FNM Tournament —Jan. 29, 2017

So, I went to my local Game Store with a couple of friends and this deck all sleeved up. My Jund warriors and beasts were itching to get to the fight, so I let'em loose. We played 3-round Swiss with mediocre prizes. Nevertheless, I was determined to make the deck's first appearance a good one.

Games

Round 1: G/R Energy: This player was running an energy deck with Lightning Runner, Voltaic Brawler, and... Thriving Rhino? Game one he made combat tricky but I was able to smash him flat. Game 2 went a little longer, but my removal was too much for his flimsy creatures. 2-0

Round 2: U/B Improvise: Now this was a neat deck. He played beatdown with cheap artifacts for early Bastion Inventor and Herald of Anguish, but the deck didn't run Tezzeret the Schemer. Game 1 was close, I beat him down early but then Battle at the Bridge for 7 took it's toll. Fortunately, I won with Aethersphere Harvesters smashing from the skies. Game 2 I pretty much shut him down with Release the Gremlins and Natural Obsolescence. 2-0

Round 3: B/G Counters: This wasn't a very streamlined deck and was very scattered. As a result, he had a terrible mana base. Game 1 I stomped him because he couldn't find a second black source, and Game 2 I was really fast and he couldn't get his 3rd land. 2-0

Takeaway

In all, I'm very impressed with the deck's performance, and I finished in first place. It is worth noting that with the 11 two-drops, it's important to know what to cast when. If you know that they're a slow deck, you can make combat difficult for them with T2 Voltaic Brawler. Normally with midrange decks, Winding Constrictor is the way to go. It's also the best blocker against aggro. Glint-Sleeve Siphoner is better played later on because it allows us to draw tons of cards, which we don't need to do early game. Just make sure you play smart, and always have your permanents IN FRONT OF your lands.

I would highly recommend running 4 Longtusk Cub over a few Hellions and Hydras.

This deck is way too slow to be viable.

Interesting opinions! I think Longtusk Cub is strong, but I really love my hydras and hellions. TherosKing444, the idea is not to win super quickly, but rather to get in damage more like a midrange deck. We try to get in a few points of damage early, then try and stay ahead of our opponent. Thank you for the comments!

Ok. Play slow while my vehicle deck swings 23 turn 5.

Galvanic Bombardment is strictly better than Shock.

Actually, I prefer Shock because it disrupts the Saheeli combo and can deal direct damage to the face, while Galvanic Bombardment cannot. However, I appreciate your opinion!

I can see why. I didn't take into account the Saheeli combo. If you're going removal, Galvanic Bombardment is the way to go, but Shock does give the deck more answers.

I dont think there are enough counters going around to really justify play winding constrictor all i see is the bristling hydra

See, Winding Constrictor also says that whenever you get one or more counters, you get an extra counter of that kind. Since cards like Glint-Sleeve Siphoner give YOU , you get an extra . Same goes for poison counters. This means that by attacking every turn with the siphoner, you can turn it into a sort-of Phyrexian Arena. So the Winding Constrictor really does pull a lot of weight.

I think it plays well with shock giving it flex play for disruption and turn one you can put 2E on the board with attune or 1E with Rampager. Turn 2 either Siphoner w/ menace or Brawler with E, then turn 3 you are bringing Lathnu out with haste so swinging for 8 is solid. Winding is a decoction & fabrication module all in the form of a 2/3 creature.
