Maybeboard

Back to the drawing board with the newer set releases!

This is a commander ninjutsu deck using the ninja commander. It revolves around using the commander's ability to make the opponent lose life through dealing direct damage with unblock-able creatures.

The cost of the deck has grown, but I made the deck much faster than it was, removing higher-costed items and adding in more rocks or more enablers. Also, if you're having trouble closing out the game, I added in the Doomsday/Thassa's Oracle combo. You want to have at least 3-(U) and 3-(B), casting Doomsday with the 3-(B); you can create the pile in any way you want, but essentially you want Thassa's Oracle and cheap or free draw spells (Gush, Gitaxian Probe, Opt, Street Wraith). You need to trigger Yuriko that turn, or have some way of drawing the first card of the pile to get the combo started. This was included for games where my ninjas could not get through or deal enough damage to close the game out.

With Kamigawa Neon Dynasty on the horizon, the deck will most likely gain new cards to help the speed or damage of the deck.

This is a commander ninjutsu deck using the ninja commander. It revolves around using the commander's ability to make the opponent lose life through dealing direct damage with unblock-able creatures. The sorceries and instants are meant to mitigate enemy damage, control board state, and manipulate our deck for maximum commander effect. We hardly have any blockers or big creatures, so we need other tools to deal with them. We leave several higher costing cards in hopes of hitting it with our commander's ability.

The artifacts we have are a mix of helping our creatures get on the field and attack (haste), make them untargetable (shroud, hexproof). We want to bring out our commander as much as possible and trigger her ability since we can cheat her out (skipping commander tax). We also have some artifacts that will trigger on the commander entering the battlefield (Hero's Blade/Ronin Warclub) to increase the damage output on opponents. Remember that the commander's ability triggers for each opponent. We have Bident of Thassa and Whip of Erebos to keep drawing cards and our life totals up while we chip away. Our enchantments are there to give our creatures the Ninja subtype to help trigger the commander's ability even more as it triggers per ninja who deals combat damage.

A common problem in ninja decks (ninjutsu namely) is the mana base. In order to trigger ninjutsu, we need the first creature's cmc plus the ninjutsu cost plus replaying cmc cost. This causes huge amounts of mana being needed to play ninjutsu creatures. We try to mitigate this problem through low-cost creatures so the 'redeploy' cost will be lowered. We curve on the lower end of 34 lands with some mana accelerators (Dimir Locket, Commander Sphere, Sol Ring, Mox Amber). We also have some cycling lands to help get us through the deck if needed as well as some fetch lands to thin our deck. We don't include any of the expensive fetches because we're trying to be budget (trying, I promise).

A small note: my playgroup allows the global series cards, so if it's illegal where you play, you're welcome to substitute the card for another in the maybe-board (I'd recommend an extra turn card).

The sideboard right now are cards that I would want to put into my deck right now. Any duplicates found in the sideboard are cards I would take out of my main deck for cards in the sideboard that are not duplicates (examples are: Jace's Phantasm and Seekers' Squire being cards I want to take out of my deck; Thief of Sanity and Nightveil Sprite being cards I want to put into my deck).

May/June 2019 Update - In Progress There have been a couple changes since my last update. Right now we are in the Modern Horizon spoiler season, and there are a handful of cards already out that would be beneficial in this deck. First we are removing more expensive creatures (Elusive Tormentor, Notion Thief, Pilgrim's Eye) and adding in some of the new cards. One of the new cards is another unblockable, Changeling Outcast, but is also a ninja (technically a changeling, so it is all types), which will trigger Yuriko's effect whenever it hits (and it will _hit). Then there is the new ninja, _Fallen Shinobi, which is a slightly expensive card, but we mash every ninja into this deck. Other tweaks are removing some tap lands, as they are really slow, and replacing them with basic lands. A dual colored deck doesn't need that much mana fixing and we already have some mana rocks and/or accelerators (listed above in the description). On that note, we are running fewer lands than recommended due to having several cards that help us get land (Burnished Hart, Ancient Excavation) and hopefully enough card draw to get some lands.

This decklist will continue to be tweaked in the future. Remember we're trying to be be a budget build.
