Hello TappedOut!

My friend, for lack of a better word, is sh*t at deckbuilding. Long explanation aside, I put together a little challenge for him much like what I once did to develop Fire Walk With Me in order to hone his skills as such. Turns out, however, that a lot of the people I talked to about this afterwards thought it sounded hella fun and decided to join in. Therefore, mates, I present to you the Scarbrought93 Deckbuilding Challenge!

So how do you go about this challenge, you may ask? Well let me tell you:

  1. Go to http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Default.aspx

  2. Random into a legendary creature. This will be your general, with a few exceptions.

A. General's you've already built and become aquainted with.

B. Generals that are banned in regular EDH formats

C. Should you random into a special case, EG. Hakkon, Stromgald Scourge, you can either random into another or use this as a higher test of your skill in building a deck. After all, Monoblack is pretty scary with or without commander!

Now on to Deckbuilding itself....

  1. Build a deck around your general. The first time around, you can only use what you know, other people's suggestions, and what you find on sites like gatherer. No netdecking or looking at other decks of the same commander. The idea here is to build a feel for getting initial builld around ideas and subthemes.

  2. After your first game with another player who's built the same way, you may look at other list for suggestions on what you might want to put into the deck.

  3. After seven games, if you feel your commander isn't cutting it in your color, you may find a new commander to fit the deck in the same color. The idea here is that, should you be in an unfamiliar color to you, you be able to practice and attain mastery over an area of the game you have trouble with.

  4. After eleven games, if you just don't feel like you can make any recognizable progress, or if you're ready to start again, you may move onto a new general entirely by repeating step one.

So why do this? Well, a couple reasons. The first and most obvious here being that it helps to provide skill in basic and advanced deck building, making judgment calls, and working over the harder cuts through time. As well, I've found that building through a deck like this leads to a sense of pride and attachment that may just solidify you into keeping the deck as your main play style through time, like rooting for the underdog at your favorite sport. Lastly, it gives the indecisive player a challenge to shoot for in picking what works for them.

Have fun! Comments and feedback appreciated!
