Welcome to an in-the-making primer for Feather, the Redeemed . The deck is a journey for me as it is for my 6yo daughter. This will be her first deck for MTG.

Please hit the "Upvote" if you enjoy the deck, and show support for the only true Boros Guild Leader.

As soon as Feather, the Redeemed was spoiled, she made me just about as excited as when Lazav, the Multifarious was.

Before this past iteration of Ravnica, the lore of such was not that appealing to me. My goodness though, with all of these new Commanders, it had me wondering about who these characters are, where they came from and what they stand for.

Before WAR and before Aurelia allowed Feather to fly among the Firemane Angels, Boros cared about combat and extra combat phases. The colors lacked the draw of other color combinations and if you slipped behind, you likely would not be able to recover.

All of a sudden, these multitudes of "target creature" that are one, two and three mana that you would never believe to be worth in EDH, become golden because of Feather. Let's dive right in to Feather's hidden agenda for Commander!

Feather won't be flashy, she won't blow out the game turn 3, but what she does well is allow you to recycle each instant and sorcery that targets a creature you control. Also, she has a nice interaction with Keyword Abilities like Aftermath, Flashback, Jump-Start. Feather provides a replacement exile that allows you to choose which exile will happen, essentially bringing them back to hand. While there aren't any cards with those Keyword Abilities I would consider putting in deck atm, I do however love two cards that allow us to recycle from cards that are already in our graveyard.

Recycle Tech:

  • Dreadhorde Arcanist for what we are doing I would liken it's worth in our deck to Snapcaster Mage in any spellslinger blue deck. Arcanist allows for an attack trigger that allows you to cast an instant **OR** sorcery less than or equal to his power WITHOUT paying the mana cost, then exiling it.
  • Past in Flames to give not one recycle but a potential second one as it has Flashback stapled on itself. **This has been taken out of the deck.**
  • Sevinne's Reclamation allows us to have the versatility of getting any permanent CMC 3 or less. So if you need to land ramp to catch up, this is your go to. Also copying it or it's flashback with Primal Wellspring is spicy.

Cantrips:

1 CMC:

2 CMC:

Cantrips are spells that replace themselves usually making them a +0 card advantage (subsequently referred to CA) instead of a spells usual -1 CA.

Cantrips are Feather's bread and butter, and instead of them giving +0 CA, with Feather's ability each cantrip will likely give you +3 CA or more through the course of it's lifetime. Moreso if you can recycle it with Dreadhorde Arcanist , Past in Flames or Sevinne's Reclamation .

Once you get Feather's draw engine started up, know that having multiples of these cards in hand will be redundant.

"The safest place for you is not now." - Teferi

Teferi said it best.

EOT Flicker: End of turn (subsequently referred to as EOT) flicker. Through testing I can honestly say without havinga copious amount of ETB effect creatures, I would rather have protection and indestructible effects to protect my board.

3 CMC:

Instant Flicker: Instant flicker will usually be used to blink in an ETB effect or save your creatures from single target removal.

1 CMC:

  • Ephemerate
  • replaced Cloudshift with this as it is just strictly better.

Teferi's Greatest Gift: When all hope is lost and someone casts that game ending board wipe, cast this from your hand, or search it out with Sunforger . Don't be caught unprepared. There is a reason why this card's price tag is what it is. It saves you games.

3 CMC:

LASTING Indestructible:

3 CMC:

  • Bastion Protector
  • a +2/+2 and indestructible buff to your commander is nothing to scoff at 3 CMC.

EOT Indestructible: is the second best form of protection in most cases. It protects from "destroy" effects as well as combat.

1 CMC:

  • Ajani's Presence
  • An indestructible that you can spread to other places by itself. Not much else to say than it's a solid include.

2 CMC:

EOT Protection: is the best form of protection in most cases. It protects from targeted effects as well as combat.

This section deserves it's own introduction. The goal of a turn 3 Feather is to have one white mana open to hold a protection clause. Most of Feather's enemies will realize that if you leave her open after the turn she comes out it's quite difficult to remove her. So it's imperitive to have that extra source of white mana.

At the inception of this deck, I often had 3 CMC mana rocks, the problem being that Feather herself was a turn 3 play. I don't necessarily want her to come down earlier because we aren't an aggro deck as aggro decks go. We can't close the game the turn she comes out or even the turn after. Feather isn't a sprinter, she's a marathon runner and she plays to stay. Don't over extend, always leave mana enough to cast a protection spell.

Mana Rocks: This section will be listed from least to greatest CMC. You want your mana to be colorful. We only have two colorless rocks. Sol Ring & Thought Vessel

  • Mox Amber
  • This doesn't help get Feather out faster, but it activates when she comes out. Best Mox for her, unless you are sinking the resources for Mox Diamond
  • Sol Ring
  • An EDH staple. It's included because it will usually come out turn 1 and it allows for a turn 1 play for our 2 CMC rocks.
  • Arcane Signet
  • Build-A-Feather workshop. Boros staple.
  • Boros Signet
  • Boros staple no matter how you look at it. Not much else to say.
  • Talisman of Conviction
  • New from Modern Horizons, this is what we needed! Boros staple. Pick up your foils.
  • Thought Vessel
  • We play this for it's benefit for our hand size. The colorless mana is just a plus for mid to late game.

Sunforger Toolkit: This section will be listed from least to greatest CMC. The only thing your enemies will fear more besides Feather, is the hammer she wields.

  • Magnetic Theft
  • This will usually be your first Sunforger activation. This spell will pay for itself most of the time the turn it comes out. It can also have the extra benefit of stealing your opponent's wares.
  • Apostle's Blessing
  • Save this for when Sunforger is the target. Sunforger is a great engine and protecting it is key. We can get it back later with our recursion.
  • Eerie Interlude
  • Our ultimate GTFO card for our army. Any creature wrath this is a good choice if our board is already established. And with Feather it will come back to us.
  • Teferi's Protection
  • When all is lost, this is our answer.

Misc:

  • Scroll of the Masters
  • This rewards us for what we already do. Our enemies will forget about it until we use it out of nowhere.
  • Veilstone Amulet
  • Hexproof. Another reward, this one that costs nothing extra past it's casting cost, for what we are already doing.
  • Aetherflux Reservoir
  • Gaining life, one spell at a time. Once you get past the cusp of 50 life, you will be able to make alliances just by sparing their life. "The enemy of my enemy..."

Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker + Restoration Angel :

Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker + Village Bell-Ringer :

Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker + Zealous Conscripts :

If attempting the Kiki kill, tutor the Bell-Ringer as he's the less likely to trigger your opponents hate. Once your enemies see Kiki the clock is on.

Above Combo Setups:

  • Grand Abolisher
  • I'm including this card as a set up piece as this allows us to combo off on our turn without worries of repercussions. If you're playing against a lot of counter magic this is a great include for the combo mentioned above. Tutorable.
  • Imperial Recruiter
  • Recruiter of the Guard
  • Sneak Attack
  • If this is on the board and either the setups or the actual combo is in hand, this will make short work of your enemies. Keep in mind to blink the non-token creature to keep from saccing at EoT.

Updates Add

This update I'm looking to streamline the deck and attempting to make better use of the search targeters as well as replacing potatoes that usually just sit in the hand, but first let's talk about the "Temporary Replacements" update from June 2nd. This update I'm looking to streamline the deck and attempting to make better use of the search targeters as well as replacing potatoes that usually just sit in the hand, but first let's talk about the "Temporary Replacements" update from June 2nd.

  1. I took out the baby Heroics in attempt to grab a more control style variant. They just didn't do what they needed to with our lack of pumps.
  2. Fell the Mighty was a potato at 5 CMC. I feel Impact Resonance has tested positively and has secured it's spot in the main board.
  3. War's Toll tested positively, but was quickly replaced by Aria of Flame. It may make it's way back in.
  4. Rally the Righteous I'm holding out hope for this card as the top end of it is game ending, but it being 3 CMC is a major drawback.
  5. Leave / Chance is staying main baord.

Now on to today's.

  1. -1 Lumbering Battlement / +1 Generous Gift- Axing a potato to bring in white's Beast Within.
  2. -1 Zealous Conscripts / +1 Guttersnipe - Axing a potato to put back an alternate wincon. Guttersnipe is a heavy hitter and deserves his spot.
  3. -1 Cloudshift / +1 Ephemerate - Without Conscripts, we're replacing it for value.
