Esper Zombies "COMPETITIVE" AMONKHET

Standard Aggro Competitive Tribal W/U/B (Esper) Zombie

clark1424

Description

Amonkhet version description

Yet again, we have to evolve. This deck was converted from dimir to Esper, hence what i can describe as evolution.

The protour has ended! The other archeotype of Zombies dominated the Marvel. I do hate the fact that zombies are now visible in the radar. Everybody is either copying it, or formulating an answer against it. Well, i doubt if they are ready for this.

This deck works by utilizing the same old reliable recursion style while having the reach to kill opponents, grind for tough matchups, exile indestructible permanents, destroy a whole bunch of tokens, deal with resolved enchantments and artifacts, and lastly, to deal with marvel and zombie decks alike.

Anguished Unmaking is hands down the best removal in this block if only this cards won't make us lose 3 life. It's a removal that destroys any non-land and non-hexproof permanent.

Wayward Servant gives the deck what it needs against faster decks that runs . If they do not deal with this card, they'll run out of gas without killing me. It also gives me the ability to reach.

Dread Wanderer is a 1 drop that can recur. It also synergizes with Prized Amalgam and Wayward Servant.

Declaration in Stone is just awesome against gods and tokens. It also gets rid of ulamog.:)

Trespasser's Curse is hands down a mono black zombie stabilizer. They die on this card with their own Diregraf Colossus, makes Relentless Dead's ability to be less effective since they will have to think twice before having a zombie enter the battlefield, and lastly Cryptbreaker will be checked. MBZ decks does not have a way to gain life and a way to destroy enchantments (unless thay have Lost Legacy)

Pre-Amonkhet Updated description

Since we lost Smuggler's Copter, i thought the deck won't be as competitive as before. Thanks to mtggoldfish.com, i found a way and idea to make this work since the meta relies heavily on creatures and that removal is the key in making a deck competitive.

Well, this deck still has the capability to explode in turn 3, I added 10 removal spells to deal with threats that are being played from early to late game. Fatal Push is just amazing in this deck. I can use Haunted Dead's ability to recur, block with the spirit token and remove a threat that is 4 to cast and below because of revolt ability.

Combat tricks here are everywhere! I can cast Compelling Deterrence to my creature being targeted with Unlicensed Disintegration and cast a Voldaren Pariah's madness cost with . 5th turn here is where most combos happen and it's this deck's strongest point in the curve (provided) i did not miss a land drop til turn 5.

Against control decks, this deck has the resiliency in the main deck and thanks to 4 Scrapheap Scrounger in the sideboard, we can have more resiliency. Transgress the Mind works marvelously against Copy-cat decks. Same goes with To the Slaughter and Distended Mindbender. I was in doubt to add a copy of Collective Brutality and 2 copies of Key to the City since they will just make me slower in the opening turns. Though Collective Brutality seems great against control decks and i might board in 2 of in and sideboard some removal and remove 2 Transgress the Mind. But to think that it will not affect decks like 4c saheeli, i'd rather not.

Against other aggro decks, we have a BUNCH of removal that they will have to deal with. Not to mention the 4 main board Voldaren Pariah that acts as a pseudo board wipe against them.

Originally, I planned on not including producing lands, but i thought that i might have a turn where i want to cast an amalgam rather than just making them a bonus for activating Haunted Dead's ability. Also, Compelling Deterrence seems nice to cast against decks with stupid enchantments like Quarantine Field and Stasis Snare or planeswalkers like nissa or gideon. If they don't have a card in their hand, it's acts as a removal if i have a zombie in play.

Question and answer portion!!!

Q: Why no Lost Legacy?

A: Because of stupid artifact theme this block has. I'd rather have 4 transgress than 3:1 with lost legacy

Q: How do you deal with enemy Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet

A: Count the number of removal spells I have, that will solve him 95% of the time

Q: How do you deal with Aetherworks Marvel decks?

A: To the Slaughter sure kills ulamog. Mini removal suite kills small creatures. And ofc, with speed by adding scrounger to the mix plus Distended Mindbender to make them discard some nasty stuff. Also, Adding transgress the mind will most likely delay them further into getting another copy of marvel. But once it's out, well... Let's pray that they don't get an Ulamog since they're most likely to trigger Kozilek's Return with it.

Q: How about post board strategy against decks with flaying tendrils?

A: Well... that's a problem that i think only if Voldaren Pariah is in my hand that i can solve it since i lack counter spells.

Q: Against mardu vehicles?

A: I have enough removal spells to delay them further into my kill range

Q: What's this deck's worst nightmare?

A: A resolved Lost Legacy, early Flaying Tendrils, very early ulamog, unchecked Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet and a STUPID FOG DECK.

Q: What's the best match up for this deck?

A: Most creature decks that and control decks that heavily rely on counter spells.

If you want to read my old description, It's just right below.=)

IF YOU'RE ABOUT TO SAVE THIS IN YOUR FOLDER, AT LEAST GIVE IT AN UPVOTE.=)

This is how I play this deck.

1st to play:

Play Smuggler's Copter or pass the turn then discard Haunted Dead with "cb's"(Cryptbreaker's) ability in your opponent's combat phase to have a 2/2 zombie block an attacker or in his/her end step if not attacking.
Cast Liliana, the Last Hope or pass the turn then in his combat or 2nd main phase, recur Haunted Dead while discarding Prized Amalgam to have them come back in your opponent's end step.
Cast Mindwrack Demon/Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet or cast removal spells for safety.
If i played copter on turn 4, make him attack then draw and discard Voldaren Pariah. Before turn 6, ill probably make sure to open up the battle field by sacrificing 2 tokens (zombie and spirit) plus probably Haunted Dead (back to the graveyard where you want her to be) to transform pariah into Abolisher of Bloodlines  Flip .

In playing "on the draw"

i like passing up my turn to discard Haunted Dead
passing my turn on turn 3 to appear weak (take them damages if you have to), then recurring Haunted Dead while discarding 2 Prized Amalgams so i can have them all untapped in the next turn ready to attack for 10 total damage.
Cast removal spells like Grasp of Darkness, Collective Brutality (also escaleted to peek on my opponent's cards in hand and remove a removal spell of his/hers) and/or Dark Salvation

Main win conditionTHE ZOMBIES ARE COMMING!- Overwhelm opponent with creatures as early as possible

Alternate win conditions:

I'm totally having problems in dealing in decks with board wipes. So i think, with the addition of Smuggler's Copter and Lost Legacy, i can have a chance against this type of decks.

If you're looking for more creative ways to get Haunted Dead into and out of your graveyard, you can try playing Gisa and Geralf. That's what I do in my Undead deck.

October 1, 2016 2:35 p.m.

Brofessor_X says... #9

Also, Collective Brutality is nice for the "discard" and madness combos, but you may find you enjoy Sinister Concoction more for removal. It's super cheap too.

id like to choose which card im discarding. Imagine milling liliana, wharf and any other spell.:P. Thats the reason why i dont use gisa and geralf or any cards that has a milling ability. I do mill with liliana but only in emergancy.

I like what you've got going here ... I've borrowed a couple ideas to make my zombies better, so +1 from me =)

I've noticed the times I've played Dark Salvation that I'm dropping 7 mana just to get three zombie tokens which has been a bit frustrating. From Under the Floorboards gets you the same number of zombies for only 5 mana (5 zombies using the madness costs for the same price as Dark Salvation). The -x/-x would be better if you could, again, spend more mana ... but Grasp does a much better job of getting rid of creatures IMO (which you already have in this deck). Gisa's Bidding is another option for zombie tokens.

How has Dark Salvation worked for you so far?

October 16, 2016 11:12 a.m.

clark1424 says... #12

Thank you Obial for the upvote and for the comment.:)

Well, Dark Salvation worked fine for me so far. There was an instance mid game that i only have 2 of it in hand and my opponent casts Transgress the Mind and he can't exile one of them lol. There's also this instance that i played against spirit deck and kept on Spell Quellering my grasp of darkness so when i cast dark salvation for , the 3rd queller can't counter it and made me do a chain of killing them spirits. I love that card. It's a 2 for 1 card. Good against aggro to control. It can kill and at the same time, it can generate zombies or both!.:D. Also, works fine with Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet and Liliana, the Last Hope's ultimate.:)

I did use the Gisa's Bidding\From Under the Floorboards woth Wharf Infiltrator. The deck is fast but is weak vs decks with board wipe. Too bad they're not instant cards and Torrential Gearhulk can't recast them. Also, they're just good for generating zombies and that's it.

Maybe i'll consider putting in 2 From Under the Floorboards since i have both wharf and copter.:).

I appreciate your suggestions man.:)

October 16, 2016 12:59 p.m.

Obial says... #13

I figured there were good reasons for keeping Dark Salvation over the others ... just hadn't run in to any of them myself yet, so I appreciate your feedback there: very valid points!

I'm a frequenter of using Transgress the Mind so I'm a little embarrassed I didn't think of that practical reason myself haha

Keep it up!

The only blue spell you can, but do not want to cast, is Prized Amalgam. I don't think B/U is the way to go for Zombies anymore, I'd rather look towards the other colors for this deck. It's pretty meta to run Red now to play with Madness and Discard, and it makes a lot of sense here as well.

October 25, 2016 5:43 a.m.

clark1424 says... #16

Was honestly thinking about that but since i can always put in Wharf Infiltrator and some counter spells, i still stay as dimir.

This deck looks awesome. But is it worth playing Scrapheap Scrounger?

November 13, 2016 6:52 a.m.

clark1424 says... #18

Yes OFC!.=). Just exile creatures like cryptbreaker or anyone if you are going for the kill in your next turn. They can also trigger Prized Amalgam just like Haunted Dead or Relentless Dead. Catch your opponent with surprise and poof... you win.=)

gamer.ray Oh ok, thanks!

November 26, 2016 5:59 p.m.

clark1424 says... #22

Ackemdeil thank you for the upvote!

Haunted Dead beacause of combat tricks like:

  1. When your opponent attacks, you can recur haunted dead and block with the spirit

  2. If you have Smuggler's Copter in the battlefield, you can use the spirit for crewing

  3. Discard Voldaren Pariah  Flip and pay madness... then transform if you have enough creatures

  4. As what gamer.ray said; for westvale abbey

Beautiful deck my friend definitely gave me a lot to think about there are obviously a of BA blue zombies I've not Just not been having any luck with multi color lately takes a lot of the math work and stress away I know what land I'll pull. Plus my goal since I started playing magic has been to make a dominant mono black.but it looks like you got it down pat.My only 2 cents would be maybe Corpse Churn and Macabre Waltz to combo the madness maybe even Sanitarium Skeleton just because I feel like in that deck you could cycle the hell out of it. But like they say if it ain't broke don't fix it. You've given me a lot to think about much appreciated

November 28, 2016 8:05 a.m.

clark1424 says... #25

AthestAbashi actually another BU zombie deck joined a major event here and won the first place with a prize of $1000. Well, it pissed me off actually since people were looking to compete for decks like Flash, vehicles and the likes... and now, i'm in the radar lol.

Well, for Corpse Churn, i actually thought about it but since i can always play Liliana, the Last Hope, she's already a permanent with a built in churn.

As for Macabre Waltz, I'd like to add it if I'm playing more madness in my deck. But since Voldaren Pariah  Flip is the only card with madness here, i don't think i can maximize the card.

Actually, dual color is quite simple. Just go get some dual lands and you're set.:).

I'm glad to know that i my list helped you for some more idea. You can also do zombies. Its a lot faster than this. I jist dont want to get rid of negate that's why i stick with this color.:)

My advice for you is not to think of zombies too much and do think of an ability you wish to stick into like in zombies, recursion.

I actually like to add Relentless Dead here again but i don't it's a good idea against faster decks.

November 28, 2016 12:09 p.m.

clark1424 says... #26

I also tried putting Sanitarium Skeleton back then. It is great with Haunted Dead and Wharf Infiltrator. But since now i'm using copter, there's no need for me to use it anymore.

November 28, 2016 12:15 p.m.

poshakitoo says... #27

Just one thing Flaying Tendrils really brokes your game, cuz if the creature would die, it's exiled, so Zulaport Cutthroat effect won't trigger, at least i understand it this way, am i correct?

Nice deck, i have everything but the lilianas :c, hope to you make it very far

November 29, 2016 5:17 p.m.

clark1424 says... #28

Creatures die first then become exiled since it's a negative counter.:)

Zomtar says... #32

I literally run the same type of deck except I run 4x Relentless Dead and not 4x Scrapheap Scrounger . Why would Scrapheap Scrounger be better? I usually use Relentless Dead put it back in my hand and pay 1 to bring back Cryptbreaker to crew the Smuggler's Copter. "Always have zombies on the field after a board wipe"

December 4, 2016 12:53 p.m.

Crusaderjb says... #33

Love the deck. I run a very similar deck but I run contingency plan instead of negate. I moved negate to the side board. What are your thoughts on contingency plan in this deck?

December 4, 2016 1:55 p.m.

clark1424 says... #34

Zomtar. I use scrounger because i can recur it after my opponent's turn ready to attack next turn for 3 damage. Yes relentless dead can do that, but once milled by Mindwrack Demon, i cant put him back on the battlefield. Also, if i have 1 Cryptbreaker and 7 mana, o can discard pariah and return scrounger and have her flip. Yes it can be done by Haunted Dead but i want other options as well. Another thing is, if liliana tlh uses 1st ability on relentless dead, it cant crew a vehicle.

December 4, 2016 6:23 p.m.

clark1424 says... #35

Crusaderjb. I like how Contingency Plan works. But it wont give you another card in your hand. Yes it smoothens the draw but i like to counter spells like Aetherworks Marvel, Gideon, Ally of Zendikar and Always Watching . Not to mention all vehicles.:). Soooo... i choose counters over contingency instead.

December 4, 2016 6:26 p.m.

clark1424 says... #36

I've played Relentless Deads countless of times. To be honest, if only i have upgraded my account, you can see my revision that the card is in and out of my deck. I've seen it's good side and it's bad side. I can say that it is a great card. But against Liliana and control decks, i don't think it's worth using right now. Creatures = speed, spells = defense. That's my game logic when it comes to aggro.

December 4, 2016 8:11 p.m.

clark1424 says... #37

Crusaderjb and also, there's no deck right now that negate is not useful. Even in RB aggro/zombie (negate Cathartic Reunion) and RG energy (negate Blossoming Defense) decks this can be used as a win card.

December 4, 2016 8:16 p.m.

Flaying Tendrils does ruin the plan. The creatures don't die, then exile. Tendrils replaces the "die" part with exile. Same with kalitas. So Zulaport Cutthroat and Relentless Dead don't do their thing

happygilmore511 if you're looking at my update notes, you can see that it is inconsistent with my main and sideboard. Yes, I've realized and asked a judge about it. It's also the reason why i put 2 mainboard negate in this deck.:)

December 5, 2016 2:15 a.m.

Ze_Geuse81 says... #41

i like the idea of recursion in the deck but it's pretty inconsistent I've play-tested it a few time and the lack of consistent draws really kills it for me. Would you not rather play 3 Liliana, the Last Hope and 3 Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet also i would definitely play 3 copies of Grasp of Darkness main board also you might want to consider playing two copies of Negate main board since there are a ton of planeswalkers in the meta and Gideon, Ally of Zendikar is a major threat and hope to deal with opposing lili's . them's my two cents hope it was constructive enough fer ya.. :)

December 13, 2016 8:21 a.m.

clark1424 says... #42

Thanks for the comment Ze_Geuse81

Actually, i'd like to play a 3rd copy of Liliana, the Last Hope and a copy of Corpse Churn but it will look exactly like the deck that won $1k in a competitive tournament in our country (lol) or maybe, 2 Corpse Churns. But definitely not a 3rd Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet. I honestly played a lot of decks already and i don't think consistency is an issue. You just have to fill in your graveyard with tools. Regarding 3rd Grasp of Darkness, i would like to add it up but i currently don't have the space in my deck to fit it in. Also, i got 8 removals in this deck already. Sinister Concoction seems to do it's job well against Brisela, Voice of Nightmares and big threats that grasp can't deal with.
