Sideboard


Dictate your opponent's moves and then beat face with some of the fastest acceleration in Modern.

Unlike our G/R counterpart, assembling an early Tron is necessarily part of our game plan. We look to control the early turns with removal and counter magic, and then set off the Mindslaver lock or drop a bomb once we have copious amounts of mana. I have attempted to create a universal UTron resource, complete with my own list and choices, as well as other user's UTron lists and other resources.

Match History and Sideboarding

Accordion titles include match record, accordion content includes description of the match and game records.

  • Match-up summary: Largely in our favor due to the large lifelink creatures. Landing an Ugin almost forces a concession. Our counter magic should be able to match their spells until we assemble Tron and drop threats.
  • Sideboarding: Mana rocks can probably come out and be replaced by Echoing Truths. Replace a spell that you didn't think you'd need game 1 with AEtherize.
  • My match history:
    1. BW Tokens (feat. Westvale Abbey  ) (2-0): Ugin won Game 1, and TKS / Wurmcoil Pressure won Game 2. Unfortunately two rather uneventful games.
  • Match-up summary: Winnable only if we are able to stop their creatures before they can get through, or if we can land a very early Platinum Angel and protector her.
  • Sideboarding: Instant-speed removal is very good here, so Dismember and Spatial Contortion can come in. Flashfreeze can be useful, as can Echoing Truth, depending on what you see in Game 1.
  • My match history:
    1. Mono-Green Infect (2-0): Landing a Platinum Angel early with Spatial Contortion s to remove their creatures won both games. This match was played with the Thopter-Sword variant, but I didn't seen any Thopter-Sword pieces in either game.
  • Match-up summary: This can get very hard with their hand disruption, but they also have few options if we land an Ugin or initiate the Mindslaver lock with counter spells to protect against Kolaghan's Command.
  • Sideboarding: There isn't much to sideboard- if you see lots of tokens, Echoing Truth could be good in place of the mana rocks. Possibly a Monastery Siege to slow down their hand disruption, although that will have done its damage before you land it.
  • My match history:
    1. Mardu Control (2-1): Three Inquisition of Kozileks and a Thoughtseize reaked havoc on my hand Game 1. I was able to assemble Tron is games 2 and 3, slamming Ugin immediately after which led to a concession.
  • Match-up summary: Our weakest matches are against aggressive decks, and this one is no different. They even mainboard Spreading Seas which can disrupt assembling Tron. Very hard to win through their unblockable creatures.
  • Sideboarding: Mana rocks can probably come out and be replaced by Echoing Truths and an AEtherize. Can also replace a counter spell and a Treasure Mage with two Spatial Contortion s.
  • My match history:
    1. Uw Merfolk (1-2): Overwhelmed Games 1 and 3, and Platinum Angel won Game 2.
  • Match-up summary: Big brother here has the advantage. Their acceleration is much faster than ours, making our counterspells more useless as the game goes on. Ugin doesn't do much, and their creatures are hard to beat. As in Karn.
  • Sideboarding: Spatial Contortion and Mana Leak aren't too good here. Echoing Truth and Hurkyl's Recall could be of some use, but nothing that is great here.
  • My match history:
    1. GR Tron (1-2): Games 1 and 3 were just seeing who could get more mana the fastest. Game 2 was won by denying her Tron with Ghost Quarter and Tectonoc Edge (I had not removed GQ yet). Karn with O-Stones hurt.
  • Match-up summary: Like most mirrors, the games come down to skill. Play to what your opponent is trying to do- you know what you want, and there's a good chance they want the same. Deny them that.
  • Sideboarding: Ugin, the Spirit Dragon and Spatial Contortion s aren't very useful. They can be replaced with Hurkyl's Recalls and an Echoing Truth.
  • My match history:
    1. U-Tron (2-0): Both games came down to who could get the Mindslaver lock the fastest. Thought-Knot Seer was very helpful, as was denying my opponent Tron with land destruction.
  • Match-up summary: Control matchups can go either way. It often comes down to who can get ahead in mana and resources. If we're able to assemble Tron in good time, then we should have that advantage, though Ancestral Vision can give them a massive boost.
  • Sideboarding: Our sideboard isn't very tuned for control decks- but Relic of Progenitus can replace the two Talisman of Dominance. If the smaller creatures aren't a problem, Spatial Contortion can be replaced by Monastery Siege to either give card advantage or inhibit their Bolts (if they splash red for them).
  • My match history:
    1. UW(r) Control (2-1): All three games went to whoever could generate enough mana and resources quick enough. Game 1 I lost to Bolts and recurred Bolts. Games 2 and 3 were won by Ugin and Wurmcoil Engines, respectively.
    2. UW(r) Control (2-1): Games one and two were won from resolving a Sundering Titan hitting at least three of their lands. Game two was lost to a Nahiri, the Harbinger into Emrakul, the Aeons Torn.
    3. UW(r) Control (2-0): Both games were won by fighting over resolving Ugin, a fight which I won. Didn't see the Nahiri + Emrakul mess hit the field.

  • Removed Platinum Angel for Ugin, the Spirit Dragon - With playtesting, Ugin wins me the game when he hits against most decks. I still need to test more, but I think he's here for the long run.
