Estrid's Authority - STAX Enchantress

Commander / EDH

Cryomancer

Welcome to Enchantress STAX!

For those who do not know about the stax or enchantress deck themes, more information about them is available down below. This deck is aimed at a more so competitive commander game or group of players and I welcome any and all forms of criticism for this deck... meaning that if you have card suggestions or any questions, you are free to ask about them or state your opinion(s) on my card choices and I'll do my best to explain why a card is there or why it might be better than some of the alternatives.

Why Choose Estrid?

The Commander 2018 product brought many interesting legendary creatures and planeswalkers to the game, and I believe that Estrid is one of the more interesting commanders that the product gave us. She leads this deck because I think Estrid is one of, if not the best, generals to make this strategy effective for competitive games.

You Might Like This Strategy if:

  • You enjoy grinding out your opponents and slowing down the game
  • You like playing enchantments for high benefits
  • You don't care for having a large board presence most of the time

You Might Not Like This Strategy if:

  • You hate having longer games
  • You want as many creatures as possible every turn
  • You don't care about playing enchantments

Breaking Down The Deck: The Core Themes

Stax refers to playing cards (most commonly artifacts) that slow down the game's pace by restricting the uses of certain cards or shutting down entire strategies. For example, Winter Orb slows down the game by restricting the amount of lands each player untaps and can ruin the day of a deck that want to get as many lands out onto the battlefield as quickly as possible.
Enchantress is typically is a catch-all term for cards that reward you for playing enchantments by providing certain benefits, most commonly saying "Whenever you cast and enchantment, draw a card" although some cards cause other effects like Herald of the Pantheon gaining life and reducing the cost of playing enchantment spells.
To understand why our commander compliments these tactics so well, Let's take a closer look at her abilities:

+2: Untap each enchanted permanent you control; This ability is perfect for us because we can reuse our enchanted lands, untap our enchanted creature to let us block, and give us options to use some of our 'shut down' stax pieces like the Orbs if they had to enter the battlefield tapped.

-1: Create a white Aura enchantment token named Mask attached to another target permanent. The token has enchant permanent and totem armor; For those who don't know, Totem Armor means if the enchanted permanent would be destroyed, instead we can sacrifice whatever had Totem Armor. This is great for protecting key cards that someone else might have an answer to, but it doesn't save the card if the card enchanted was sacrificed to an effect.

-7: Put the top seven cards of your library into your graveyard. Return all non-Aura enchantment cards from your graveyard to the battlefield, then do the same for Aura cards; Acting as a Replenish works wonders for this deck, primarily if we just had a massive blowout like someone destroying all enchantments on the battlefield. Keep in mind if a card such as card:Rest in Piece is on the battlefield, however, or you'll be very disappointed afterwards.

Obviously, my build isn't the only way to play Estrid, there are many cards that I'm not currently playing because I couldn't find room for them ( Damping Sphere , Grafdigger's Cage )or the felt too clunky/awkward in the deck ( Thorn of Amethyst , Energy Field ). Regardless, thanks for visiting the list and feel free to leave your suggestions and comments down below. There's a finite amount of fun to he had... trust me, play this deck and you'll have all of it.
