Maybeboard

Lately I've been getting into building decks around cards that generally get overlooked, like Leyline of Singularity , and Esper Stormblade with Knight of New Alara etc. It has been really interesting finding interactions and combos with cards that were not necessarily meant to work that way, and one card that jumped out at me was Braid of Fire. While it is typically useless in a run of the mill ramp deck given that the mana is added during the upkeep, there are ways around this. The goal of the deck is to use the mana produced from Braid of Fire to cast as many spells as possible, all while collecting green mana for Omnath, Locus of Mana. Continue reading for a more detailed explanation of my card choices by category.
Omnath, Locus of Mana: While it has no direct interactions with Braid of Fire, it combos wonderfully with Prophet of Kruphix by allowing us to tap all our green lands twice per turn. It also has a nice interaction with Doubling Cube, and Manamorphose can turn some of the red mana from Braid of Fire into green all while drawing a card. Needless to say, this guy can get very big very fast.

Kruphix, God of Horizons: Has a much better interaction with Braid of Fire allowing us to keep all the mana produced. Although it converts it to colorless mana, it is still useful for Comet Storm, Train of Thought and simply casting spells without tapping lands.

Each card in this category (except Seedborn Muse) can be played at instant speed to take advantage of the mana from Braid of Fire.

Chord of Calling: Allows me to tutor all creatures in the deck (Summoner's Pact can't target Bogardan Hellkite).

Comet Storm: This card is more or less our secondary wincon as well as a decent source of removal. A late game Comet Storm is often lethal with Braid of Fire.

Lightning Bolt: The most commonly used red spell in modern for good reason, 3 damage for at instant speed just can't be beat. I usually like to keep them for the end of the game to deal lethal damage to the face unless I need it for removal.

Manamorphose: Is a useful card in this deck as it allows us to use the red mana from Braid of Fire to either cast a non-red spell or to simply convert it to green for Omnath, Locus of Mana. Of course it also has the added benefit of drawing us a card.

Seedborn Muse: Has a similar effect to Prophet of Kruphix but also untaps Doubling Cube.

Summoner's Pact: Allows us to search for the right creature and the price is payed at the next upkeep, so Braid of Fire can be used to help pay.

Bogardan Hellkite: Is a big Dragonlord Atarka like dragon but with flash.

Prophet of Kruphix: Gives our other creatures flash so they can be played using Braid of Fire. It also untaps our lands so we can tap them for green mana twice per turn, effectively growing Omnath, Locus of Mana twice as fast.

Savage Summoning: Lets us play our creatures that don't have flash using mana from Braid of Fire. It also screws over counterspells, and it gives an additional +1/+1 counter. All in all, this card is the perfect fit for this deck.

Snapcaster Mage: Do I really need an explanation for the greatest blue creature that has ever been printed for modern?

Surrak Dragonclaw: Can be played using Braid of Fire, gives Omnath, Locus of Mana (and all other creatures) trample, and it screws over counterspells.

Braid of Fire: Should be obvious, gives an increasing amount of red mana as the game goes on.

Doubling Cube: Can exponentially grow Omnath, Locus of Mana and the mana created from Braid of Fire.

In this pannel I would like to go over a couple of the cards in the sideboard, and explain some of the choices I made when leaving cards out.

Cyclonic Rift: Can be a great sideboard option against any deck that builds up the board a lot.

Izzet Staticaster: Works as an effective method of removing tokens and can be played at instant speed.

Leyline of Anticipation: Allows all our spells to be cast with braid of fire, but can be difficult to cast if not in the opening hand.

Finally, I chose to leave out cards like Upwelling and Magus of the Vineyard that help out our opponents, and cards like Savage Ventmaw or Mark of Sakiko whose mana still empties at the end of turn. The last card that I'm still hesitating on is Mind Bend . While it cannot change the red mana symbol on Braid of Fire to green, it can change the text of Omnath, Locus of Mana to say that red mana doesn't empty from the mana pool. Because this card really only interacts in a noticeable way with Omnath, I'm not sure this combo would be all that worth it (opinions on this are very appreciated).

Thanks for looking at my deck, please leave a comment if you liked it or suggestions if you have any, and as always votes are very appreciated.

Last but not least, thanks to NewHorizons for Kruphix, God of Horizons.
