNTERSPELLS-------------------------

-----------------------THE WIN CONDITION-----------------------

  • Jace's Erasure : This card makes the deck work. It ensures our opponent decks themselves before we do. It stacks, so getting multiples out and casting a Brainstorm or 2 usually puts away the game cleanly. It's the only nonland permanent in the main board, but opponents don't often have answers to enchantments. Just remember your triggers!
