The Tragedy of Daxos and Elspeth

Daxos of Meletis was a human soldier and an oracle of Heliod, God of the Sun living at the temple compound in Meletis on Theros. He became the friend, mentor and lover of Elspeth Tirel.

Elspeth met Daxos when she first journeyed to Theros, at the time she had witnessed a battle between Heliod and Purphoros and had taken the Sword of Chaos when it was knocked to the mortal world from Purphoros's hand.

When Elspeth returned to Theros ten years later she encountered Polukranos, World Eater, a massive hydra which had slain countless warriors. Elspeth engaged the hydra with the help of Daxos, and succeeded where many had failed, slaying it. This feat of heroism secured her place at the temple of Heliod as the god's champion. Months passed as Elspeth, Sun's Champion learned what the priests of Heliod had to teach, but mostly she found she enjoyed the time spent with Daxos.

Together, alone in their tent, Daxos and Elspeth finally realized their feelings for each other. But it was not to be. Xenagos appeared as they slept, thrilled with how well she followed his plan. He controlled her and brought back her darkest memory, trapped with the Phyrexian Obliterator, striking out and killing it... only realizing too late that she had just killed Daxos.

Cast out, she found an unexpected ally in the Leonin. With the help of Brimaz, King of Oreskos she reunited with her old friend Ajani Goldmane. He was curious of what had befallen her, but she refused to speak of how badly she'd been hurt. Instead, she swore they would set things right, and Ajani agreed to stay at her side. To do so, they would have to travel to the mysterious temple of Kruphix at the edge of the world.

They arrived at the edge of the world, and the god Kruphix allowed them to pass to the gateway of Nyx, the shrine of Nykthos. To gain entry to Nyx, Elspeth had to undergo an ordeal sent from the gods, and Ajani urged Elspeth to take Thassa's ordeal, but she pulled away from him at the last moment and gained entry from Erebos, God of the Dead.

They confronted Xenagos and battled the god. Elspeth defeated Xenagos, stabbing him with Godsend in the first ever Deicide. As Xenagos' body fell back to Theros, Elspeth offered her life in a trade for Daxos, a deal Erebos took gladly.

When Xenagos had achieved his apotheosis, Heliod was quick to blame Elspeth, and once again tried to kill her, and failed. His hatred and jealousy of Elspeth increased, and to make matters worse he came to understand what a Planeswalker was, fearing that she could rise to godhood like Xenagos and threaten his power. So he waited for the right chance, and struck when Elspeth was exhausted after her final battle with Xenagos. He glared his blinding light, taking Godsend away from her and stabbing her with it, taunting her in a final desire to humiliate his own champion as she died.

Now, Daxos was freed from the Underworld. He is Daxos the Returned, traveling across Theros in an endless search for his beloved Elspeth Tirel — but she has taken his place in the realm of the dead.
