Maybeboard

Hello, hello, hello !

Daxos is here, he returned, he's buffed and he's ready to awaken his (masters) zombies !

The decklist above is the actual brew I'm playing (Kaldheim extension if I haven't update this description). Daxos the Returned is the first EDH deck that I've ever built. It has changed so many many many times before this version, and do not doubt that I will change it again in the future.

Disclaimer : Daxos is not a strong commander and not a strong EDH Deck.

Orzhov is ... not the greatest color combination in EDH and the deck is slow, really slow. This could be solved by playing a pretty heavily staxx brew (Daxos could probably fits better in an higher power-level meta then), but I don't want the players of my pod to threw rocks and greasy pizza boxes at me. :x So, I've created a list that is supposed to be more "control-y" : the goal is always to slow down my opponents, but this will be made by clearing their centerpieces with single target removal cards instead of using snoring machine staxx cards.

This strategy is still less effective, and requires more ressources. But, it tends to less frustrate unknown players and staxx's phobic person, which is good in a social format like casual Commander/EDH. Following that perspective, this control brew tends to enhance the discussions around the table and allows more political mind games. It's that type of slower games that allows Daxos the Returned to shine : he's cheap, he gets better the more the game goes on and he rarelly draws the attention of the table, even when he's a threat.

Besides threat management, this deck can work around two different principal gameplans in order to grab the victory.

  1. The first one is pretty clear when you glance at the commander's abilities : Swarm the board with tokens and swing on the bad guys faces. Thanks to enchantments like Aura of Silence , Banishing Light or Darksteel Mutation , you'll pump your Experience Counters without being really noticed and with the instant speed ability of Daxos the Returned , your fresh tokens won't have to miraculously survive 3 opponent turns before an attack phase (aka the MtG no man's land). Daxos is the primary token generator of the deck, but Heliod, God of the Sun , Ajani's Chosen and Archon of Sun's Grace are good substitutes if your commander's tax hit the ceiling. If opponents also play token-based decks, Doomwake Giant , Heartstone and Anointed Procession will allow you to outnumbered their boards with, hopefully, bigger creatures.

  2. The second gameplan is more tricky : like Exodia in Yu-Gi-Oh !, if you manage to assemble Daxos the Returned + Heartstone + Anointed Procession + Phyrexian Altar + Grim Guardian , together on the board, you have an infinite loop that allow you to ping your opponents to death. The combo is simple : With 1 black mana and 1 white mana, you create two enchantment-creature tokens with Daxos the Returned active ability (cost reduced by Heartstone and token doubled by Anointed Procession ). The ETB will trigger the ability of Grim Guardian two times, who will ping the opponents. You can then sacrifice the tokens with Phyrexian Altar to generate 1 black mana and 1 white mana and restart the loop. This infinite combo requires too many different pieces to be really threatening, but it fits well in a casual pod. Ajani's Chosen , Archon of Sun's Grace , Heliod, God of the Sun and Underworld Coinsmith are replacable pieces in the combo and can help to run it smoother.

Other than your two main game plans, Skybind and Vedalken Orrery are the best cards in your 99. They allow this list to be reactive at instant speed, which is usually really lacking in a Orzhov and/or enchantment deck. So if you don't know what to tutor, they're always good choices. Oh and Overwhelming Splendor is just here to punish annoying players.

I think I've summarized the main points of this brew. Feel free to try it and post a feedback ! Once again, this list his built for a social and casual table, so don't be disappointed if Daxos does nothing against powerhouse deck.

Nonetheless, I hope you plenty of funny EDH games !
